Derby day not important !!

Well according to ARUNA DINDANE who says he can deal with losing to Southampton - as long as Portsmouth stay up.

The Ivory Coast striker insists staying in the Prem is far more important than FA Cup bragging rights. He said: "I do not know what Pompey v Saints means as I've only been here a few months.

"I hope I can score against Southampton but the league is all that matters not. I believe it is possible for us to stay up."

Past meetings between them and League One neighbours Saints have been hit by crowd trouble. Dozens of Portsmouth fans were arrested for hurling bricks at cars after a 1-0 win in 2004. Dindane added: "It is only football and we want it to be a good derby."

This bloke is insane how can beating scum not be important. We are almost certain to be relegated so I would be willing to beat the scum any day.

What's your thought ???? Dindane right or wrong

to be fair to dindane Football_Casual he did say that he has not been in the country long so 'did not understand' how much it meant, clearly premier league football means more to him - which i guess is fair enough. that said he MUST know of rivalries like us and scum, so all he has to do is think about them?
i tell you he WILL know how much it means come saturday tho...
pompeyrug
Of course he knows of rivalries he's african! They mostly hate each other. This is a huge game whatever the circumstances of the club, perhaps given the circumstance an even bigger game. I'm sure though if we play like we can we will win, or atleast should win. Looking forward to good banter and a good game with a positive result. PUP!

i wud tell him to watch the Ghana Nigeria match or the Egypt Algeria matches..... tip of the iceberg son !!

Casual i thought excactly the same after reading it yesterday. The thing is O"Hara cant stand the bloke and his old man says some of the other players feel the same way,he turns up collecting a lot of money and doesnt give a toss in training either. He will be on more money as a premiership player than one who is in the championship so he is gonna want to stay up. Let Dindane have 15 minutes with a group of Pompey fans before the game on saturday then see what his attitude is like towards a south coast derby.

I can't see in the article where he actually says beating Southampton is not important, but I'd be inclined to agree that staying up is more important that a cup game, regardless of who we're playing. He's probably been somewhat misquoted anyway. I wouldn't worry as we're going to stuff them anyway!
pompeysloth
He can think what he likes, it's a free country

Pompeyscum: That would be understretching the purpose of discussions.

And who says O'Hara can't stand Dindane? They seem to be getting on alright in this pic... ;-) http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/02/11/article-0-0839D870000005DC-646_468x357.jpg

In that pic, he looks more like he wants to embrace Kanu instead.

The players havent chucked int the towel just yet.. and good on them.. i would lose 5-0 to scum and stay up this season

It is possible for a player to understand the rivalry, but not personally have any opinion on it. If I were to suddenly become amazing at football, and get signed by... say, west ham, I wouldn't really care too much about scorring against millwall in the FA cup, when the club is on the brink of disapearing, and relegation favourites. It's our rivalry, not his, so whilst the players that have been here a long time (over 5 years!) will know what it means, and some that have been here for some time should have an idea - I wouldn't really expect dindane to know too much. However, as rug says - by sunday, he'll know.
pompeycarpet
also, you have to say... would you say the same? would you take a loss to southampton, if it meant we stayed up? admitidly, the two arn't mutually exclusive, and it is possible that we could lose to southampton, AND get relegated (god forbid!) - which is why i'd still take a win every time... but if you see what he says, he doesn;t actually say it's not important.
pompeycarpet
I agree with Dingdong, the only issue the disastrous result against Sunderland means we are relegated; therefore we must win on Sunday! To say Dingbat knows about rivalries cos he's African completely misses the point, you have to feel it to understand it. To be honest most of Pompey people don't even know where the rivalry and terminology comes from, they even think Westwood made it up

The priorities are staying alive as a club, then staying in the prem & thirdly beating the scum. Beating the scum & then going out of business is a very sad state of mind.
storagematt
I was having a few beers with some liverpook fans last night and was explaining the history between the two, trying to explain that it's more than just the football, it's a rivalry/hatred between the cities goes back to the dock yards etc. I hope that Hughes is in the team on Saturday alongside O'Hara, I think he "gets it" and having a british core to the team could be quite important down there.
stooH
Got to agree with Matt. I have been watching the derbies right back to 1963 but this one whilst important is nowhere near as important as our survival as a club.
eastneydave
This is just what we don't want to hear from players just before derby day! Of course its important. So is the club surviving, but one doesn't influence the other. If we're going out it can't be having lost this match!
tracyc
Spot on Tracy .... There is no correlation between the two
Chix
From what I'm hearing the players are up for it and they understand the importance, including O'Hara in particular. The same goes for Avram, and Kev the Kitman is reportedly geeing them up about it too. For Dindane to have said what he did, someone must have mentioned how important the match is.
tracyc
The Scum match and the league survival cannot be compared. Beating the Scums would give us a good boost, financially and emotionally for the whole club. So, since the next game is this Scum encounter, we should go all out for this to win, and hope we can change this season from tomorrow!
