Pompey cause cup upset

Pompey claimed their first victory of the 14/15 season with a brilliant Capital One Cup win over League One Peterborough. Darren Ferguson's side succumbed to an excellent Blues display, in front of the first Fratton crowd of the season. Andy Awford's men have now caused an early cup upset.

Pompey started brightly against the Posh, creating early chances and shooting opportunities, however nothing to really test United keeper Ben Alnwick.
It wasn't long before their efforts were rewarded though, as Miles Storey finished excellently into the bottom corner with a super sweet, low strike after great build up from Butler and Westcarr. A home debut goal from the on-loan Swindon man.
POMPEY 1-0 Posh
As the first half progressed, there was no let up from Awfs' men and they came close to doubling the lead on several occasions. They first saw Nigel Atangana's shot blocked by Ricardo Santos, then Danny Hollands goal bound header kept out by Alnwick.
They were unable to score a second though, but a very impressive forst half from the Blues.

This time it was the Posh's turn to put on an attacking threat as the visitors started the second half with more intent. Pompey 'keeper Paul Jones had other ideas though when Jack Payne hit a rocket, confidently holding the Peterborough skipper's shot.
Then came a decisive moment in the game, as Peterborough come forward again. Kgosi Ntlhe lobbed Jones and found the back of the net, however his finish was ruled out for offside. Pompey escaping by the skin of their teeth.
However despite this scare, Pompey looked pretty comfortable all over the park and looked the side more in control.
Goalscorer Miles Storey was soon after forced off through injury, but his tweet after the game revealed it was only a migraine, so nothing to worry about. Alex Wynter was also substituted through injury, the pair being replaced by Ryan Bird and Adam Webster respectively.
Another definitive moment came 20 minutes from time, as Pompey looked certain to have doubled their lead through Craig Westcarr. The striker battled himself through to one-on-one with the keeper, only for his today finish to be ruled out for handball. This sent Andy Awford mad, as the Pompey gaffer furiously protested Against what turned out to be a very poor decision from referee Brendan Malone.
Joe Devera was close to scoring an own goal late on as he cleared a dangerous ball, but Pompey survived the late Posh onslaught and the full time whistle was greeted with cheers from the Fratton fans,

Pompey progress into the second round of the Capital One Cup and will discover their opponents for the the next tie following the draw tonight. Premier League opposition comes in this round, so a fascinating tie could be set up.
Awford was left very proud though , following a fantastic Pompey performance against a side only recently relegated from the Championship. A first win of he new season is now under the club's belt, let's hope many more follow.
