Pompey slumped to their second successive league defeat at the hands of league leaders Burton on SkySports One on Sunday afternoon. The Blues came off the back on a brilliant midweek JPT win against higher league opposition Yeovil, however were beaten by a Brewers' side that came in and out the game unbeaten.

Team: Jones; Wynter, Robinson, Ertl (c), Shorey; Hollands, Dunne; Wallace, Westcarr, Holmes; Taylor

No slow starts this time, at least not from Burton who went ahead in the 2nd minute. A scuffed shot rolled across the box through a sleeping Pompey defence and was met for an easy tap in by McGurk. Pompey already with a mountain to climb.

BURTON 1-0 Pompey

Burton continued to dominate for the next twenty minutes, but not creating anything worthy of a scare. Pompey slowly grew into the game and finished the side well on top. Danny Hollands saw a few volleys fligh over and Ryan Taylor frightened the Albion crowd as he nearly met Westcarr's near post cross, only to be denied by a defender.

Pompey finished the half with possession at 60/40 in favour of Pompey.

HT: Burton 1-0 Pompey

Pompey went in search of an equaliser early on, and nearly did so as Johnny Ertl found himself in space out wide. Turtle put a great ball across the box and the ball was met twice by Alex Wynter, but both times the full back was denied by fortunate blocks.

Just as Pompey looked like they were to draw level, Lukas Akins turned the Pompey defence and fired an excellent finish into the corner of the Pompey net. An hour gone and Pompey broken hearted.

BURTON 2-0 Pompey

Pompey piled on the pressure from then on in, with substitute Miles Storey causing havoc but failing to put the ball in the back of the net. Plenty of corners were to be wasted for Pompey as they tried to find a way back in the game, but it wasn't meant to be.

FT: Burton 2-0 Pompey

Burton return to the top of the table and Pompey remain in 9th after 6 games. Burton are flying and Pompey are in need of a turnaround following two straight league defeats.

Awford spoke of his disappointment after the game, specifically with the finishing, but is confident Pompey can return to form in the next game. Something we all hope for!

Star Player

Really, Craig Westcarr was the only player to show threat throughout the game. Mainly carving out his own chances, as little support came from the wing with usually influential Ricky Holmes having a poor one.

Westcarr is certainly proving his worth, showing that really he is at least League One standard. Hopefully he and Pompey can start scoring goals again on Saturday.
