Knowing me knowing you - steaming

Knowing me knowing you - steaming
1 - Vital Pompey username?
Steaming.

2 - Where do you come from/where do you currently live?
Born in Jersey and live in Jersey!

3 - How long have you been a Vital Pompey member?
Probably about two years.

4 - What do you think of Vital Pompey? Be brutally honest!
Really the best "Pompey" site around. Good contributors, sound discussion and always fresh.

5 - How did you find out about Vital Pompey?
Via the Newsnow site.

6 - When did you first watch Pompey live - not on box unless this is the only way you have been able to see them? Not necessarily at Fortress Fratton though.
It was the mid to late fifties when the lads came to Jersey for a friendly. The most memorable part of that tour for me was meeting Jimmy Dickinson and the lads when they visited our school. I suppose I was about 12 at the time. The first time I went to a league game was many years later. Can't remember exactly when. But we were in the fourth division and beat Darlington 2 - 1 after being one down at half time.

7 - How often do you get to watch Pompey?
I try to get over once a year at least. Made it this year for the Reading game - how lucky can you get!!! Hope to be back for the Chelsea game, if not before. And every time they are on SKY.

8 - Who is your favourite Pompey Player - current and/or former?
Difficult!! You just can't help liking Benjani. Wish he wouldn't take penalties, though! But the silky skills of Niko are admirable. The solid and professional Distin and Campbell are such a key to our current success. Love 'em all really!! Former players - other than Arthur Conan Doyle (I never saw him play!), it has to be Gentleman Jim. The one and only.

9 - What is you favourite Pompey moment?
Two seasons ago a group of us from the Jersey Supporters Club went to the Man City game - expecting it to be out last visit for a Premiership game to some years. That 93rd minute strike from Pedro is something I (and many others) will never forget. That was the start of the great escape and the rest is history. I am proud to say "I WAS THERE!!!!!!"

10 - What are your realistic hopes for Pompey in the future?
Premiership success is built, these days, on huge amounts of money, good management and a hint of good fortune. As things stand at the moment we have all that. If Sacha stays and continues to invest, nothing is beyond us. I agree with what Harry is saying - a top ten would be good. But anything less would be disappointing. Europe must be the target, but that is the target for, what, a dozen clubs - but why not us? Champions League - could be done within 2 years. It won't be the same top four forever!!! Realistic, I don't know. Isn't the game really about the dream?!?!?!

Nice you meet you steaming. Artheur Conan Doyle never played for Pompey by an amateur team in the City called Portsmouth AFC in the 1880s. There was no link between the two clubs. I will look up the Darlo game for you later and give you the date.

Thanks Eastneydave. Just shows you can't believe everything you read! http://www.visitportsmouth.co.uk/history/119.htm And as to the Darlo game, it may have been Division 3. Different world now!

Always here - just rather quiet!!!! But now we do have something to shout about. Maybe I'll raise my ambitions and believe we can make a top 4 finish - or better - this season even!! The Villa game might well prove to be the defining moment and lead us to home wins over Arsenal and Chelski. If that happens then the dream could well become reality!!

Right the Darlo game may not have been Darlington but their neighbours Hartlepool. Our two home games against Darlo in Division 4 were both won 3-0 and 4-3. We were a goal down but along came the Phil Ashworth show and it was 2-2 at half-time. Colin Garwood scored a last minute penalty winner. However having checked the records the only game we won 2-1 at home during the dark days was against the Pool when Garwood and 'far post' Brisley truned it round in November 1979. What do you think?

i had less belief that we could win at villa park than i did anfield, always felt that we could do there and win, but had doubts about beating villa - now we have done that i would love to make it 7 in a row against liverpool, beat spurs and arsenal too and were literally flying... either way its been an incredible start to the season!

Good to meet you 'steaming' I too had the pleasure of meeting Gentleman Jim but was soo young that I didn't fully appreciate who or what he was (11 at the time when he was, I think, manager). I had no idea (why would I) that you were in Jersey ... so tht's another location we can add to the list... this site really is spread far and wide isn't it ... We've even got eastneydave in Pompey ;)
