Three and easy for Pompey!

1 - 2

Home Park

15-08-15, 3pm

Attendance: 11,476

If you told us Pompey would have played 3 and won 3 from games against Dagenham, Derby and Plymouth to start the season NO Pompey fan around would have turned this down, right?

That, even if it might not have been expected, has happened to - apparently so I've read - give us our best start to a season since 1988 by winning the first 3-matches? This became the case as we won, fairly comfortably in my opinion, 2-1 against Plymouth at Home Park on Saturday.

Momentum keeps going, and long may this continue! Paul Cook's Blue & White Army!

Paultsmouth cannot do a match report this week, I'd asked in the forum - left it late admittedly - if someone could...but as much as I could do this, as I'll cover this plenty in the post-match fall out, some forum thoughts shared after the game are going to act as the 'match report' if you will.

First up Pompeytim, said:

A really good day out.

Pompey played some good stuff at times. The 2nd quarter was mainly Argyle & Pompey became scrappy, but 2nd half was mostly Pompey. The last 5 mins when they brought it back to 2-1 was a bit hair raising!

Tubbs looked a bit lost again. I think I prefer Stockley. Some nice flowing stuff at times but Argyle were no pushovers.

Good showing from the fans. Seemed like we sold nearly all of our allocation & made lots of noise.

Caught up with some good friends too. What not to like?

Police almost created an incident by holding the Pompey fans back outside of the ground for no apparent reason (there was no bad feeling from what I could see) & this causes the lunatic fringe to scuffle with the Police. Needless & totally avoidable. Poor policing in my humble opinion.

A good day & we march on!!

That, in that thread, was followed up by pompeyweller:

Thoroughly pleased with the result in a tricky venue against a team we have a poor record against. I think Plymouth will have a good season, they are dangerous and kept Burgess and Clarke on their toes at times but we generally controlled a lot of the game, particularly after half time, again without creating an awful lot.

I thought Tubbs worked tirelessly and I believe the goals will come from open play but we do miss a bit of height at times (Barry Corr, Paul McCallum?) But plenty more to come still I think.

I thought Evans and Bennett were off the pace a bit, Bennett was too central and didn't make enough runs in the channels to support the full backs, he seemed to leave it to Roberts and Tubbs to do the grafting, he should have been replaced by Chaplin in my opinion. Evans was second best to a few second balls and didn't cover for Davies enough.

But minor gripes in a perfect start for Pompey on a lovely sunny day in Devon.

And the Pasty was delicious!

You can of course also have some of eastneydave's comment in his Sunday Chimes column from today too...

Played 3 won 3, in all competitions, it doesn't get better than that does it - although could it get better still?

Roll on Crawley and then Morecambe, another 6pts this week?!

Star Player

I'd probably have to say that Big Nige again stood out and looks like he'll be a powerhouse in a central midfield role.

The player we've always thought he could be? Hopefully so and the Yaya Toure of L2, we'll have to remember his birthday cake though...
