Does The League Matter Now?

7th in the League, and in the FA cup final. The potential to qualify for the UEFA cup on two different counts, yet still the possibility of complete failure does exist.

With 3 matches left, and 5th place in the league two places and four points away, it's a tough ask. And Harry's said it, I agree with it, and suspect many other Pompey fans do to - "All I really want now is to win the FA Cup."

Quite apart from the UEFA cup qualification issue - the FA Cup is a big deal. We haven't won it since - well we all know since when - and have spent most of our lives following Pompey, looking at that black and white picture of Jimmy Dickinson held aloft with the cup, and wondering if it would ever happen in our lifetimes. Now it might, it just might, in fact it probably will, and we are pinching ourselves. Especially those of us lucky enough to be going.

So what about the last 3 matches of the League then? Do they really matter? Of course we don't want to jeopardise our chances of the cup final. But there's always the possibility of the unthinkable happening on the day, and if that happened, and we'd given up in the League we'd finish this amazing season feeling rather shell-shocked and bereft - with nothing to show for it at all. What a letdown! And if we did manage to finish 5th, we'd be able to play for the FA Cup for the sake of the cup itself, not the UEFA cup qualification. It might even take just a little bit of pressure off, perhaps just enough to make a difference.

If we can have a good run up to the cup final, and pick up some wins, put in some good performances, then the team's confidence will be sky high. That in itself could be what we need to overcome a Cardiff team who will be playing the match of their lives. I don't know what happened to Pompey in the first half against West Brom, but it wasn't pretty. Was it unanticipated nerves? Was it a misguided belief they just needed to turn up because the opposition were from the Championship? Was it just a bad day, like we had against Man City - and a few other times this season. Whatever it was, a good run and the confidence it will bring might just be best way to make sure it doesn't happen again on the big day.

So my view is, lets give the league a go, but rest players if we need to, see if we can put in some decent performances, pick up some points and give Everton a run for their money - and see where we finish. And then it's the really important match.

tracy Nice article! Jimmy Guthrie held the cup aloft in 1939 after being presented it by the King. War broke out soon after. I agree about the last three games play as though they mean nothing and play well. Cardiff will be like West Brom a good passing side so sadly final could be similar to semi!

last three matches too me matter. although only becasue if we win them, our confidence will be high, the players will be playing well, and we (hopefully) wont have the added strain of needing to qualify for europe... loose them, and confidence will take a dive, and a game we should win with ease will crash and burn!

Thanks Dave - actually I did wonder if it was really Jimmy Dickinson when I wrote it, but then whylets facts get in the way of a good story? :-)

Great read tracy, and an interesting topic. For me, as you say, we need to get the balance right of resting key players, giving some much needed match time (utaka) but, winning so as to keep confidence high. wow, don't I just want my cake and eat it!!

Jim Dick never even got close to the FA cup, he had to "make-do" with 2 Champions medals instead!

If results don't go our away on sunday, any slim chance of 5th will vanish. Anywhere in the top 10 is a massive achievement. Yes, we want to play well, even better if we win but not at risking what realyy matters the cup. Finishing 6th & losing the cup final would leave me devestated. Yes there has to be a positive balance but will we really care about the Man City if we win the cup? Probably not. Will we have the greatest day in our footballing supporting life, if we win the cup? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

All games matter from a prestige viewpoint but we won't finish 5th so from the Europe viewpoint they are dead rubbers. The FA Cup is what matters now.

no matter how big or small a game is with pompey i want to win it - i want to win all 4 of the games we have left and i think we can and will, if that happens we'll finish 5th and win the fa cup - thank you very much, that'll do me nicely!
im desperate to finish 5th, granted not desperate enough to sacrifice the fa cup but i dont think that has to be the case, we can win all 3 league games and should try to do as much...

Great article lets make winning a habit. On another subject whats this I hear that Adams has not been offered a contract yet! The guy must take a lot of credit for our defense this year and one would think that he would be tied down so quick he wouldnt want to go anywhere else. Storrie please pull your finger out.

tracy dead rights facts are not always important are they - look at the number of copies the Sun sells every day. When I point out an error it is NOT meant to be a criticism at all far from it I always encourage as many member to write stories etc.

Paul Jimmy Dick did play in the 1949 Semi final. Was talking to Len Phillips son last night - name dropping again Dave.

both matter
Cretivo
i still believe that we will finish 5th, so it matters a great deal to me... lose today and that theory is dead in the water, lose today but play well and i will take some comfort - lose without putting up a fight, meaning we clearly dont care, and i wont...
