Pompey turn to Shotton

Pompey turn to Shotton
Portsmouth are reported to have agreed yet another loan deal with Stoke City, this time for highly rated 21-year old defender Ryan Shotton to bolster their threadbare squad.

The youngster has had successful loan spells at lower league clubs including Altrincham and Tranmere, and is set to join Steve Cotterill's side on a season-long loan which would see him stake his claim for a place in the Potters' first team.

Pompey have already got two players on loan from the Premier League side, with defenders Ibrahima Sonko and Carl Dickinson also signing one-year loan agreements. It's thought that the club are also in negotiations with the Football League regarding a loan move for City striker Dave Kitson, with an outcome expected at the board meeting on September 9.

With the club only allowed to sign two loan players over the age of 23 (with both before mentioned players being over said age bracket) from one club, it seems Pompey's luck could be out in the race for Kitson - unless an emergency agreement can be reached with the league's governing body.

The club could also profit from the 25-squad player rule imposed on the Premier League, with a whole host of players not being picked to play for their respective sides (including Craig Bellamy, who controversially joined his hometown Cardiff City earlier this week). Cotterill also has full use of free transfers to his disposal, with the likes of Benjani Mwaruwari, Darius Vassell and Bas Savage all waiting for a move to their next club.

Benjani, of course, is reported to owe money back to Portsmouth following a loan agreed by former CEO Peter Storrie, so a move to help both parties could be reached to bring the Zimbabwean international back to Fratton Park, and to the fans' who still hold him in high regard.

Maybe no one decent wants to come to us Hussler. We are the scourge of football at the moment......... Once we get an owner proper and we have a clear picture of where we are going, perhaps we will attract some better players, but for the time being, I suppose we take what we can get.

Hussler, have you ever seen Shotton play? I suspect you haven't. He spent last season on loan at Barnsley and they will be delighted to have him back if you don't want him. Many of their fans thought he was their player of the season. But if he isn't good enough for you he will have his pick of several Championship sides I should think. You should also consider Ben Marshall on loan from Stoke. He scored seven goals from the wing on loan last season - not bad for an 18 year old. Or is he just another numpty from Stoke?

Lakeland im just making a point that we need to take skillfull attacking players onloan because we wont be able to sign them for free.... their are defenders who could do a job in the championship who a free transfers... would preffer to sign them and then use the loan spots for some attacking fliar players who will get us goals and make goals...

its gonna sound bad but i think stoke play the worst football in the premiership, given the choice borrowing their players is not something i would be looking into. i know we need anyone in but this 24 man squad thing, there has got to be some good loans coming up, off football teams. We need some attackers and creative players, altho perhaps the manager is gonna change tactics, set plays and long balls, its been successful for stoke. And this Kitson thing is most baffling, out of the whole leagues ild say that he was as close to nugent in style of play than any other player. we need variety not like for like

I don't think anyone meant any disrespect to Stoke... they've stuck it out now where we have dropped out - we ALL want to be where Stoke are now loaning out our kids to championship sides. However, given we want to be surviving in this league you can't blame a Pompey fan from wanting kids from Man U, Tottenham, chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, etc etc.

Gandor - I thought the same way about why play for Pompey right now BUT... Who else in the Championship can offer a decent up and coming kids first team football game in and game out? It's not like they're risking their careers - no ownership chaning hands, so if we go belly up then back they go. If it's hard work then they learn a valuable lesson... etc etc.

Tollitt still has a Pompey chance

Well, according to Cook. He's insisting Tollitt, the former Everton academy player who had returned to Merseyside to join Tranmere on loan, can still return to Pompey.

Pompey win and lose collectively

As such Cook doesn't want the fans to start turning on individual players, which has been the case with Bennett with Smith not exactly viewed as a 'fans' favourite' either.
