Norwich 0 - Pompey 2

Carrow rd

12/12/10

Attendance:

Pompey win in Norfolk, just bootiful!

Last time out and Pompey beat third placed Swansea on their own turf, this time it was the turn of fourth placed Norwich to get a dose.

Pompey went with an unchanged line-up once more, stability is the way at Cotterill towers, Norwich were missing the influential Holt.

The game started fairly evenly, Pompey not getting off to the customary slow start by any means, in fact Lawrence almost made it a dream start, curling a free-kick into the side netting in only the third minute.

Norwich had a gilt edged chance to break the deadlock quarter of an hour later, Chris Martin squared for Simeon Jackson, he shot straight at the grateful Ashdown however and Pompey hung on.
Norwich were buoyed by the near miss however and contrived to miss some great chances, foiled by wayward shooting and inspired keeping by Ashdown, Jackson nodded over a corner, Barnett doing likewise. Martin was denied by a great save from Ashdown and he then pushed away a Lansbury drive to keep the canary tide at bay.

Half-time came with Pompey still equal, and still very much in the game.

The second half was a much more equal contest, Pompey almost breaking the deadlock, Lawrence going closer than before this time, his 30 yard drive swerved and smashed a post with Ruddy floundering.

Ashdown proved his worth once more, this time Hoolahan was the victim of his desire to keep a clean sheet.

Pompey broke the deadlock at last in the 73rd minute, Nugent burst down the wing and squared for a grateful Kitson to score and break his 9 match duck from 6 yards out, Pompey were on the march once more.

Norwich had to throw everything forward now, Fox was denied by that man Ashdown once more and Lansbury drilled over from close in.

With time ticking by, Pompey subbed Lawrence for Sonko, little did they know but it would cost him a goal, Nugent bundled his way into the box and Barnett tumbled him over to earn Pompey a pen and himself a second yellow.

With Lawrence off, Halford stepped up to the white spot, but just like Lawrence he made no mistake to send Pompey home with three points and himself with his 3rd goal of a productive loan spell.

Star Player

Paddy Ashdown deseves the plaudits for keeping Pompey in the match when Norwich were on top, others may have scored, but he ultimately built the platform.

Keep saying it, but I just love the Championship!!

Paultsmouth, After 10 games your man finally puts a shift in and what happens- he scores; just like Nugent. If we are honest we were riding our luck at times but hey, play badly, survive come good and win at the end;even though I don't like to tempt fate that's play off form. Be interesting to see what happens with Brown and Hughes, one more game and their contract extensions. Wonder what effect that will have particularly given the loanee's max game limiting appearances.
Russellm
Brown has got to figure hasn't he? If he gets left out it means our situation is no better than a year ago

Must have been tricky to pick the man of the match today, I counted 4 really strong contenders, and Rocha sounded absolutely bulletproof. 6 points from two very tricky away trips, great times.

Daylight robbery. But well played. A professional performance from you lot. We wasted a bucket-load of chances whilst you scored with pretty much your first real chance of the game. Disappointing for us but if you don't take your chances, you're asking for trouble. We really missed Holt today. Jackson was shockingly awful and might as well have been wearing a Pompey shirt. Anyway, well done and good luck for the rest of the season.

Cheers Bowthorpe, and your right about the wasted chances. Other than the free kick in the first minute, we were awful first half, and could and maybe should have been 2 or 3 down going in at the break, but we came out second half and the game was pretty even. End to end attacking and it could have went either way, thankfully we finished our chances and defended heroically at times, and fought hard for the 3 points. On another day it might have (and often has) gone the other way, but we're all pretty sick of playing great and losing, so we know exactly how you're feeling!

Great performance, I am not sure we will see the 'Hermonator' or Dickinson for while bar injury / suspensions

Over the moon with that win, lines us up nicely for the Scunny next week. Looking forward to that match already as having footy withdrawal symptoms !! PUP

I was watching Havant&looville lose at home this afternoon. I've stopped listening to the Pompey game on the radio at the same time because if I do, both teams lose. But my phone told me via the web that we were 1-0 up, and as we came away there was a van with the radio on and we just heard that the 2nd goal had gone in. Sweet! Scummers lost as well! It's not about the possession or how many chances or corners you have. Football's about how many goals you score.

Just back from my weekend in Nowrich seeing my brother for xmas & what an extra present that was, seeing the boys give Delia's canaries a good stuffing. Took my lucky mascot of a daughter, for her first league away game. That's 6 wins from 6 in 2010 for her. Nugent was the difference, quite solid in most places but Utaka needs shooting.
