Kanu Believe It?

Kanu believe it!

Pompey maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a resounding 4-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Two goals from Kanu (7 & 57) either side of Benjani`s (50) first goal of the season had the game wrapped up inside an hour. Substitute Svetoslav Todorov (93) would add a fourth deep into injury time.

A foul on Kanu saw Pompey awarded the first free kick of the game within striking distance, which Dejan Stefanovic did superbly, only a wonderful Mark Schwarzer save would deny the skipper his first goal of the season.

The resulting corner would however see Pompey take the lead in the 7th minute. After failing to clear the ball Kanu poached from the edge of the 6 yard box to poke home.

A Noe Pamarot (in for the injured Glen Johnson) mistake let in Stewart Downing who had it not been for David James quickly off his line would have equalised.

A bright start would see David Thompson shot from the edge of the area following Benjani`s knock back.

Some good defending from Linvoy Primus denied Mark Viduka a certain goal as Boro applied some pressure of their own as they searched for an equaliser.

Then Yakubu would get on the end of another dangerous Downing corner, but his header lacked power and fell straight into the hands of David James.

On 19 minutes Pompey had another free kick in an almost identical position to that of the Stefanovic effort. This time Thompson tried his luck, but despite being again on target the effort was straight at Schwarzer.

Gaizka Mendieta`s first attempt on goal of the match would be from 20 yards, but his curling effort failed to trouble James at all.

James however would be tested by the next Boro effort. Mendieta`s flick on found Yakubu but the former Pompey man shot straight at James.

Gary O`Neil, who likes scoring against Boro, had his first effort on goal with a header from the edge of the box, but that went wide of the target.

A minute later and Schwarzer was called into action again, needing to turn away another Kanu effort from the corner of the penalty box.

As half time approached a sustained period of Boro possession saw a 30 yard Mendieta fee kick just narrowly go wide.

Yakubu would have the first effort of the second half, but again he missed the target with a long ranged effort.

The 50th minute saw Pompey go 2-0 up with Benjani`s 1st league goal of the season. A corner was played short to Thompson who delivered a fine ball into the area and Benjani opened his account for the season with a header.

Moments after Pompey`s second Mendieta would have another crack at goal, his 25 yard volley just went over the bar, although I feel that James had it covered.

James would have to be at his best to deny Boro twice in a matter of seconds. Firstly he had to be at full stretch to tip over Downing`s quickly taken free kick, then from the corner would again have to dive full stretch to turn a header round the post.

In the 57th minute following some sustained Boro pressure Pompey broke and counter attacked. A 60 yard Kanu run ended with a devilishly delightful chip over the advancing Schwarzer to put Pompey 3-0 up!

As the game reached the hour mark Boro tried to increase the number of players they had on the field to 13 as two unwanted visitors entered the field of play. One dressed in what appeared to be a chicken uniform?

At the midway point of the second half James would again be equal to the task put in front of him as he comfortably denied Lee Cattermole following a Sean Davis mistake.

Substitute James Morrison`s first influence on the game would be to shoot into the side netting as Boro went in search of a consolation goal.

With eight minutes left, and shortly after Ognjen Koroman had made his second debut for Pompey when coming on as a sub Kanu would be withdrawn to a standing ovation from the Pompey fans as Svetoslav Todorov came on.

The first booking came with only two minutes to play (two more, both Boro would follow) as Benjani`s through ball found Todorov in an offside position, and as a result of playing on he received a yellow.

In the 93rd minute Toddy lobbed over Schwarzer and into the net for Pompey`s fourth, just remaining onside following a fine pass from Davis.

So we now go into the International break 2nd in the Premiership with 7 points, 7 goals and none conceded in over four and a half hours of football! Kanu has already scored 4 goals, having managed just 5 in the whole of last season; Toddy has 2 and Benji 1.

Things are certainly looking good. Role on Wigan on September 9th...

I've sat here listening to the game on Solent, but think I'm dreaming! I'm always a proud Portsmouth fan, but right now it's just so easy to be!

Banished the wife & daughter upstairs & watched the sky match. Had predicted a draw but feared the worse with GJ out. Utterly gobsmacked. Will need to apologise to the neighbours in the morning after the sreams of delight. It makes you wonder if we had signed some of 'those' strikers would Kanu have been on the pitch? Keep it boys.

Flippin brilliant. My wife wanted to go and watch snakes in a plane at the flicks tonight. 21:30 showing. In the end she enjoyed the match so much she decided not to go!! (Thanks the lord for that!!) Have to say I was retiscent about signing Kanu, but so far he is making me eat my words, and I am delighted. Must also say similar for Pamarot, I was worried about him covering for Johnson, but I have to say he was excellent, and Downing never really got a chance going.

kanu and campbell have proved to be influential free transfers and i will eat my words over stef, hes playing v well so far this season. im already thinking weve done enough to stave of a relegation battle... well we would have to do something pretty sinister to get back there and pompey wouldnt do that, would they ?

Utterly fantastic, I too was concerned about Johnson's absence but Pamarot did a superb job! The team as a whole were glorious, and to think Boro had just seen off Chelsea and were probably fairly confident of a win before the game! All three strikers scoring too Keep it up lads, it's plain to see that you're enjoying your current form as much as we are!

KANU races to the front as joint Prem goalscorer - and to think he could have bagged 5 with the penalty miss. My brother was born in Middlesborough - suck eggs mate. There are 3 swear words in clubs SCUNTHORPE, ARSENAL and F*****G MANCHESTER UNITED. One of them still heads us but Arsenal are well behind. How the mighty fall. We musn't get carried away as 40 points is still a long way away and as Harry has said we cannot afford injuries. I still hope we sign a couple before 31/8 just to shore up til January. Now everyone can't laugh down here in OZ anymore that I support a small, insignificant club....and 2 aussies were on the receiving end of a convict whipping this morning.

id also like to add that its nice to know all strikers involved today hit the target convincingly. we only need squad depth and i think we are EASILY midtable material. our trouble is that we are in the same fight as some of the division (AV, WHU, Wigan, Charlton, Everton) and we must maintain confidence, maintain a sold unconceedable defence, maintain a good striker rate and maintain the closing down we did tonight. FANTASTIC! harry houdini is workin the magic!

I just have to say WoooHoooo ! Great sides are often built on great defences and Harry's definitely built one thanks to Sol and James - who lifted the rest up to new high standards! And BENJANI has scored ! I think he's been great for us and his partnership with Toddy and now Kanu is simply working brilliantly ! Pleased to hear Pamarot and Thompson played well tonight - gives hope that we can cope with a few injuries - let's just pray that Sol is an ever present !

having gorged my self on humble pie and being lucky enough not to have to work today i watched the sky re -run at 00.45. The more i see it the more shocked i am by Pamarot, i thought his performance against Wigan was a 1 off, he actually aint bad.....and who ever though we'd find Stefanovic playing so well in his "wrong position". As for Sol and Linvoy, they seem so in tune together LoL :- ) the rumours must start soon. Fabulous solo effort by Kanu, amazing work and poached goal by benjani and Toddys lovely finish!! When your 3 non scoring strikers are all scoring, things could be worse. The midfield was hard working and harried away to slow boro down all night buying the defence time, most impressive, that new old boy Koroman, i thought he was just ok before but bringing him back seems a very shrewd move. I genuinly thought man of the match could / should have gone to Pamarot or Linvoy, in fact any of Sols defence. Im not sure the week lay off is a blessing or not, but you probably couldnt ask for a beter re-start with a somewhat deflated wigan at home. PUP

well we should keep our heads straight and get on with the job. my theory for a good place is that we should beat all those in mid-table finishing positions. blackburn, mancity, middlesborough and wigan are ALL in this category. you have to say wigan at HOME has got to be 3 points.

pessimist you sound like Kanu !! Some games work rate alone will not get you a point let alone three. Ive said i would be happy with a point at Boro and the same goes for our visit to Charlton on the 16th. I do think though like Wigan last year we are becoming a team where the sum is greater than the parts. The advantage we may have over the Wigans ?Boros etc is we should have some proven ability on the bench what with LuaLua & Mendes back within a month.and Glen before the injuries traditionally really bite in december. A few more signings yes please ( i am not comfatable with griffin as cover), but things are not likely to be desperate before january.

I can only echo whats been said already everybody was great. was working so Listened to the match on the radio, and recorded the re run at 00:45 but had to stay up and watch it anyway. Always thought Kanu might do well for us. Pamarot has always had ability, was just too young when he first came to us, Still worried if we get any more injuries though.

yep that Nugent story has been running for a couple of days, they also tried to buy an Ipswich striker. Nugent would be ideal. Im not sure of the relevance of the Everton, was there a Rooney or his transfer money around, actually they seemed to do better without him which would sort of back up the discussion yesterday about the adbvantage of not having big ego's in a team i.e Anelka etc
