'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Formation, Formation, Formation

I asked in an a Vital Pompey opinion poll "Which Formation do you Prefer?" The results are as follows:

Guy and Stuart's 4-4-2 81%
Appleton's 4-4-1-1 13%
Cotterill's 4-5-1 come 4-4-3 6%

Appy's 4-4-1-1 had a modest amount of votes, Cotterill's 4-5-1 wasn't a popular choice and Guy and Stuart's 4-4-2 was clear favourite. However after this poll Appy has changed formation with the introduction of Marko Futacs. Whatever you call this new formation of his it looks like a 4-4-2 with freedom for Erik and a lot more support for Kitson as a striker but at the same time a hint of freedom for Kitson to fall back when needed.

This is how I see it, you may disagree.

In the last 2 games this has been used I've seen some good football, even entertaining football, as did I during much of the spell when Guy and Stuart were caretakers and played 4-4-2!

For me and the majority that voted we favour 4-4-2. Pompey's results also reflect how the team flourish in 4-4-2 when playing in that formation, ignoring Watford away, and produces A LOT more attempts on target of which we have needed of late. I also like it because we get to see the best out of Kitson when he has that support! He is not a lone striker full stop. Kitson had an amazing game against Watford at home and Futacs looks promising scoring 2 goals in 2 games!

I predict to see both Futacs and Kitson on the scoreboard a lot more if we stick to 4-4-2.

So there you have it, 4-4-2 wins! I may even pre-order that wedding dress soon Chix ;)

The problem with sticking to one formation is that when other teams get used to the way we play, they beat us. However, I believe that having a formation which can vary at different times and different circumstances makes a lot of sense. For example, a 4-4-2 can change into a 4-4-1-1 if playing away or playing a more cautious game. A 4-5-1 can turn effectively into a 4-3-3 (this reminds me of Harry's Pompey of late). So all in all, a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1 is what I see as very effective for our team. Personally I'd love to see us play a 3-5-2 formation, but that would never happen unless we are Barcelona (lol)!

i did vote for the Guy & Stuart formation, but have to say that Appy seems to have got it together quite well now, and this formation does seem to work well. There certainly doesn't seem to be any danger of other teams figuring out our unvaried formation! Is there any truth in the rumour that Monday's side were trained by Stuart & Guy because Appy had the flu? It could also be argued that the formation picked itself because Appy was short of players to choose. Whatever, a new Pompey hero has emerged - Futacs, your a star!
