Pompey 1 - Chelski 1

Sat 02-02-08, 3pm

Attendance: 20488

Pompey 1-1 Chelski

We were blown away by United in the week, but we returned to home turf today hoping to retain our unbeaten home record against the 'big 4' so far this season - and we did getting a much deserved 1-1 draw.

Sylvain Distin - injury, Lauren and Benjani - transfer still up in the air all made way. In came Hermann Hreidarsson, Richard Hughes and Jermain Defoe - for his Pompey debut.

After falling behind to a Nicolas Anelka goal a debut goal from Jermain Defoe equalised to ensure that we got the point we deserved.

The Match
We started brightly, and Lassana Diarra who started the game fantastically again put in a fine ball to Milan Baros who took it first time, when he did not need to - but it was a promising start.

Chelsea then added some pressure with Michael Ballack and Joe Cole having chances that David James watched go wide.

However we were still ore than in the game and looked threatening with Niko Kranjcar showing some quick feet before getting a shot away that went wide, with Diarra trying his luck shortly after - but Petr Cech had both covered.

For over half an hour things were fairly even, but a foul by Noe Pamarot then gave Chelsea a free kick and a chance, but the wall did the job but only at the expense of a corner - from which Kranjcar headed Ballack's header off the line.

Shortly after this Baros did very well to show some fine skill and should have won Pompey a penalty with Juliano Belletti guilty of a handball, despite having a perfect view Howard Webb gave nothing... but a corner. From this corner Pamarot then struck the angle of post and bar with a header before coming out to safety.

A fantastic opportunity presented itself to us in the final 5 minutes of the half when Claude Makelele gave the ball away to Baros on the edge of his own area. A good run from the Czech striker gave him a chance but instead of taking a shot he kept going and the chance passed.

In injury time Nicolas Anelka got in behind the defence but James came out to meet him and got the save in, and Ashley Cole could only put the rebound from the far left edge of the area into the crowd.

Within minutes of the 2nd half getting underway Jermain Defoe weaved his way into the way but could not quite get a shot away as he was blocked out by their defence but the ball still fell for Baros but his shot was saved by Cech - but maybe Baros should have done better?

For a second time in the afternoon we had to clear an effort off, or away from the line when Hermann Hreidarsson, then after another call for a penalty was denied us Chelsea broke and despite the fact that at least 2 players, including the goalscorer, were offside - and the flag appeared to go up and then down - nothing was given and Anelka volleyed home Joe Cole's knockdown to give Chelsea the lead.

We got the equaliser that we deserved soon after when Baros flicked on and Defoe showed why we paid the money, calmly taking his chance to smash home a debut goal. James was again worked straight after but he was up to the task.

Midway through the 2nd half the first Pompey change was made when Sean Davis was taken off and Arnold Mvuemba came on, then Hreidarsson almost put us ahead with a header, which if on target would have surely been a goal.

End to end football saw Chelsea firstly have a chance to regain the lead, but James saved from Belletti and we then scrambled it away before Anelka could get a shot in then we broke away quickly but could not quite get a clear chance at goal.

We opened the Chelsea defence up when Mvuemba put through a fantastic pass and Defoe was away but Cech denied him a second goal, which probably he should have got, right after another fantastic ball - this time from Chelsea - from Ballack gave Shaun Wright-Phillips a great chance but he could not take it.

In the last minute Diarra again won the ball in the middle of the park and his skills eventually brought a chance for Defoe but he blazed over from the edge of the area, the 4 minutes of injury time were then signalled and in the first of these James saved from an Alex header.

Both sides were looking for the win in injury time again, and Defoe tried his luck again but could not hit the target but we still finally got a point from Chelsea.

Match Summary
I will get 'the bad' out of the way first, the ref Howard Webb was terrible today...

We were fantastic today in a superb game, with both sides looking for a win but finally we were able to get a point from Chelsea, and a point that we more than deserved.

Everyone of our players were fantastic today, and we have set standards that we have to maintain now, this is what we want to see at Fratton Park, and if we play like this against lesser sides we will no two ways about it win more often than not.

As I say we were all good but Lassana Diarra was once again 'the dogs nuts', as I was texted by russellm during the game 'we must achieve European football to keep him here next season'...

Great result and great performances all over the pitch. Couldn't pick a man of the match but Herman did very well standing in for Distin. The ref 0/10 he was appalling.
Dave, you beat me to it, Referee was the worst i've seen at fratton. Ho Makelele's (Huth-like) karate kick on Baros didnt get a yellow, or a harsh red when Davis got booked for an inoculous challenge, i'll never know. Game was brilliant today, the TEAM were awesome, Defoe and Baros produce that parnership after one training session, wait till later in the season! The crowd today was also fantastic! Great game, could easily have been 3 points, Pamarot hit bar, at LEAST one definate pen....PUP DIARRA DIARRA DIARRA
007 - I don't want to single you out but you were wrong on two accounts. Today we were the much better side. The only thing they had on us was on the break. Our defence looked stronger and in Diarra we easily had the best midfielder on the pitch. Harry the 'digrace' hardly disgracing himself with the best signing of the transfer window. Biggest gamble of the transfer window my arse.
Just like to say that it was the most offsde goal in the history of offside goals, it was right in front of me, the linesman unfortunately was on the halfway line still. By the way Alexander Armstrong was 5 rows in front of me as well
Which goal paul, theirs or ours? Who is alex armstrong?
Diarra was good today, but wasn't the best midfielder on the pitch. Sorry, Ballack was better.
Pimms o clock man.
Ballack was bollo(ks mate. Kept diving out of tackles and was easily skimmed by Diarra quite a few times.
Alexander Armstrong may be.... 1.Explorer (1818–1899), naval surgeon and explorer of the Arctic 2.Comedian (born 1970), 3.Former Attorney General of Maryland 4.Fictional military officer in the Fullmetal Alchemist anime series My guess that it was No1 !
Whizz, I dont mind being wrong, I thought our defence would be ponderous. "HR" is still a disgrace in my eyes and I am not alone, for his treatment of Benji and and others.
Raioactive, think thats fried your brain mate, ********* was just ordinary, no more, ask yourself, would we swap Diarra for Ballack? NO NO NO Back home to devon then you mad Chelsea fan you! Where were you when you were crap?
Congrats to the draw girls, guess you lot see this as somewhat of a win...sad really...
Blue is the colour
Blue is the colour, dont come on here and act the ******** fool you muppet, a draw was the least we deserved - nope, we dont see it as a win... it was a draw! i guess you see it as a 'defeat'...
and as for ballack being 'the best midfielder on the pitch', what game were you watching RadioactiveD? ballack played a fantastic ball through to wright-phillips - who should have scored - and had some nice touches but diarra and co ran rings around him and the rest of your midfield...
007, we were all (most anyway) delighted when 'ary stayed, as such we have put our faith in him. Mate Benji didnt want to go, but 'arry wanted Defoe more than he needed Benji, simple thing really. He's offered 9 mill for a 29 year old and paid about 7.5 mill for a 25 year old. I was gutted on deadline day, but when you step back and look, it has to be great business doesnt it! He let Matty and Gary O go, but you cant say he's too far off the mark can you!
Back to business... Pompey were something else today and I can't think of one player who had an off day... Hermann was brilliant and for me looked like a premiership player for the first time, Diarra is just something else he bossed the middle and god knows how good we will be when Muntari goes back... Baros & Defoe are gonna make a fantastic partership they are two intelligent playes who struck up an understanding straight away.. anybody worried about replacing Benji work rate should look at Baros and he ani;t even match fit yet... Defoe is an edge of the seat player the first we've had for a long time.. he was pumped up and single minded and really enjoyed his goal... Pompey not only lived with Chelsea today we matched them in every department - a superb display by a superb team ... For those you not lucky enough to be at the game ..believe me when I say that if we can play like that every week Euro is a cert...
Blue Is The Colour, complete dullard! Without the ref in your pocket, we would have won anyway. bye dinlow.
you cant argue with what you've said p4me, benji and defoe as a pairing would be something else but unless the deal to citeh does fall through it wont happen - the deal on the table for both was too good to refuse, a 20 goal a season man is what we have asked for for years, now we have it... i dont like the way business has been conducted but what can you do - its they way it will be and in terms of who has gone and who has arrived overall i think the right things have been done, the benji deal really hurts tho...
chix, re: The Herminator, he looked better todaay because he is a centre back and today played there for the first time, he's been out of position all season, but he did do great today.
i wasnt at the game, but i saw it and i loved every minute, you are spot on Chix defoe does have you on the egde of your seat - i was there several times, almost feel off once...
Agreed Chix the Hermanator was top drawer today. He even had me on my feet after a world class tackle. I too can't wait for Muntari to come back - him and Diarra are going to be formidable. In fact Diarra positively makes Muntari, who is quality, look ordinary. Like I said in my article the other day, I strongly believe another run is on our way!
all were good, must give a mention to hughesie who again came in and did a fantastic job for us, he's such a crackin' player to have in the squad and always does a job... paramount and the herminator were both good, as was sol who has really been off his game recently.
funny how you all say ballack was ordinary when even several of the professional pundits are saying he was MOTM. i won't bother defending my argument. what's the point? you've got your little minds already made up.
Yeah Hughes has this knack of playing fantastically against the top 4 sides. Other times he's pretty average.
Little minds! How old are you? Very mature argument mate.
R/D just go, you and that other muppet blue is the colour are obviously only looking through your I can only see chelsea players glasses. grow some more brain cells then come back and think again. Diarra was head and shoulders better than any other midfielder on the pitch today.
i dont think weve said ballack was ordinary RadioactiveD, he had a decent game as i say, but come on lets be fair in all honesty those 'professional pundits' almost always wax lyrical about the 'bigger clubs' anyway and more often than not favour them and their players, so it is little wonder these 'professional pundits' would be...
Ok Bert! That was Ballack after his bandaging, I thought he was very average, pulling out of tackles
Sorry to butt in lads but did you read the Benjanigate latest? I just posted this on MCFC V... The picture is becoming clearer. Exactly when was the lad told to go to Manchester is what I'd like to know? If he does join The Blues it will be good to know he is up for it: "I'm still hopeful that the move will go through," Benjani told the Manchester Evening News. "I want to play for Manchester City." Speaking of the rush on Thursday evening, the Zimbabwean added: "I had to drive from Portsmouth up to London to catch my flight at 7pm. "I got there in time but the flight was cancelled. By the time I got up to Manchester, it was too late to get everything done in time. "I'm here and still hoping everything can be sorted out so that I can continue my career with Manchester City."
Johnny Baguette
Dont know what to think about benjigate anymore mate.
That's good to hear. I'm happy to hear he's happy.
ballack is good, I like him, but it aint really about that is it. your out the title race, and so decide to take your anger out on us, lets face it, chelsea will never be the team was, you play ***** football, spend money as if its nothing, and got where you are simply because of that. now ***** off!"
dave for me there was a man of the match and that was Diarra, quite brilliant, we need him to stay
johnny baguette your team screwed up you deliberatly fuqd up the forms
sorry dave that was meant to be Dave
Terrific game. Thought Pamarot was great and Herminator look solid. "Blue is the Colour"...the only reason you lot got a point and it wasn't 3-1 Pompey is because you got two " Big4" favours from the ref. Still, at least we set you straight about any hope of winning the title this year didn't we mate !
Johnson has been culled from the England squad
Just seen that Paul leaves England with no specialist Right back. Only Richards and Brwon who are both really centre backs. Still keep going Glen.
He'll get another chance, Jamo held his place down, I reckon he is in with a real chance of starting
After todays game aswell, thought he was teriffic.
Bl00dy marvellous. HR is building a great team. Diarra was awesome & the front two will just get better. Once Diop & Muntari atre in the middle with Diarra & Nico & obviously Distin back in defence we should be very solid.
Pompey4me..."Without the ref in your pocket, we would have won anyway. bye dinlow." ...What can I say..?
Blue is the colour
I do however understand why you lot are so excited, this draw here will guarantee you lot will be playing in Europe....oh no, sorry it wont, but it means youŽll qualify for ....what...?
Blue is the colour
Good game. No really poor players on either side. Worst on the pitch was the referee. Some poor decisions which mainly went against Pompey including the handball by Chelsea in the penalty area. But worse was the number of times he got between the player with the ball and the player most likely to receive the ball in short passing situations. This left the receiver "blind" as to when the ball was actually passed and where it was going. Fair enough he has to keep up with play but he doesn't need to become part of it. Re Anelka and Defoes goals, neither were offside; the relays clearly showed them onside. Re: Benji, what do you expect him to say "no I don't want to go I hate Man C". Be realistic if it is likely he will be a Man C player he wants the supporters onside not against him. Once the Africans are back who is going to miss out in the line up? Everyone played well this week. Mvuemba showed so good touches. Davis was good but I don't think the style of play we will probably adopt now will suit him. A nice position to be in for HR but not for the players. Will Kanu stay? I think his days are numbered and at best he will start on the bench but as HR has to give hima contract for next season if he is in the squad for 20 games, I can see him being dropped.
Blue is the colour: Speaking of girls, my wife really really enjoyed Petr Cech and Bollack's do' they share the same hairdresser in knightsbridge ? ...
...and you won because of 2 uncalled hand balls & a missed red card which you would not have gotten away with but for being a "top4" club. But its 2 points that cost you a shot at the title so live with it, And the best part is it's too late for your gangster tsar owner to spend his millions to buy himself the title.
Well MOTD showed it was a definite penalty, but their angle for the offside was nowhere near, but trust me it was miles off!
Blue is the colour, comment like you made - which i deleted - might be 'acceptable' on vital chelski but they arent here, now ***** off you muppet...
1 word.....AWSOME!!!!
No worries Rug, weŽre a bit more used to visiting fans and banter I guess, so no hard feelings, but IŽll make sure to remind your fans who pop over to our forum, that since you keep things on a certain level, so will we.
Blue is the colour
well dont you think calling someone a 'retard' is taking things abit to far? yep, i like a bit of banter but there is banter and that aint banter mate...
as paultsmouth said elsewhere it was a crackin' match between two sides that were ery evenly matched on the day - either could have won, and arguably had either the other couldn't have felt too aggrieved... that said a draw possibly was the fairest result...
Retard, muppet, Pompey fan, moron, ****wit,...some might take it as a insult, most of it we see everyday...
Blue is the colour
well as 'im' the editor here and i get to approve or delete comments - and i have probably only ever deleted a handful - i personally take offence to the word 'retard' so if it is used, i will delete it... tbh mate i can see you just want to try and wind people up 'with your banter' - fair enough, whatever floats your boat i guess...
im s aspurs fan but just want to say im glad defoe went to you, lad he went to a good team, that will play him at 9m its a bargain mate!! ur my 2nd team now lol
Cheers Darren... On his first showing he looked well worth the money... got better as the game went on and in some respects if he'd had started a brightly as he finished Chelsea would have left with nothing.... But I was more than happy to settle for a draw before the game so I'll take the point... Spuds got a good point too.. but shame about that 'ugly git' Tevez...
Johnny Baguette: of course Benjani is going to say he wants to sign for Man City - what else is he to say when his (ex?) gaffer at Pompey did the footballing equivalent of cutting off his nuts.
in fact he'd probably jump at the chance of Derby or Wigan too -
thanks for a close game and good luck for the rest of the season!
Hey Merlin, nice to 'speak' to someone human from your site. Win, lose or draw, you are always welcome here mate.
Must say, was a bit scared towards the end when Defoe went through! Diarra was class!
it was a crackin' game wasnt it, but then again the game at the bridge was the same wasnt it. thankfully tho this time we got something, and a point was the minimum we deserved here... good luck for the rest of the season fellas.
great game, should have won it..... Chelsea were lucky, I heard they had the ref on the bus on the way back home haha... Have to say it the topical songs were awesome! HR has done an exceptional job and after all, he runs a business!
