Keepers Watch Out - Pompey Are About

Pedro Mendes has always been the main culprit, with Pompey fans screaming "shoot" at the top of their voices at any given opportunity. He more often than not obliges to astounding effect. His three firecrackers against Manchester City, plus two great finishes against Reading and West Ham in previous years have defences worried every time he gets the ball from a corner.

Aside from Pedro, recent seasons have also brought great long range finishing for Matty Taylor. His unbelievable strikes against Sunderland and Everton will live long in the memory, and his low shot against Newcastle wasn't bad either.

This season has seen the emergence of several fantastic goals from distance from Pompey players, none more so than Niko Kranjcar. The free kick against Birmingham was something special and the Fulham goal last year was an amazing way to score your first for your new club.

Noe Pamarot smacked one in against Newcastle, and has been trying to repeat the feat ever since. Glen Johnson has had several shots from distance trouble many a keeper, and Benjani has also shown that he isn't a 'Quashie' with great goals against Reading and Newcastle.

Sean Davis has always tried his luck from any angle, and he thought he'd got his first goal in over a year only for the dubious goals panel to rule his effort against Reading as an own goal. Throw Dave Nugent's belter that struck the post into the equation, and Pompey have a pretty formidable firepower in their squad.

With Sulley Ali Muntari recently coming good in the best way possible with two of the best strikes I've seen in a long time, the inevitable cheers will soon be gracing our terraces for many games to come.

I have a feeling that I'll be continuously chanting "shoot" for the foreseeable future...

crackin' read mate, really enjoyed reading this so i am delighted that you again submitted this for us to share! lets hope we can keep shouting 'shoot' and keep getting the result we want...

Leave those shooting boots at home when Spurs come to visit and you are strictly prohibited from hitting anything from 30 yards in the vague direction of Robinson if the scores are locked and in injury time. Will never forget Pedro's punt from the half way line against Man Utd that was disallowed.

It's funny, I don't even think about Mendes at the moment for long range shots what with Matty, Muntari and Krunchie up to it. I've seen Utaka bang in a few long rangers too.

TergeHauge... 'If scores are locked and in injury time ' You having a laugh, you're playing Pompey remember ... not Derby or Boro... ;) Has Defoe sold his house yet as I hear theres a nice little pad at Gunwarf he might be interested in ??

......Back to the point ...great article jbaker and you are soo right most anybody can score from distance these days... It won't be long before we are shouting shoot to Jamo !!

a great read, brings back some good memories and reminds me of just one of the reasons why I love this club so much
whitestones
Chix, remember who sold you Pedro Mendes, Noe Paramout and Sean Davis and kept you out of the Championship.

& who were happy to take 7.5m for three reserve team players.

i'll be shouting 'shoot' at every given moment against spurs this weekend - i think we might see another long ranger from someone...
pompeyrug
Even though shouting shooot is a bit of a laugh, surely it puts the players off just a little bit? What if they were about to put through a defence splitting pass, hear the cries, and blast a Quashie over the bar? Enough of me being a Killjoy anyways, it's great to see so many talented players hitting them from all over the shop....Tottenhams' defence are shaky at best, so expect a few goals come Saturday...

if we cannot score a few goals against a very dodgy spurs defence i will be very surprised... if birmingham can score 3 at white hart lane and beat them, even tho we are struggling to score at home we should be able to do the same without conceding the 2 that brum did too...
pompeyrug
if our players get used to us shouting shoot, then they can still play the through balls, whilst defences brace themselves for a long range shot and forget about our strikers who recieve the easiest of long balls and cooly slot home. shoot or pass its all good for pompey!
