How do we turn our form around?

How do we turn our form around?
Not long ago I asked in a poll 'So how do we turn our poor form around?' And the results are as followed:

New manager in ASAP 46%
The players need to wake up 27%
Add an assistant manager 19%
Results will come, give it more time 8%

As you can see almost half of you thought a new manager was the solution, just over a quarter thought the players need to wake up, about a fifth thought an assistant manager was the way forward and a small count of voters thought that results will come in time.

Firstly, thanks to all that voted it gives me some insight to the views of the users of Vital Pompey and what needs to change because something must change and very quickly too if the club wishes to carry on maintaining stability.

It is very hard to put your finger on it, but results aren't coming our way at the moment are they? One thing the majority of fans I have spoken to believe on paper we have good quality with premier league and international experience, however barring a few games (West Ham, Reading & Peterborough) the performances haven't been up to standard. But we have to remember this is a new-look team and gelling together takes time. But have we had enough time and practice to gel?

Cardiff have a new look team but have been successful very quickly, but although a different pedigree, on the other end of the spectrum Man City have taken a season or two to be at there most potent! The jury's out on this one.

Maybe motivation's the key? We all know it appears to take players 45mins to turn up at matches. It is just bad luck? West Ham and Peterborough games both deserved at least a point each for Pompey.

Then there's the whole SC debate, is the bad form solely down to the manager? Do fans around the country act too quickly to point and blame one man? Whatever the reasons we must turn things around and with some winnable home fixtures coming up this should be the time to start climbing the table and easing the worry and panic of fans! (Especially moaning nags like me lol)

One thing is for sure let's try and stay positive, back the team, and turn Fratton Park back into a fortress! That's our part! And that's what us fans are famous for! Loyalty, Faith and Pride!

I missed this vote but I would have gone with 1) play the formation the team clearly understands 4,4,2 - at least in the short term. 2) players justify their salary and take responsibility for the actions including stopping the poor discipline issues; especially back chatting the Ref. 3) insist Potty Cottey has an assistant manager; make it someone with an opinion. If Steve C says all the above can't happen, his right as he is the manager but he doesn't get it turned around by - say first week of November change the manager.

Good points made RussellM I totally agree an efficient formation needs to be found as the current 4-5-1 come 4-3-3 or whatever SC names it doesn't work.

I agree pretty much with Russell but would add play the right players in the right positions - Halford is a full back and TBH is a centre back (im not sure if Moks is a centre back but he isnt a full back or defencive midfielder) - also pick your best players, Kitson should score plenty in this league if he plays up front with a partner (im not his biggest admirer but he is by record our best chance for goals, his injuries/absence has been a concern) and for heavens sake bring back Rocha and possibly Hermann - sometimes I think these players are not picked as they are more popular than the boss.

Kitson would be poor with a partner or not, just watch him play - no enthusiasm, no confidence, no creativity, no positional skills, no decent strike on him... I'm sorry Kitson is not the right player! For me put Williams LW and put Varney & Eric up front! There are our youngest, pacey and hungriest strikers by far! Kitson had 'one' good season now he's past his prime and doesn't look bothered!

Play 4-4-2 for the full 90 minutes, and ensure the players understand that playing well in the first half is just as important as in the second.

I don't think Cotterill can turn it around, football is a simple game you play your best players in their proper positions, in a system they are comfortable with, Cotterill just wants to fit square pegs in rounds holes, with a system he's comfortable with but no one else is! he won't change, he thinks he's right and everyone else is wrong, its only a matter of time before he has to go.

We're playing 4-5-1 at home, thats crazy. The disciplinary record is terrible, and the regular poor first half is just not good enough. And at the end of the day, football is a results business and we've only had 2 wins, iwith quarter of the season gone. We have started to drop alarmlingly down the table. And this is a team with some good players in it - we just forget that because we're not seeing it. Yes the team needs time to gel, but not forever, we have to sort the season out before its too late. And no more stupid excuses about the players being 'tired'. Agree that Kitson is awful, I cheered when I heard he was going to be out for a few games. But Kitson isn't the reason for our poor season. Often its when clubs change the manager that their fortunes change dramatically one way or the other, and this has to be the solution. We have to do something and soon!

I think we just need to get the ball down on the turf and play, we have a couple of good close control players, trouble is we play cloud football all the time!

Simple!...Let him go, get someone in who understands Fratton has a rich history and is a fortress...Or at least should be!!

I still don't think 4-4-2 is the answer, although to continue to play 4-5-1 and get dominated in the midfield isn't working out too well at the moment.

No Crawley return for Tubbs

Tubbs doesn't have a future at Pompey, he's on the transfer-list but offloading him could be difficult given his wages. These wouldn't be anywhere within Crawley's reach.

Pitfalls of Sheffield Wednesday loanee returning

As Catlin put it 'the gamble' of aiming sign Sheffield Wednesday loanee Lavery has to be one Pompey fans understand. It isn't as cut and dried as saying 'he's a free agent' sign him!

Lassie coming home...well sort of!

A-box-to-box player, capable of defensive duties, with ability to burst forward with intent to make things happen - Diarra is Pompey's man and wants an England return. I jest of course!

Will pair stay at Fratton?

It's been made (more than once) clear by Catlin Pompey want Davies & Hollands to stay. Both (also more than once) have said they want to this - deals have to be right for all concerned.
