Pompey 2 - Doncaster 3

Pompey crash

Pompey's recent impressive home record came to a chundering halt today, Doncaster played well enough in the first half, but individual errors cost us dearly.

Doncaster are supposedly the Arsenal of the championship, I don't know about that but they certainly played a part in frantic open spell.
Pompey almost scored within seconds, Kitson flicked on a Utaka cross and Nugent headed straight into Sullivan's arms. Healey retorted by firing wide, then Halford strolled into the opposing area and smashed a shot against the bar with Sullivan well beaten.

Pompey looked hesitant at the back however, Ashdown has already got down well low to his right when we fell behind, Hayter was the recipitent as a Healey cross was well dummied by Oster and he had the goal at his mercy, 1-0 to the hooped side.

Pompey were not willing to learn a lesson though, Sonko played a ball out of defence straight to a Doncaster bloke, Brown was clattered as he tried to redeem his mate, but the ref was to wave play on (not for the last time), the ball was played into Coppinger and he lifted over Ashdown and Pompey had built a mountain to climb.

Pompey had their chances though, Brown whipped in a low cross that Kanu never connected with and Kitson did likewise, Nugent did find the net with a lob but had already been flagged as he shot.

Second half and Cotterill had obviously seen enough, Kanu was not having a great impact and was replaced by Ward, he went on the right and Nugent pushed forward, Rocha made a welcome return in place of Sonko, our loan man was having another of those games that he frequented early on in the season.

Our tempo was much, much better this half, it almost counted after only 5 minutes of the restart, Ward fired in a cross that Nugent flung himself at, he missed and Kitson following up smashed in a drive from an acute angle that Sullivan beat away.

Utaka had really come alive now, he was bursting forward with pace, one forray was snuffed out well, then he burst forward again, his cross rolled along the goal line and Ward gleefully smashed home form a yard out for his first senior goal.
Pompey were really in the ascendency now, Dickinson was also firing in some lovely crosses from the left, but it was Halford who carved the next chance, his crossed free-kick found Rocha's head but he guided it narrowly wide as the Fratton end held its breath.

Nugent was the architect of the equaliser as well, he gave the right back twisted blood as he shimmied forwards, his cross was half met by Nugent, the squirmed forward and then Nugent almopst rolled the ball in off his back as he literally stumbled it in.

It looked like there would only be one winner now, Halford almnost provided it as he headed goalwards only for the ball to be hacked clear.
Pompey, after absolutely dominating the second period fell to an absolute sucker punch, Healey was given far to much room 25 yards out, he took aim and fired in a beauty that gave Ashdown no chance, for all P{ompey's second hal endeavour we were behind once more.

Nugent fired wide once more and then Utaka took it upon himself to wage a one man assault, he skipped past endless challenges only to find the side netting when goal of the season was waiting.

Dickinson found just enough time to become the second blues player to be red carded in a week, he went straight through hayter and saw a straight red to become the latest suspended player, Hermann awaits.

So Pompey, ultimately paid the price for a poor first half showing, the second was lots better and the result was harsh in the end, but lessons need to be learned.

Star Player

I wanted to give it Michael Brown who really made my son feel at ease as mascot, but nothing can take away from a sparkling Utaka performance on the left, he is really showing a passion again at last.

Thanks to Pompey however for making my son's day memorable as mascot, he thoroughly enjoyed it and will long remember it, Brownie in particular made a fuss of him as he was his personal mascot, thanks though to Tony on the coaching staff who had the kids from half one.

Hope you all had a good day. Wish I could have been a mascot but I may be slightly to old now! In terms of the game I have no qualms. Silly mistakes cost us. Doncaster did not deserve to win, but similiar suspects gifted it to them! A game we, on balance, should have really won...

Loved Brownie hauling that injured bloke over the touchline sonthstvhe could get on with taking the corner. He must be the most irritating bloke to okay against. Major respect to Utaka for his efforts. Hopefully Dicko's suspension will see a bit more solidity at left back.

Yet again there's nothing boring about watching Pompey. After a dire first half performance they really went for it in the second half, and if it hadn't been for some missed chances ... Great spirited fightback to get it back to 2-2 and a great shame it was Doncaster who got the third goal and not us. Very uplifted though by listening to Express FM after the game, and hearing all the positive talk, even after a defeat. Really makes me feel we've turned a corner. Not that long ago it was doom and gloom every week.

Didn't see it but it sounded like a crock of ship 1st half. No good chasing games, We sounded tactically inept 1st half...SC again? Surely if it appears to all and sundry we're getting over run and need to push up, why the bloody heck does it take till half time to change things? Get off your asp SC and change the tactics, you did it at HT so why not as all good managers do and adapt!

some lessons to be learned, such as : Our defence was badly organised yet again, Mok is cannot lead it- proved when Rocha came on. Too much arguing with the Ref yet again, you play to the whistle - pompey's attitude now being commented on in major media. Dicko out of control = again. Dave Kitson continually "couldnt be bothered to get back on side" yet again, closing down atttack routes and frustrating his team mates" not my words Paul, some 2-3 hundred in Nth Lwr; i do agree though. Kitson phases in and out of seasons- did so at Stoke and Reading before that, we have asmall squad and he needs to phase back in again. Nugent taken off - why when Kitson cant be bothered. I dont believe the if hes fit he plays is a clause in Kitsons contract i think the manager doesnt like Ciftci who made an impact, but brought on way, way too late. Our defence sits way too deep forcing players to come back and get the ball. So far we have proved for one reason or another that we cannot beat the teams of the moment. Positives first 15 of the game, 40 minutes of the second half Utaka, Rocha, Ward (although wasted a couple at the end) and Nugent ( also could have got a two with a bit of composure). Clearly the defence is not sound or sorted - just watch the goals and the team is carrying Kitson- both need resolving, not sure how to do the first when Mok wont take advice from Rocha, the Kitson issue is resolved by a spell on the sidelines. This needs the manager to get over his anti Ciftci stance which i am relaibly informed was the caise of that really odd , im in charge article in the News. Lets be positive about a fightback, lets not be naive and pretend it was a good performance, learn the lessons and there is still time to get back up into the top half by Christmas.
