Pompey's best 11 - 007

Pompey's best 11 - 007
The problem with us oldies is playing formations and combining the old with the new. I am like Chix and favour two wide men. So therefore, Peter Harris and Jackie Henderson, possibly Pompey's fastest in living memory would be on the flanks.

Jimmy Dickinson and Len Phillips cover the defensive and creative midfield respectively. Derek Dougan and Jack Froggatt would play anywhere. Norman Uprichard in goal if sober. Ray Crawford to lead the attack. Distin central defence, depending where Froggatt played. Jackie Mansell at left back if fit. I have a dilemma at right back, but Primus and Johnson should be considered.

Finally one must assume that all selections relate to the players peak playing period during their Pompey career.

GK - Norman Uprichard - If sober.
RB - Linvoy Primus or Glen Johnson
CD - Sylvain Distin
CD - Jack Froggatt - or left side attack.
LB - Jackie Mansell. If fully fit. (Not often)
MF - Len Phillips - seeing is believing.
MF - Derek Dougan - or any position.
MF - Jimmy Dickinson-non finer.
RW - Peter Harris
CF - Ray Crawford-Before injury.
LW - Jackie Henderson.

I have only seen3 of the above in the flesh, so hard to judge, I am historically aware of the others though, Jim Dick and Peter Harris must be right up there

I'm sure they are a great bunch of lads but those of us, young 40ish, who started going in the 70s, sadly can't appreciate how good these chaps were for us.

a fine selection, like the fellas above i can only claim to have read about most of these, or seen limited footage - but some cannot be argued against can they... to see glen johnson being mentioned already shows the impact he is having - i think he will probably be my right back too tbh.

007 some great names and a few out of position - Dougan in midfield - but that it the right idea. Mix the new with the old and good to see Len Phillips he has family in Eastney.

I believe Eastneydave when Dougan first came to Pompey from Distilery he played as a playmaker. I well remember watching Pompey play Wolves at Fratton Park with a crowd of about 40.000 when Dougan made such a fool of the famous Billy Wright that the crowd were convulsed in laughter. He was a very young man then. Later in his career he played at both center half and forward. I hope my memory is not at falt, thank you for your comments.

P.S. Jack Froggatt played for England as a left winger and centerhalf long before the all round footballer became the fashion.

Sadly the Doog only played 33 times fpr Pompey before moving to Blackburn and that was just before my time although did see him play in his later days for Wolves and Leicester. Great character who would have been 70 next week (20th).

Wow .. what a team 007 we could talk for hours about a lot of these players not that I have seen them all play but I know an awful lot about most of them. Uprichard in goal is an inspired choice (I wonder how many would just go with James or Knight). Jack Froggatt must be a cert in any team and although I personally wouldn't go for Dougan or Crawford their inclusion is worthy. Jimmy Dicko (who could leave him out) and as for Henderson and Harris well nuff said. Len Philips to is a legend to me (I went out with his daughter before I was married) and played against his son 'young' Lenny when he was old on a number of occassions.. Some notable ommissions Scoular, Reid, Pointer, Gordon, Hains.. the list is endless ... but you never know who might crop up in mine... when I can be decisive enough to make a selection and stick to it ..

Chix, Len Phillips worked with my father at De Havillands after he was crocked on England duty. I believe Pompey were paid 15.000 for losing this great player. What price today? Another player who moved position from inside left to right half. In this position to see him floating balls to Peter Harris to run onto, inside the full back was inspirational. A legend indeed, I hope his daughter was up to scratch!!

Vital View - League 2, 18th February 2017

Doncaster's winless run went on but they remain three points ahead of Plymouth. Carlisle are a further two points back. Leyton Orient and Newport hold the unwanted relegation places.

Video - Barnet 1-1 Pompey

A late Barnet goal looked as though it would end Pompey's unbeaten run but Conor Chaplin proved the saviour when he scored a last minute equaliser to earn a point in a 1-1 draw.
