Managerless Pompey continue to flourish

3 - 1

Pompey made it two home wins on the bounce after scoring twice in the second half to defeat Doncaster, Luke Verney scored twice and Kitson continuing his new lease of life with the other.

Pompey as expected swapped Ward for Huseklepp once more, this is obviously a sign of more attacking intent at home, Benjani failed his fitness battle and never made the squad.

Pompey got off to an absolute flyer, Henderson launched a long scud of a kick, it took one bounce and Varney flicked past the on-rushing Sullivan in the goal, barely two minutes had passed and Pompey looked good.

Not five minutes were on the clock when Kitson rose to meet a centre, his header beat the 'keeper once more but lacked pace, the ball being hacked clear from the line.

Kitson had just enough time to head another loose ball wide before Pompey decided to doze off, Lawrence and Mullins in midfield suddenly kept losing posession and their passing went awry, this let Doncaster back into the game when they looked out of it, now it was they pressing forward and Pompey looking all over the place.

Pompey had a warning when Bennett let fly form 20 yards, his shot looked headed for the top corner but Henderson managed to claw it away. From the resulting corner though, the ball was squared to Gillett, he let fly and the ball screamed home to pull Donny level, you couldn't say it wasn't coming.

Half time came and Pompey left the field to a few muted boos, such was there complete lack of cohesion for the last 30 minutes.

The second half was a different story, Pompey although not at their most fluent best took a stranglehold, Rocha planted an early free header well wide to signal theitr intent.

Huseklepp had a shot blocked out and then Kitson had a header well saved.

Pompey though got the goal they deserved with 20 to go, Norris headed up and over Sullivan, the ball got close but the onrushing Kitson made sure, heading home under pressure.

As Doncaster attacked, Pompey broke once more, Kitson sent Huseklepp through, he nodded forward and then slid in Varney to sweep home and make the game safe.

So, Pompey head into anew week with speculation rife about who the next manager will be, the caretakers are ticking things nicely along.

Star Player

Ben Haim shone for me, I know Varney got the two goals, but if you watch him Ben Haim really is different class

TBH man of the match by a country mile for me... First ten minutes were great .. then we died badly.. once we realised we could win the game we woke up and won it at a canter... Rocha was off his game big time (at times) today... but all in all a good performance for 65 minutes .. but not great by any stretch .. but three valuable points.. Well done lads .

Think your being a tad harsh ther Chix did't think Rocha was that bad though i thought Doncaster had the better of the first half to apart from maybe the first 15 minutes, still to many hit and hope balls though dont know why we do that we are much better when we keep the ball on the deck the second half we went up a gear, and were unlucky not to score more, not a great performance i grant you, but good enough to win the game.

so Glad TBH is proving his quality, i said back along when it came to light he would be staying he'd be brilliant at this level and simply he is. but i think Varney definitely deserves all the praise he's getting he's doing precisely what Nuge never could, tapping the easy 1's in, he's clearly a natural calm finisher and 3 in 3 is proof of that, long may it continue! can't forget the the 2 from Norris either, finally he's being allowed to attack and be the player we actually brought from Town!

Thought along the lines of Chix. First 10 decent then a dip for half an hour. 2nd half decent enough. When we realised we had them we stepped it up. Listened to express on the way home; they live in Pompey LaLa land! We were worth the 3pts but thats about it! That is a poor side, we'd of been murdered by a better team!

TBH was my choice closely followed by Erik

I really enjoyed 60 mins of the game - never thought we would lose it, thought Tal was the class act of the game, maybe the issue is his passing is too smart for all but Erik; who to me seems to get more confident the more he plays. Varney could turn out to be the 20 goals a season man that POTTY COTTEY - (remember him ? ) said we didn't have. On performances so far there is no rush to secure a manager but the players are making the job easier. Id be happy with O G S got the job, same for BD and looking back at S O'D's performances and the status of his team at his dismissal I think he was hard done by, so no great concerns there. Don't want Curbishley, Boothroyd or Dowie personally.

Nice to see most agree with my MOM, I think people often just go with the goalscorers too much, Ben Haim is looking much like he can right now.

Penton, totally agree with you. Express FM were understandably happy that we'd won, again, and so was I, but there is room for improvement. We showed a lot of lack of organisation, which allowed Barnsley's goal, and poor old Mullins is on his own in midfield. But we do have some really good players and when we get the new boss in, whoever he is, he has a lot to work with, and he should be able to make things even better. If we could've played for 90 minutes like we did in the last 20 we'd be invincible. Guy and Stuart are doing a great job in the meantime though!

TBH head & shoulders above everyone else. Thought the ref had a great game, didn't notice him out there which is a good sign.
26/10/2011 08:15:00
good point that, refs are often the first ones that we look to blame for something but seldom do we praise a good performance - not noticing him usually is a good sign, so i think all in all he did have a good game...
yep TBH man of the match, could see why varney got it but TBH was really good again - will add a few quid extra to his value, or do we have to let him go on a free if someone comes in for him?
