Defoe confident ahead of Belarus encounter

England head to Minsk on Wednesday hoping for a fourth successive win; giving the Three Lions their best ever start to a qualifying campaign, following wins against Andorra, Croatia and Kazakhstan.

Defoe came on as a substitute during last weekends 5-1 win over Kazakhstan to score his sixth international goal for England.

The Pompey striker told a news conference, 'The lads are confident. You can imagine after the Croatian game last month that everyone was buzzing. We want to keep it going and got another result at the weekend.

'We will be watching the videos on Belarus, so everyone in their minds will know exactly what they are good at and what they are not good at.

'No game at this level is easy. On Saturday we had to be patient - and once the first goal had gone in, we went on from there.

'We won't under-estimate them, but if we work hard and pass the ball like we can do we should get the three points.'

The match kicks-off at 19.30 on Wednesday, with the game being shown live on Setanta Sports.

Let's hope Crouchy and Defoe can sneak a few more goals.

cheers ben - thanks for this.
i would love to see defoe given a chance on wednesday, and if he is im sure he would score - if we create chances for him he will take them! he showed this on saturday, as he does for us most weeks...
i would bank on him and crouchy doing this business if given the chance, but chances are it will be rooney and heskey again - you 'need' that out and out goalscorer in a pairing tho dont you, and neither offer that, hence why defoe would be ideally suited, but would probalby play better alongside heskey but rooney wont be left out will he...

question: is there any truth to us signing this kid from heart of oak??
ausoccer
slightly off topic :-) but is that the ghanaian kid? tbh im not sure...
pompeyrug
His name is Torric Jibril, and according to ghanasoccernet last week a Heart of Oak official confirmed that we were in negotiations with the club and player - maybe by the Villa game?

If JD comes on the opposition defenders are knackered, his speed will take him into great goal scoring chances. Still would like to see JD & Crouch together for England.

Another late goal but this time for Crouchy would go down well. Not too much play though as they need the rest.

It is a shame that Heskey and Rooney will start but whilst England keep winning there is no need to change the tactics.

The Heart of Oak player if he does sign for us will go off to our Dutch club until he gets the work permits he needs. He is only 16 or 17 though is he not?

I too would like to see Crouchie & Defoe for England Storagematt. I've got an 'orrible feeling that there's not too much chance of Capello playing the two together as Harry Redknapp would be credited for any successes and I don't think Capello's too keen on the man...plus it would dent that Italian pride of his.

the problem england have, is that rooney is over rated - so much so that he "has" to start. He isnt a great goal scorer, and he doesnt creat many chances either - so I never understand whats so special about him. however rooney WILL start, and rooney/defoe won't work, so heskey/crouch will play. personally, I think crouch should... but I think heskey will...

Yeah me too Carps.. and I think Squee's point about the relationship between Harry & Fabio might have some substance too... Re Torric Jibril I've been following this quite closely and it seems he will sign efore the month is out.. and as Sneakay uggests he'll probably go straight on loan to our 'Dutch' club... who play in the Belgium league !!... Sorry Sneaks couldn't resist it !

dutch, belgian - whats the difference... 'a smoke and a pancake' aside...
good point chix, welcome to Pompey_7 - and thanks for your articles.

Given time I think the fact that Crouchy and Defoe play together week in week out, and how well they are starting to link up may prove too strong to not play them both - I would play them both with Rooney behind them. But its a good point by Squee about the relationship with Arry, and also there's the press baying for blood about leaving out someone called 'Owen' something. Welcome Pompey_7.
