Pompey 2 - Scunthorpe 1

Fratton

29/9/12

Attendance:

Duck broken

Pompey finally tasted that winning feeling at home in the league, 2 days short of October, but 3 points went on the board nonetheless.

The game was in keeping with most others we have seen this term, Pompey let in early goal to the impressive Clarke, but this time we fought back, with a little luck at times, another important factor we have missed this season.

Gyepes was the unlikely goal scorer, a header was well saved but fell kindly to McLeod, he spun nicely on the ball, missed it completely and Gyepes showed him how to do it.

McLeod almost redeemed himself shortly after, cutting in from the left flank and smashing the bar.

Debutant Thomas then wriggled to the edge of the area, his entry was blocked on the edge but the Lino flagged for a pen, pompey's first of the season. After the shoot out in the paint pot trophy, you felt Pompey were be sure to score, Howard though hit his pen at a kind height for sub keeper Severn, he parried the ball to safety.

The second half sank into some monotonous periods, Scunthorpe did clip the bar with a wayward cross but that was as good as it was getting.

The game seemed to lift however when Harris came on for Harley who was off the pace all game, he made one of his trademark cut ins from the left and saw his shot deflected wide.

It was he and Thomas who combined to miss a great chance shortly after, McLeod made a good run down the right, his perfect cross was ballooned over by the aforementioned as the collided going for it.

Pompey were not to be denied this time though, Howard fired in another cross, this time Thomas finding the space to nod home with the minutes ticking off.

McLeod had just enough time to show the best and worst of himself, he powered forward leaving defenders floundering, his shimmy put both keeper and the last man on the floor, but with the goal gaping could only smash the ball against the post.

Star Player

Gyepes took the award on the day, many disagreed, but I felt he was a powerhouse in the air and held the defence together, and of course he got the goal to get us on terms.
