Pompey's best 11 - StuartM

Here is my favourite all-time Pompey 11: not necessarily the best players ever, but those who gave their all for Pompey and have stood out for me over the years.

Goalkeeper: David James - I have said "Great save by David James" dozens of times since he came - truly legendary ability to pull off amazing saves.

Right Back: Glen Johnson - The best attacking fullback I have seen at Portsmouth - can dribble past players with ease, crosses well and can score great goals - and will probably become more of a legend over the next few years when he learns to give his all a bit more!

Centre Back: Noel Blake - this guy was just awesome in defence, scored lots of goals and when we needed him, he would play up front in the last 10 minutes and sometimes score - a true legend from my youth.

Centre Back: Linvoy Primus - Has such a great attitude, always given 110% and outshone our big name defenders last year and in previous years. A must.

Left Wing Back: Matty Taylor - Has scored some legendary goals and penalties for Portsmouth, always runs hard and I'll forever remember his celebration against Wigan!

Right Midfield: Steve Stone - Another one who was instrumental in getting us out of the Championship and keeping us the Premiership - scored some crucial goals, supplied great crosses, never gave up and inspired others.

Centre Midfield: Micky Tait - A great hard tackling hardnosed player who could score some great goals - played a number of great seasons for Pompey in the 80's

Centre Midfield: Pedro Mendes - Wins his place in the team for scoring THE best goal I've seen for Pompey - against City in the Great Escape - as well as the other blasts he has scored - good intelligent footballer who has tons of class.

Left Midfield: Paul Merson - What a creative inspiration for our promotion season - he set up and scored so many goals and made such a difference to our team - always will be remembered for lifting us up out of mediocrity. Harry Redknapp's best ever buy!

Striker: Guy Whittingham - I saw his first ever goal for Pompey and followed his career ever since, always telling my friends that this guy would be legendary - he proved it with his 48 goals in a season which will probably never be surpassed.

Striker: Benjani Mwaruwari - I reckon Benjani would set up as many goals for Guy as Paul Walsh did, his non stop running and hassling and competitiveness, as well as his excellent attitude make him a big favourite for me.

Good selection mate, quite an attack minded side, probably winning games 7-4 etc, although i dont think that will ever happen at Fratton!!

Like the look of that team, we must be roughly the same age looking at the players you pick, wonder what a back line Blakey and Linvoy would make?
pompey4me
Great choice Stuart. You must be a lot younger than me (who isn't) I can hear but there is no definitive selection and I like yours. Yosser Tait, Blakey the favs from the 80s and only Whittingham from the 90's when we were not wonderful were we? and on 4me's point Linvoy and Blakey would take no prisoners would they? Top notch.

I think Blake would do as well as Joleon Lescott's doing at Everton ! And we'd score more goals from corners with this team !
StuartM
Good choice, Stuart. Saw them all. Brings back some good memories with players like Blake & Tait. Hard as nails the pair of them.
storagematt
nice players in there - most of which i agree wit, but some i just dont know enough about...

Where's Micky K?
paultsmouth
its a quality line-up mate - quite a few will be in my team, still havent sorted it yet tho, keep thinking yep he's in, but how can i leave him out...
pompeyrug
I think Micky K would be brought in for a specialist role in games where Barton and Thatcher were in the opposition
plymouth graham
some of my favourites were David Kemp, Alan Rogers, Norman Piper and Terry Brisley who were not really top notch in their own eras let alone today. But i do reckon with the right service a young Kempy would give any one a run up front -eastney dave will probably be the only one old enough to comment on this

Graham.... Cheers mate.. in some respects i wish i wasn't old enough to remember David Kemp.. or Alan Rogers and Terry Brisley... OR Norman Piper.. but I do, all of them.... I like Rug am struggling to do my team but Kempy is going be hard to leave out.... Stuart.. great line up fella and although the others have said it can you imagine being a striker and going up against Blakey and Linvoy... most would brick it I reckon...

Didn't Noel Blake score 6 goals one season (3 at each end) ?

Nice XI Stuart; you and I have a lot of similar memories cos there's a few in your team that are in mine as well.

Hey who's going on about my age? All great players and yes Dave Kemp could make it today - very quick over short distance and a natural instinct for goal. Norman Piper was tipped in the early 70's as a future England player by the national press. The Sun ran a story after some failure or other showing two or three national teams that had been ignored by management. Piper was included. Alan Rogers was a typical winger could not score goals and a little lightweight but was he great to watch on his day. We all remember Liverpool 1980 when he gave Phil Neal a real roasting. Brisley came here late in his career but played a key role in starting the climb from Div 4.
