Pompey romp to early pre-season win

Pompey have been training only a week or so, but after a goalless first half against our local non-league neighbours, the second period was more than fruitful, 4 goals flew in the net, many more could of been notched if not for Ashmore in the Havant goal.

Pompey will be more than pleased with the contributions of their new men, Varney capped an energetic display with a volleyed goalnear the end, what was more promising was his fledgling partnership with Kitson, the Nugent/Kitson partnership never really fired, Kitson is much maligned at Fratton, but on this outing maybe his fortunes may take a lift, he too notched a goal, following up his initial effort to nonchantly slot home.

Greg Halford was the star of the first half, celebrating his new permenant deal he sprayed the ball from the back like Franz Beckenbauer, smashing the bar from 30 yards in the process. Pearce had a solid introduction, while Ben Haim made a return to Pompey colours, maybe a sign that his wages dispute is over? Another point of note was how much the Israeli has slimmed down.

Joel Ward was his ever running self, notching the first goal himself after latching on to a young Ryan Williams centre.

Hayden Mullins was next up, not one for a tap in, he blasted another screamer into the net, Varnet centering from the left.

Steve Cotterill will be more than happy with his teams first outing, Norris was all action as we hoped and a few of the youngsters did themselves no harm either.

Star Player

Varney made a very promising debut, full of running and pace with a goel to boot.

4-0 not bad. Get a few more through the door and Lawrence and the King to come back and we might just be ok. It's nice feeling positive for once!!!!

Think TBH has realised if he wants out he needs to play himself into the shop window; as long as Pompey benefit who cares. Just need to get Dainty Kitten scoring a few more and it might start to look dangerously positive. Not expecting too much against Chelski but let's hope a properly managed ( in every sense) US trip is a step in the right direction. As I said - all rather worryingly positive.

To be honest I can't how Kitson could do much worse this season. Hopefully with better service he can do the job this year and be the striker he was at reading. Was Ben Haim any good tonight!?? I heard he looked in good shape? Probably because he can't afford to eat now no one is paying him, lol.

well hopefully varney will be the strike partner kitson needs cos he obviously couldn't play with nugent and with a good midfield behind them they could bang in a few goals between them

Promising start, hopefully the performance against Chelsea will be as encoraging. I'd say it won't be too tricky finding a stream for that game, I checked bet365 who occasionally stream live events, and this one was on it.

I didn't expect us to win to be honest. However, good signs; Norris seemed to be ok, Varney was great, Ward may have showed he wasn't a one-season wonder last year and Ben Haim returning means he is surely in SC's plans. And what about Sam Magri? He made his debut and he should be recalled to the side. I think that SC should take care of the young ones... they all looked promising and if they are not ready for first team football, at least we can fill the bench and give them a run-out of football in cup matches. Anyway, we are not going to win any cups this season, aren't we? We need a third keeper.... get Ashmore!

A third keeper?! I don't think we need more keepers than strikers!

Nice report, cheers Paultsmouth! Not even a sniff of anything negative either, which is always a winner! Surprised to hear about TBH laying off the pies too, interesting to see if SC will use him.

good start to pre-season, most impressive. good run-out, good result and good team performance. tougher challenges ahead tho so no one should get 'carried away' by this...

PM, we have had this chat several times - whilst i understand what you are saying it is by no means a priority to have 3 1st team keepers, even less so given other areas are more of a priority...
if paddy gets injured hendo comes in. a youth keeper will be sub keeper at a push but the chances are an emergency loan could come in - if stretched this can happen at any time, even outside of transfer windows, for keepers so paddy and hendo are fine for me.
