Pompey 0 - Ipswich 1

Fratton

14/2/12

Attendance:

Pompey fall flat

Pompey failed with the tack on the pitch last night, comprehensively outplayed by Ipswich, the fans didn't turn up in quite as many numbers as we would of hoped either, the wall of noise was slow coming but kicked in around the 9 o'clock mark, what you saw last night was the hardcore of support, Pompey had 250,000 turn out for a FA cup parade, but in context only 5% of those many are the true nucleas of the support base.

Others come of course when the team is playing well, others of course have financial constraits, others have taken to their armchairs after our fall from grace, that is human nature, but for all the outcry 14,000 is basically the true heartbeat of the club.

On the field of course not a lot happened in the way of cheer for us fans, Pompey couldn't be faulted for effort, but the team looked leggy and far too many passes went astray at key times or were soimply overhit.

Ipswich were well worth the three points, beside scoring the hit the woodwork 3 times, Pompey had just a ghost goal to shout about, it should have gone down as an OG against Emmanuel-Thomas, but such are the breaks when luck is against you.

Ipswich were well on top by the time they took the lead, Henderson had almost had a blooper moment the ball squirming free from his grasp but ultimately not crossing the line, a few pop shots had flown in as well, Pompey had offered nothing as an attacking unit.

A header had bounced back off the bar as both team watched expecting it to sail over, the the goal came from a similar route, this time Chopra was on hand to blast home as the ball fell kindly to him via the woodwork.

Pompey huffed and puffed but again could create little, the air of expectancy perhaps affecting a few, fatigue others.

Lawrence limped off with what looked like a calf strain early on, Kitson getting a run out in a withdrawn role.

The second half had little to do with football as far as the fans were concerned, the noise was cranked up and it was all about matters elsewhere, just as well as Pompey were struggling to find a way back in.

By the time Halford had seen his launch ruled out, Ipswich had already wasted severtal opportunities to stretch their lead, it was the same after as well, the post again coming to our rescue.

Halford had time to limp off with a jarred knee before the fans again took centre stage, about 15,000 staying behind to chant on.

(well, maybe 500 or so) There weren't 15,000 at the game! :D

Why is it this season we've put in a good display against teams that should whip us, but in the next match we put in an abject display against teams we should beat?

Ipswich have a jinx over us at Fratton Park. Sometimes you get a game that is one too many & this was it. I went with my mate Dave, the nightmare was it could be our last home game, though I was never convinced. Nothing in midfield especially in front of the full backs. All the poison off the field will at times kill us on it!

First team squad so short on numbers that the manager has no choice but to play the same players week in and week out. The result is opposition managers know what side we are putting out and how we will play. It's a no brainer really. Lots of time to prepare their tactics. Also. not enough players to rest and rotate. We will be in serious trouble if we are not allowed to bring in two or three loanees. Some really tough games coming up and points may be at a premium!

Your injury problems could cause you some serious worries if you can't bring in a loanie or three. Saw the way a load of your fans stayed behind to show your support and was deeply impressed.
