Benjani Transfer Saga - What Really Happened?

'Alright lads, all the chauffeurs have cried off sick...so who's gonna drive Benji up to Manchester?'

Silence.....until eventually a spotty trainee at the back pipes up...

'I will boss!'

'And what do you drive son?'

'Robin Reliant boss'.

'Perfect son, perfect.... got GPS?'

'No boss'

'Great! I mean.... hold on, take this one.... let me just reconfigure it for a few minutes......... there, that should do the trick son... remember to stick rigidly to what the GPS tells you, keep it under the speed limit, and try and limit it to the two six packs on the drive up there.... don't want our friends in blue holding you up on the way....'

'Anythin' else boss?'

'Yes son, make sure you stop off at every service station along the way, I know you haven't got a mobile so I'll need you to phone in regularly for further instructions.'

'Oh and one more thing.... if you somehow get there before 11, you'll be out on loan to the scummers on Monday!'

NB: This article is meant in good humour and in no way suggests that 'Arry condones drink driving which is obviously wrong!

Nice article - I can't stop smiling about this - we get both! Woohoo! I think Benji will be fine coming back, I'm sure the fans will sing for him and make him feel wanted.

Yep, was a right old bonus to wake up to the news....just reeks of a conspiracy!

Great, Tantona, and the funniest bit is that you can imagine it actually happening. There has to be a Harry scam in this farce somewhere - it will become the stuff of legends, stories told to young supporters of portsmouth, embelished and improved as time passes untill the actuallity of it is lost in the mists of time . . . . as long as the real truth remains hidden of course!

A bit like the Amdy Faye story where Redders set the dogs to keep him from leaving the house before he signed for Pompey. Ah, Redknapp and Portsmouth are made for each other.

Sorry to Cut n Past this but it's important: The Premier League are to examine the paperwork over the proposed transfer of Portsmouth's Benjani Mwaruwari to Manchester City. It had been thought the deal was off after City failed to complete the signing of the Zimbabwe striker on transfer deadline day. City stated that due to the player's late arrival into Manchester on Thursday they did not have enough time to seal the deal. Pompey boss Harry Redknapp was confident of the deal going through following their capture of Spurs' Jermain Defoe. Despite initially appearing as though Benjani would be staying at Fratton Park, it now seems the Premier League could yet allow the deal.

When we have all stopped celebrating, the reality will sink in. Either conspiracy or total incompetence exists. The former is not good for football club owners or players and the second is not good for "HR". We have now had eight strikers on our books in the last 12 months and "HR" cannot realise that it is a playmaker that is needed.

Doh....you're right Et_tu, it is sounding likely that it'll be allowed to go through after all :( for a cheeky 8.7 million....

If they allow this to go through now, they might as well scrap the deadline altogether - everyone will be ignoring it. How about saying to the ref - I would have scored if I'd got to the ball on time,so you should allow the goal? Rules are rules, and deadlines are deadlines. But then who knows what the FA will do.

well i think benjani should stay if we didnt have a replacemtn( defoe) but looks like he will still be going depending on what the fa come up with god knows what that will be but further evaluation i have decided this is a great deal we have defoe who is younger a more prolific striker and someone who harry will be able to harness to great potential he has prven pedigree and at least we have consolation that he is proven not some player we have never heard about

i think 8.8-9 mill for benjani is a great bit of business given he is 30 and not a goal scorer constantly

I would be really sad to see benji go since he has scored the majority of our goals, and he can really score from anywhere but like pompey boy said he is turning 30 this year, and he is having a breakout season so this is our chance to make a profit on him, so I can understan why they would sell him, although I would prefer to see him go in the summer so he can help us get that uefa cup spot

Surely he wont feature tomorrow whatever happens? If he does, it's like some kind of roy of the rovers type thing, He gets one last game for us, bangs in a hatrick and watches the last 10 mins with us all in the Fratton End!

if he goes, it would be better like that! imagine, a hattrick against chelsea. then we would be gutted that hes gone!

That'd be fantastic wouldn't it? Give us all a chance to give him the proper send-off that he surely deserves! If the muddle isn't sorted one way or the other by the Premier League, then surely there's no precedent or rule in place that could stop him playing?

ok, so what DID happen? rumours suggest he was in manchester all the time, and just turned up 2 and a quater hours late for a medical...(you can just imagine it, "ooops, sorry, i thought you meant meet me at old trafford!"), or maybe he missed his flight north, the next one was cancelled, and the following one delayed? or maybe, his agent was doing some dodgy deals? or possibly even man city pulled out? my one BIG concern is that it is POMPEY pushing for the deal, not man city.

carpet, Pompey have to push for the deal cos they need the money to finance the defoe deal that has been done, I bet Sascha is sweating!

personally i would be happy to pay an extra pound a day to keep benji. london papers are saying city got cold feet, but it is rather odd that he managed to miss two flightss from 2 different airports.... very strange

Harry would never do that would he, its a bit like his secret mission to the scum, I hope that Benjy gets a goal tomorrow and then the deal falls through and he HAS to stay. If the club wanted us to all chip in for Defoe i am sure we all would wouldnt we.

If we have all the money Sasha says we have then why the drama about paying for Defoe. Can't money be taken fromanother account and then balanced again from summer transfers. Are we down to less than 9 million in the kitty. Will we have a very small stadium as we have no money.

01/02/2008 22:15:00

yep, only 450 for every person who goes to our next match...not much really! (assuming he cost 9 million, and we get 20 000 attendance). Maybe man city got cold feet after benji told them he reallt didnt want to leave?

01/02/2008 23:10:00

Carpet, dont expect the 4000 Chelsea fans that come down will want to pay 450 to keep Benji at pompey.

ive tried to think 'yep sacha has cash' but tbh it is things like this that 'dont really fill you with confidence'... granted he cannot be a bottomless pit of cash, and 'the books need balancing' but if he has money why could we not have just signed defoe and kept benji no questions asked - why sell one to finace the other, when clearly they could be a dynamite pairing...

My thoughts exactly Rug. There was an article I read today (I' not sure inwhich paper as I have read so many this week) that said Sasha had taken a refinance loan against Pompey of 24 million in the past few weeks to keep things afloat. I have not been able to confirm or dispell this so I am just restating what the report said.

Got to agree with you Rug, they could be "dynamite" Kanu is a great super sub and i'm not too sure on Baros at the moment, he looks unfit to me. Whatever, if Benji stays i for one will be singing his name to the rafters, pity anybody standing next to me though..
