Pompey finally found the winning formula once more, goals from Kitson and Ward saw Pompey home, the only downside was the second yellow for Jonathan Hogg who has really grown into his position in midfield.

Pompey made their one expected change, Rocha a straight replacement for Mokoena, funnily enough coinciding with only our fourth clean sheet of the season, guess which defender has played in all of them?

Pompey went at the game with purpose, no clear chances were fashioned early on, but Pompey looked more assured than they do at Fratton these days, the defence was firm and the midfield probed, Kitson was the figurehead, Nugent and Lawrence wide either side of him.
Lawrence was first to have a sniff for Pompey, his shot lacked conviction however and Woods saved comfortably.
For Doncaster, Coppinger who scored in the reverse fixture had their best chance of the half, he never tested Ashdown this time though, making a hash of his effort.

As half time approached, Pompey gained the initiative, a loopy ball into the box found its way to Halford, his bibbly-bobbly shot wriggled through and hit a post, it popped up and Kitson headed home, getting a smack in his chops for his efforts.
So half-time arrived and Pompey had a lead for the first time in what seemed weeks, more of the same please Pompey!

The second half was barely under way when the lead was doubled, another long ball was nodded on, this time Ward received it, he though supplied the finish of a veteran, lifting the ball beautifully over Woods and into the net for his 3rd of the season, maybe Pompey have found a source of goals from midfield?

Doncaster predictably tried to force the issue for the rest of the match, Ashdown however was rarely troubled, his main contribution was fielding a few long ones and goal kicks.

Pompey were looking really comfortable defending a lead for the first time in an age, but as the game petered out though, Hogg was dismissed for deliberate handball, after seeing the event on the box though, he was closing his man down quickly, a more lenient ref may well of let it go.
Still Pompey had their first win since before Christmas, Hogg's dismissal may have tainted the gloss a little, but the points at least pushed us 7 points form the drop zone, that in itself a welcome sight.

As the players trudged off, Cotterill and O'Driscoll had a heated exchange, about what who knows, but the handshake was certainly a squeezy one if you know what I mean!

Star Player

Ward. I love the bloke (in a manly way) He plays wherever he is asked and never lets you down, the centre midfield role really suits him, he obviously likes Doncaster as well, netting twice against them now, his goal though was a sign of his growing maturity, other young lads would of lashed it, but his finish was top drawer.

Isn't it odd, Potty Cottey caves in on Herman and Rocha, then strangely the defensive performance improves dramatically. It's a funny old game!

Just on my way home now. It was not pretty at times but it was effective! 3pts will do me fine

Ridiculous sending off, he'll be missed for Barnsley, but a great performance and a well earned 3 points. Hopefully it's the start of a good run, our fixtures look kind enough for us to go on a winning streak.

Ahhh a win, how welcome too. Got some very winnable games coming up with Barnsley, S****s & Sheff Utd. Shame about Hogg but we Mokoena could be back to cover.

I am very pleased for Kitson. He needed this goal. Moko will be back and play in midfield, just behind Mullins I guess. Hermann and Rocha are very experienced ofcourse, but I still want to see a back four that has never been tried this season: Halford, Mokoena, Rocha and Hreidarsson.

The reason Rocha hasn't played is a succession of calf-tears, just as the reason Herman wasn't playing was that he was still coming back from injury. We didn't miss Mokoena much. In the absence of the club sorting out his visa/work permit (and they did make a lot of staff redundant), shouldn't he take some responsibility for it himself? He is a grown adult man after all. Delighted for young Ward, it shows that he's a Pompey lad through and through.
