United 2-0 Pompey

We kept the FA cup dream alive with victory over Plymouth at the weekend, tonight we returned to league action and had the simple matter of a routine visit to Old Trafford - easy! Few gave us a chance, and they were proved right...

Sol Campbell - back from injury, Sean Davis and Milan Baros - for his debut - all came in with Hermann Hreidarsson, Pedro Mendes and Dave Nugent making way, all bar Nugent to the bench - but he is injured anyway. This bench was looking threadbare!

2 goals in 3 minutes from Cristiano Ronaldo put United 2-0 up after 13 minutes and it could and probably should have been more in the end.

The Match
The pressure was on from United from the start and finally in the 10th minute after we lost the ball too easily in midfield we were opened up and Cristiano Ronaldo made no mistake, slotting past David James.

Minutes later a needless foul by Sol Campbell gave Ronaldo another chance and his fantastically struck effort left James standing with no chance, no one would have saved it though.

We came into the game slightly more after this, the 2nd goal was unstoppable - in terms of its strike - but both were preventable. We were letting ourselves down though by keeping on giving the ball away too cheaply.

Another needlessly conceded free kick gave Ronaldo another chance, but this time James was able to save and then the ball was cleared for a corner. But from this corner Wes Brown had a chance, luckily he volleyed narrowly over.

Noe Pamarot 'took one for the team' when he pulled back Ji-Sung Park who was bursting free after we lost possession on the edge of the United box, and soon after a break from Patrice Evra saw another change come and go for United as Wayne Rooney failed to make a decent enough connection.

Trying to become the architects of our own downfall again a promising free kick saw us play suicidal headers not once, but twice with Lauren then Pamarot the culprits. This allowed United to break at pace and an effort from Nani was well enough struck but the direction was missing otherwise it would have been 3-0.

I was more than pleased when half time came as we were all over the place, and did not look at all like we could get back into the game at all. It was going to take the half time talk of all half time talks to change things around...

2 changes were made at half time off went Lauren and Sylvain Distin - who must have been injured and on came Arnold Mvuemba and Hermann Hreidarsson.

A decent break from us early in the 2nd half could not quite see Benjani get his shot or pass away, then James as called into action again saving from Rio Ferdinand's header.

Campbell just was not on his game and another mistake - and a very poor one at that - gifted Rooney a chance, luckily for us his lob over James did not have the power and he was able to get back and safely claim it before it went in.

We were better in the 2nd half and at least threatened a little but United still had half chances and forced James into a couple of routine saves but James again showed his class with a double save as United poured forward, Pamarot then made a fantastic saving challenge with a goal looking nailed on.

The final Pompey change came with 12 minutes to play, off went Milan Baros with Richard Hughes coming on to a chorus of boos - clearly we were 'happy' to settle for a 2-0 defeat...

United had further chances in the closing minutes with Anderson going the closest, as his effort drifted inches wide.

Match Summary
No doubt Harry Redknapp will give a 'anything you get from United or any of the top 4 is a bonus' speech... Yep, maybe this is true but this does not cover the lacklustre performance that we saw for most of the game.

Defeat to United at Old Trafford is nothing to be ashamed of, but the 1st half showing was. We had no heart or spirit and seemed to lack ambition and effort, and kept giving the ball away cheaply which was causing our own problems as well as United played. The 2nd half was better though, but 2-0 could and probably should have been worse to be honest - so we were bloody lucky on that score. But - there is always a but - both the goals that were scored were avoidable, but the free kick strike - that was needlessly given away - from Cristiano Ronaldo was unstoppable, probably the best free kick I have seen...

For large periods we 'carried' too many which was a worry, but not as much as losing Sylvain Distin at half time, which must have been due to injury? Lassana Diarra was again the pick of the bunch for us.

A word on the travelling Pompey fans who were again fantastic, they never stopped singing for the whole game.

Errrrr.....What can I say but typical Pompey away performance against the top 4. Our once strong point, defence, is starting to look very out of touch, sluggish and lacking in pace. I honestly think this will be Sol's final season with us.

Baros is clearly unfit.

Well… I've just had to sit in a pub with a bunch of London Man Utd supporters, I have to make my point somehow. :(

not the best performance, but something we can build on. plenty of room to improve...and we did only loose 2-0!

Lauren? More like Stan Laurel, Campbell is starting to look leggy, but to be fair, Ronaldo can make any defender look like that, Baros was out of sync, Davis not match sharp, plus points would be Mvuemba, I honestl;y thought he shored the midfield up alongside Diarra. Mendes must have slipped down the pecking order, 1 average game and he is out.

You can't bench mark this game. It's gone move on. We'll have Diop & Muntari back soon & they give us so mumch defensively & going forward. It's the games which are realistically winnable that should concern us. Baros will improve with fitness. I hope Distin is ok, sky said hamstring. We'll Chelski out of the way & have a good go at those around & below us. PS. Be grateful it was only 2-0 it could have been 10.

Yeah definitely matt. We were very lucky to only lose by 2 and I said at half time that I'd be happy with that as an end score.

In the back of my mind, I fancy us on Saturday. But knowing our performances against Chelsea it just isn't going to happen. We really need someone to link the defence to the attack and even if we do get 'Guiterrez' tomorrow it's unlikely that any impact will happen quick enough to change Saturday's outcome. Baros certainly didn't change today's.

It was an improvement though, normally we lose 3-0 at Old Trafford!

We could have got completely zomped, What a Frre Kick though tbh. Baros did not look good, however give him a game or two to fit in. Sol as said above did not look great. What is wrong with Sylvan? Arnold M looked good as did LD-a good layer.

yep we could and should have got well and truely spanked tonight - so we should be thankful... i just wish that we could lose this 'defeatist' attitude when we player 'the big 4'. i dont mean us, i mean the team we go into these games almost accepting defeat before we even play - and more often than not play that way. we may as well not even play if we are going to be like that...

We were completely outclassed except for James. Possibly the best Man U team ever including the Busby Babes- although it is hard to compare different eras. If they had gone all out for 90 minutes we could have lost 10 nil. Positives- it shows us how far we have to go to be at the top; Mvuemba played the best I've seen him. Negatives- I won't be too hard on Baros as it was his first game, but he didnt impress me. Kranjkcar played a shocker and our it showed the team thinks 1 pass at a time and doesn't move off the ball. It also showed we need proper wing men not fill ins.

Now for all of you who said I was nuts. The Times has just reported that Pompey is up for sale for 60 million. Right that we are up for sale although they are 12 months behind me in saying so. Wrong with the price. It is closer to 160 million. Two interested parties , one Arab and one Chinese ( thats my info not from the newspapers) both have the money and huge resources. Rug will confirm that I gave him the information before the start of the season.

Yeah we really weren't great at all. Made painful viewing at times. Jamo was outstanding again, and we did well to keep the score down to 2 to be fair. Great news that the Preston game is on Sky though. Lovin' that.

i'll mention the name - it was me, but come frattonaussie you cannot tell me we started the game with a 4-4-2 formation - your having a laugh arent you mate... benji played wide right, up top, wide left all over the shop but i still disagree that we were 4-4-2 at any stage last night... most the time it was baros up front on his own!

I know what you mean still the wizz, hate having to watch pompey united in london the pubs are always full of them! And I agree about campbell, he has been awesome and i hope he picks up his game again, but he seems to be lacking the motivation to really push himself at the mo... looking for offsides far to often.

We were completely outplayed by a fantastic team, with great individuals who look like thay enjoy every minute of the game. Where was Aubey are we going to see him? Lauren was pitiful, get rid of him to Mallorca, Diarra grafted all night and did himself proud, Jammo was decent as usual, but the rest, you were ona lower plane to United, doesnt the truth hurt.
