'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Knowing me knowing you - frattonaussie

1 - Vital Pompey username?
Frattonaussie.

2 - Where do you come from/where do you currently live?
Born and bred in Fratton opposite St Mary's Church. I now live in Queensland, Australia on the Gold Coast (the home of that maybe team that maybe Kanu might join if it gets its license).

3 - How long have you been a Vital Pompey member?
Member about 3 months. (Written late February 2008)

4 - What do you think of Vital Pompey? Be brutally honest!
Better than the rest of the Pompey websites but do tend to be a bit too diplomatic on some issues.

5 - How did you find out about Vital Pompey?
Found by surfing the web.

6 - When did you first watch Pompey live - not on box unless this is the only way you have been able to see them? Not necessarily at Fortress Fratton though.
First saw Pompey at Fratton Park in 1953. I think the game was Pompey against Blackpool.

7 - How often do you get to watch Pompey?
I see Pompey live about once every 10 years but I see every game that is on TV here.

8 - Who is your favourite Pompey Player - current and/or former?
Current favorite player is Mendes. Past favorite Peter Harris.

9 - What is you favourite Pompey moment?
My favorite moment was when I was a kid. A winger called "Nobby" Newman stopped in the middle of a game to come over to the sideline to sign my autograph book. Nobby had just nearly crippled another player and I yelled out that the ref was blind if he thought it was a foul. Nobby heard my comment and took a breather and took the time to come over. It meant a lot to me.

10 - What are your realistic hopes for Pompey in the future?
I would like to see Pompey to be able to be constantly competitive at the top level, with good training facilities and a new stadium.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Remember Nobby Newman well, sometimes also played centre forward. Best description, raw effort comes to mind.

Pomepy v Blackpool 1953 - game was played 16 September and finished 4-4!! Your hero Peter Harris was among the scorers. Ron 'Nobby' Newman played 109 games for Pompey between 1954 and 1961 netting 21 times - he certainly was a popular member of a failing side during that period. Good stuff aussie, six years before me as I never saw the First Division days.

Nobby would have been a refs favourite these days. His motto was "if you can't get the ball then get then man". He never gave up and always had a smile and a joke for the supporters. Pity Utaka, whohas way more natural ability, doesn't have the same attitude.

good stuff FA.
the closest i think i have come to anything like you no.9 was benni mccarthy last season when we played blackburn in the league cup at fratton. he belted the ball into the crowd and rather than carry on playing he virtually came into the north stand to make sure the little girl he hit was ok...
