Pompey 0 - Spurs 1

Fortress Fratton

Sat 15-12-07, 3pm

Attendance: 20520

Pompey 0-1 Spurs

We returned to the Fortress today hoping to finally end the baron run of three straight 0-0 league draws, as struggling Spurs came to town, but they went away with all 3 points after a 1-0 win.

Sean Davis was fit but had to settle for a place on the bench as Pedro Mendes kept his place after a fine showing against Villa. Jamie Ashdown returned to the bench so took over from Asmir Begovic as backup keeper - there was no place for Kanu.

We were poor, we never got going and although they did not have to be great Spurs got the win that they deserved as Dimitar Berbatov ended our 9 month unbeaten home run and this seasons 11 game unbeaten run.

The Match
John Utaka started brightly, a good run saw him threaten and then from a Pedro Mendes pass he could not quite make the most of it, but early signs were promising from him after disappointing performances recently - that was a false dawn, we carried him once again... it is time for him to have 'a rest'.

On the whole it was a quiet opening 15 minutes or so, but Spurs probably started slightly the brighter and Darren Bent went close with a curling effort from the edge of the area. Spurs then took the lead when Steed Malbranque touched home after David James had saved from Kevin Prince Boateng - but this was ruled out by the assistants flag for offside.

Pompey looked like they might have been woken up by this - but it was a false dawn - and a good move saw Glen Johnson deliver a fine ball into the box that Niko Kranjcar ran onto but he could not get his head to it.

Dimitar Berbatov lead a Spurs break and then got on the end of the break too with his effort coming back off the bar, but again the flag was already up as he was offside.

We were finding it difficult to get going, with the midfield struggling to get into the game in the opening 30 minutes with Papa Bouba Diop's effort summing thing up... what a woeful effort it was!

With Benjani waiting in the middle, again Utaka went on a good run but unfortunately he could not pull the ball back to the waiting striker and the chance passed, with Spurs then breaking away with Berbatov eventually denied by a last ditch challenge by Sol Campbell.

As the final 5 minutes of the half approached Spurs had a great opportunity with a free kick on the edge of the area after a foul by Mendes but this was defended well at the expense of a Spurs corner and the danger was cleared.

'Disappointment' was all that could I could say sum up the 1st half showing from Pompey with so many flattering to deceive - but the plus was we were still level at the break and were fairly comfortable at the back. 4-4-2 was needed in the 2nd half was my thinking, but would Harry Redknapp make this change at the break...

A change was made a half time, a striker was not brought on though as Sean Davis came on for Mendes but a switch to 4-4-2 was made nevertheless as Utaka pushed up alongside Benjani.

We were flat again in the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half with Spurs looking more promising and were looking the better side - Spurs needed to be put under more pressure at the back, afterall it was thought that they were suspect at the back...

The second change that was desperately needed was made 20 minutes into the 2nd half as Dave Nugent came on for Sulley Muntari, who found it very difficult to get into this game.

After Spurs had broke quickly and Berbatov went round James we were able to scrape it clear and then broke ourselves and won a corner, from this corner Nugent got his head to the ball, but he could not hit the target - but it was a good effort nonetheless.

Much like he had been in the meeting last season Noe Pamarot was forced off with an injury, this injury saw Hermann Hreidarsson come on for the final 17 minutes - with this being his first outing since his own injury some weeks ago.

10 minutes from time a break involving Jamie O'Hara and Aaron Lennon ended with Berbatov finishing to give Spurs the lead - a lead that they did deserve.

You could not see anyway back from this... and O'Hara almost added a second, but his effort was deflected away for a corner. Then as the 3 minutes of injury time were announced Jermain Defoe struck the woodwork.

Match Summary
We were very poor today and got what we deserved, Spurs were the better side and did deserve to win.

This is a very disappointing result, and with all respect to Spurs this is an unacceptable result as my thinking is that we should not be accepting defeats to anyone at home, but if we cannot score - which we are not doing - at home the best we will do is draw...

But we have to keep positive, yep we lost at home to the mighty Spurs - who proved their 'superiority' over us and will no doubt tell us this again ;-) - but lets not get all doom and gloom, we are going to lose how we react to it will be the key.

A disappointing result and a shame that our streak is finally finished, on the other hand I am happy that Nuge made an appearance, and was pretty active in there again

we carried utaka again, we may as well let him sit on the bench and just start with 10 outfield players - he has to come out of the side, he has been poor for around 2 months now... disagree with benji tho, obviously i wasnt there but when he keeps being put out wide right he is wasted play him up top with nuge... 4-4-2 NEEDS to be used at home!

we were poor today and we need to desperately try something different at home as our 'away formation' isnt working at home, 4 home games running without a goal shows this... but, as i said in my summary, lets not get all doom and gloom now, 1 defeat in 3 months isnt bad is it... this 'could' give us the kick up the ass that we needed at home and could start us turning around this home form to.

Had to settle for listening on the radio today - blessing in disguise? But it came over we played rubbish - fair play to you Spurs for your win. Why oh why doesn't Matty play - should have come on at half time for Utaka (or perhaps started?) as well as Davies for Mendes, who was on thin ice for being sent off. Lets be positive and hope it is the kick up the ass we need, and respond by beating Liverpool away next week (esp as I'm going!)

The fact you lot thought this was a dead cert 3 points for you was ridiculous....portsmouth have had a great start this season, but i think you may of got carried away a little early...we scored 102 goals last season in all comps, and with the same attacking players in midfield and up front, this win isnt surprising at all, as we have been turning the tide since Ramos took over...the only surprise was how you lot thought you would breeze past us! well, up until we carved you open at "fortress fratton"

Disappointing day just didn't perform. However we changed the formation from 4-5-1 to 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 nothing went right. Lethargic as though they all had flu or something. Atmosphere in the ground was flat too. Strange and difficult to explain to the TV as well but Matt and I tried our best while Chix looked for somewhere warm.

Well put Gleamer - But I will add that Spurs (although still not as great as they think they are) deserved the three points against the poorest Pompey performance of the season - we were awful and the only bright spot was Nugent coming on, Benji workedhard but he's no 20 a season man and when you look at Lennon, Berbativ and Lennon (sorry Spurs not Bent they are class although not all of them showed it all of the time today ... But thought Berbatov when he dropped off gave us all sort of problems ... Mendes was dreadful, Diop had his boots on the wrong feet, Nico could get a dead ball above 6 inches (problems at corners !!) Johnson was on another planet.. Even Sol and Dist and Jamo didn't play anything like the way they can. Well done Spurs you did desreed the three points ... but save you gloating... It futile and no matter how good you are your still a small team in Arsenal !!

Harry has put together a decent side since returning and Pompey have had a great start to the season, you are where we expected to be, that said, take Johnson, Campbell and Distin out of your starting team (as Bale, King, Dawson missing) and then look at the teams man on man, this was never going to be a whitewash. Despite the poor start to the season, this is the same team with a couple of pluses that has finished 5th twice in a row. Hope you do Liverpool next week.

I'll post what I posted in the other topic - We were beaten all over the park today. Tottenham's fans outsung, outwitted and outchanted us all game. Robinson's kicks were far superior to Jamo's, Kaboul had the measure of Benjani, Tottenham's midfield picked up all the 50/50's and their wingers looked far more dangerous. I can't believe Harry has played the same system through all of these home games when clearly it isn't working. They hustled us off the ball all game, forcing mistakes and then when Spurs had the ball we did very little to close them down. We need a new striker - a Yakubu, who can hold up the ball turn and use his pace to the goal. Benjani looks tired.

Also rug - it's a bit of a joke calling it Fortress Fratton. In nothing of the such this year. Some of our fans are an absolute disgrace. As soon as Berbatov scored, floods of Pompey 'fans' left the ground and with 10 minutes to go the team really needs the fans to get behind them. A lot of goals are scored in the last 10 mins of football games. Also the lack of singing from the South Stand is starting to get on my nerves. Sometimes I feel like the only one and almost an outcast from the other team.

KatieDawson, you cannot base our season on this one performance, which was poor and we got what we deserved... our away form has been fantastic this season, weve won our last 6 away games on the bounce - breaking records on the way - for whatever reason we cant get going at home this season... i dont want to start this whole 'slagging each other off thing again' but i think more than a fair few spurs fans know a thing about being 'deluded', maybe some pompey fans are being deluded by voting that way but after the years of depression weve had i think they have probably earnt that right...

as said before 1 defeat in 9 months means fratton is a still fortress stillthewhizz... just because we might not be winning like we were last season it doesnt stop becoming this does it? football is an experiensive business isnt it - it keeps some 'true' fans away these days, it certainly prices me out all to often with the costs of travelling too, so i dont often get to games these days... i do think you have to have a bit of give and take tho, the players need to be lifted by the fans but the fans also need to be lift by the players too dont they... i really do reckon that when we can finally score that goal at home the atmosphere will change...

4me... picking up on your point earlier the crowd were definately up for it today the first ten minutes in the Fratton had songs coming from sections I've not heard from before .... but ti soon died when it was obvious that the players were not up for it... People can knock the atmosphere this season if they like but I think the Fratton especially needs a spark.. if it would have had one today I think the roof would have come off ... especially against Spurs because not a lot of Pompey like them.. (for what ever reason).... Let's not be too quick to knock the crowd (as we are part of it) but I feel it's give and take and the players are definately not giving at home at least... It also doesn't help having the bottom bar shut at the back of the Fratton End it is absolute choas at the back of the Fratton End these days and I'm sure if the health and Safety executive got hold of it it would have a field .... Fratton End Season Ticket Holder = Customers of the Club in my book ... but in Pompey's I think means another fool who we can extract some dosh from and treat like a bit of cattle if Pompey are in the entertainment they we should demand our money back. Don't get me wrong I am Pompey through and through as all of you know but it's about time the commercial side of the club woke up a little bit........ Rant over

As a Pompey resident the game left a big grin on my face. Certainly made the atmosphere at work all the more lively! Obviously, it was the first time I watched Pompey at home this seaso, and when you surrendered your unbeaten home record I had a feeling the excuses would come out such as "we were crap.... some players underpeformed.... the tactics were wrong...etc....". I actually thought that for only the second or third time this season we actually defended as a team, worked hard to not give your lot any space on the ball and competed for the loose ball well. We also created many chances and looked dangerous every time we had the ball. It's not that Pompey were awful, we just stopped you from playing. That was my view from the Milton End. By the way, loving that new roof as well. All it did was just make that end colder! All in all, very pleased with our first league win on our travels this season.
