Adrift And Rudderless

Defeat at Oldham's Boundary Park yesterday has left Pompey adrift at the bottom of League One and now a huge twelve points from safety. To show what is meant by a six pointer, had Pompey won that gap would have been just six.

Guy made changes to a winning side - well OK they had drawn the last two - some enforced, some positional; whatever it did not work. Pompey as always started poorly, conceded on eleven minutes when Simon Eastwood let a long range effort slip under his body.

Another mountain to climb and sadly Pompey do not have a team of sherpas but a collection of free transfers and promising youngsters. Shortly after half-time the game was effectively over when Sam Sodje was shown a straight red after getting involved in an incident that did not involve him.

The last thirty five minutes was made up of home pressure only punctuated by the occasional Pompey break. There was hope but in the end it was the lead that was never really threatened. The nearest Oldham came to extending their lead came when Jordan Obita, who was sent off playing for Pompey in the reverse fixture, hit the woodwork.

Next up MK Dons come to Fratton Park on Tuesday for the first time - wrap up warm everyone!! That is followed next Saturday to play Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road (or whatever they call it now).
