So what do we need?

So what do we need?
Steve Cotterill's first job will be to assemble a squad that is worthy of starting pre-season training in two weeks time. Yes, two weeks!!!

At the moment we have: David James, Liam O'Brien, Rocha, Mokoena, Hreidarsson, Ben Haim, Wilson, Belhadj, Ward, Sowah Mullins, Diop, Brown, Hughes, Boateng, Ritchie Utaka, Webber, Smith, Kanu. On the assumption that we will lose Mokoena, Ben Haim, Belhadj, Diop, Boateng and Utaka - and knowing that both Hreidarsson and Webber won't be available much before Christmas - that leaves us with two keepers (assuming Jamo stays (?)), four defenders (assuming Rocha stays), three midfield players (assuming that Mullins doesn't go to Swindon or somebody else) and two strikers (one of which will give you a good 30 minutes).

So, I guess we need one (maybe two) goalkeepers; probably four or five defenders (two or three lefties and two for the right side; five or six midfield players including wide players for both sides, and three strikers.

That's possibly another 15 players. Hopefully, Steve Cotterill is spending Father's Day on the phone.

hey guys. long time no speak. basically the whole situ made me dillusional about football in general. to think people in the footballing community (pundits, other managers, the fa, the premier league and of course fans) SOME would happily wave goodbye to a part of footballing heritage. i wouldnt even wish southampt... yeh that team to go into liquidation as then we'd have no rival with whom to humiliate! so ive been waiting for some good news (and more so the CVA agreement) to come out of my football-hating hibernation! so with that hefty introduction. I think dave, that, although you list the squad there I think it is sensible to say that players bought (and wages if freebies/loans) will have to be subsidised by player sales. we will have a paper thin squad HOWEVER i actually think we have a good chance of proving the whole footballing community wrong and have a successful season in the npower champs. we need another GK (young and up and coming) a DL/WL/ML and a WR/MR. A forward hard as nails brit style and more importantly a good playmaker (a la o'hara style). can we get them... i dont see why not?! i guess we need to wait a little while longer to see what steve co has to offer!

Hi Pessimist; long time no read and worse you seem to be an optimisti; Kingston life treating you well? I think Pompey need to get, a quality training ground to reduce injury; get rid of the embargo and need two additional at defense, two at midfield and two at strike. We will learn something about the managers personality in the next two weeks by who he chooses to release.

There are too many of last seasons players that we don't know the intentions of yet. Cotterill needs to get those players that we can afford to keep to commit to us before knowing where he needs to reinforce.

Solving that goalie quandary

I'm not sure our problem with finding a 'regular' no.1 last season was behind our failure to gain promotion from league two was it? Clearly it didn't help mind.

Pompey's attacking intent

Something Pompey (attacking intent) will look to show next season to get out of league two once and for all. Smith came in from Swindon last week but Cookie wants another striker.
