Pompey competitive England caps

The only Pompey player to achieve that honour was the late Jimmy Dickinson MBE. Jim played in two World Cups, 1950 and 1954 and won five caps in those tournaments.

25 June 1950 v Chile - Rio de Janeiro W2-0
29 June 1950 v USA - Belo Horizonte L0-1
17 June 1954 v Belgium - Basle D4-4
20 June 1954 v Switzerland - Berne W2-0
26 June 1954 v Uruguay (QF) - Basle L2-4

The defeat by USA in Belo Horizonte is famous for being one of the great upsets in World Cup history. The USA were total outsiders with a collection of soccer misfits but the England side was totally under prepared. Jim was one of the casualties of the shock, missing the final qualifier in Rio against Spain (which England also lost).

In the 4-4 draw with Belgium, Jim became the only Pompey player to score in an England competitive game - unfortunately it was an own goal during extra time. No penalty shoot outs in those days!!

To date, no Pompey player has represented England in a European Championship game.

The first Blues player to represent his country in the European Championships was popular Irishman Eoin Hand when he played as a substitute for the Republic against Czechoslovakia in May 1969. Eoin, who spent more than 10 years (in two spells) at the club after signing from Drumcondra went on to manage his country. Hand's reign began the revival of Irish football narrowly failing to qualify for the Europeans in 1984 and eventually being succeeded by Jack Charlton.

So Jamo or Sol can earn a place in Pompey history next Saturday against Israel in what will be first meeting between the two countries in England.

great article eastneydave - thank you for the research and writting it. sol looks like he is out of the squad again doesnt he, so it is down to jamo...
and how will today's result go down with mcclown?? Jamo clearly conceeded a pen, but was not at fault for the other 2 goals.
robinson conceded 3 yesterday tho too didnt he. tbh, altho i really think that jamo should be the no.1 i think that robinson will keep the shirt. the penalty he conceded today reminded me of the penalty he gave away for england against france at euro 2004...
jamo wont be in the england team, forreasons mentioned by tony adams...its a shame, but we will have to wait for matty and gary...oh no, just matty to pull on the england shirt for us next...or nuggent?
Our England credentials match our teams decline over the last 50 years. Very little to get excited about until now, maybe.
eastneydave, great article mate and full of your usual impecable facts (was this all from memory ?).. Maybe not Solid this time but I really think Jamo will get the nod...
Eoin Hand.. forgot about him.. A classic Pompey No6, with Big Paul Went @ 5 and Marinello @ 7. .. you have the knack of making me feel old... :)
Pompey have never been that popular with the England set-up, even our all conquering teams of 48-50 could only muster 1 player!!
yep it is a great article, completely agree. i beleive some was taken from books , but even the information in the books was occassionally wrong i believe so he had to correct that...
Chix Thanks all for the comments. Eoin Hand in fact after this debut at Fulham in 1968 (I was there think it as November) played every game for the rest of that season and the next. Settled in quickly then.
Paul there were other players who played for England from the championship team but none the World Cups - no qualifiers in those days. The European Championships did not start until 1960.
Yes I did it from books and checked on Web I was not born in 1950. Mike Neasoms Pompey History 1984 contains a number of errors, probably typos. But if you want anymore articles like this done send them through Rug and I will do my best.
......and finally because of lack of television in the early 50's it means that no Pompey fan has ever seen one of their players play competitively for England!!
unless they were at the games :) there you go fellas, dave has said it, if you want any other historical bits sorted he is you man, contact me and i will 'challenge dave'...
Does that mean I get a beach buggy to drive around in?
possibly, but you are not get the lycra suit to go with it! :)
That, I assure you, would be a relief to one and all.
you do not fancy a borat sytle lycra suit then mate let alone an anika rice one!
No sorry you can't tempt me!!
ah well, it was worth a try :)
Can just imagine the faces as you zoom past South Parade Pier in your beach buggy and Lycra suit on a Sunday morning.... followed closely of course by a camera crew and horads of screaming women....
No I can't imagine that!!
Could this be a way to raise finance for Vital! Obviously, I mean pay him not to do it!
L L Blue
Don't bother to ask me if I am prepared to go on along with this plan to rob people of their hard earned cash. Tell you what though wouldn't raise much!!
When I said abot the England set up, I meant competitively, I was aware of Jack Froggatt, Len Phillips and Peter Harris, any more?
You are right Paul those are the only ones although Reg Flewin did play once for England during the war against Wales. On only one occasion during the championship years did more than one Pompey player appear in the England when Jimmy Dick and Peter Harris played aginst Eire at Goodison Park. England lost 2-0 the first time they were beaten at home by a foreigh side.
Other than the four mentioned above the next player to win an England cap was Mark Hateley!! Yes 2 championships and only 6 England Internationals since the war. No wonder players wont come here!!
And know a year later we have three starters (Defoe, James and Johnson) with Crouch back in the fold soon no doubt. How things progress.
October 2008 - four players in the England squad!! Things get are getting ridiculous.
