Pompey in win shock!

Pompey came back from the worst of starts to make the last sixteen of the Carling cup, an early penalty was cancelled out by goals from Aruna Dindane, Danny Webber and Vanden Borre.

Pompey made all the expected changes you would get for the Carling cup, Begovic came back in, Dindane debuted, Yebeda got a start along with Webber and Mullins returned to the fold.

Fans hopes were high of a needed confidence boost, but Mokoena is obviously not the best of learners, he tugged back Anyinsah in the box and Pompey conceded their 5th penalty of the season, Ian Harte's trusty left boot did the rest.
Pompey were all over the shop for the first half hour, Kaboul's drive wide the only real offer at goal, but all of a sudden they were level. Aruna Dindane was found in the box by Utaka, he skipped past the 'keeper and cooly slotted home.
Webber obviously thought "I'll have some of that" Yebeda crossed and found him unmarked to nod home. We might not have been that bright but we had our noses in front.
Second half and it was like the first had started all over again, Carlisle were on the front foot and Pompey looked all over the place once more, but like the first Pompey scored when up against it.
This time Dindane found Vanden Borre who scored his first for the blues with a right-footed shot.
Carlisle were still stretching the Pompey back line, but they held firm and only made their clumsy challenges out of the box this half.
Piquionne came on with only 3 minutes left and should really have scored a confidence booster, Pidgeley saving well from 12 yards.

Star Player

Dindane for actually looking like a goal scorer, Utaka gave a few flashes of his talent though and almost pinched it.

Player Ratings

Took a penalty to beat him

Vanden Borre

Scored one but still stretched.

Clumsy git

Still looks like the only defender who can do his job for 90 minutes.

No gimmes today, passed that mantle on.

Did little wrong

Bit part player now, must miss the Greek sun.

Promising debut

Played one, scored one, that'll do for me!

Bright spells, certainly seemed lively for periods

Goal on his full debut will do him no harm

Manager Rating

Pressure is still on Hart, but a win is a win, although Saturday is far more important.

No way Chix, 451 is never the way to go at home unless u have midfield players always making runs in the box. So glad Dindane got one and webber, I would seriously think about starting those 2 on saturday as freddy needs to prove he can score to stay in the team. Is yebda an attacking midfielder? Also how did johnny u do just behind the strikers. I am still a fan of his because i feel he hasn't had his qualities (pace) utilised properly and feel he has so much to offer. Don't get me wrong it's still no excuse 4 being lazy when playing right midfield but I still think he has a role to play. Good result lads, please take it into saturday and get our league campaign started!!! PUP

Any promise in the Utaka / Dindane partnership? I've lost faith in Piquionne.

I think he is another Benji stillthewhizz but as we all know we haven't got the time for that.

I agree Moley.. 451 at home just invites other teams to have a pop at you OR close up themselves.. That said I am worried about the defence Janice is fine for sure and Ben Haim has gotta probably too much bad press for that mistake on Saturday but Vanden Borre doesn't do it for me at right back and then there is Belhadj... If you look at it that way then 451 does offer protection and can turn into a 433 if needed .. For me the diamond formation is the way to go (Hart is right with this and MUST stick with it) .. use Brown as the anchor to protect the back four .. stick O'Hara or Yebda at the Attacking Midfielder and then deploy Boateng and one of Mullins/Mokoena/Yebda as the two in the middle of the middle .. Up front I'd start with our only two out and out strikers Dindane & Webber.. all this means dropping Smith (which is harsh) and Piquionne (maybe a bit tough) but I think it's the way to go..

Piq.. does work hard that's for sure but he is not a '1' in a 451 in a million years.. I'm sure when Hart signed his players he saw Piq as the provider with Dindane the goalscorer.. Long term I'm sure this is what we will see at a '2' partnership .. but until we get the defence sorted and have to deploy more defensive midfielders to protect them from themselves we are going to see more 433 or 451 (especially away from home) which means Utaka/Smith will all be in with a shout as the third forward/midfielder and then we have Webber as the replacement striker..

If Belhadj doesn't start at left back, who does? I'd like to see him on the left of midfield. Ben Haim's head seems on another planet, I wasn't impressed with him against Bolton or Villa but then he can't be match fit nor can 70% of our team. Are going to get to see Williamson?

what about james, borre, kaboul, benhaim, belhadj, utaka, ohara, brown, prince, dindane, piq .. 4,4,2 utaka right wing ohara left . but dindane can also drop to the left and go 4,5,1

mistakes mistakes mistakes it all goes down to HART . he should be dropping belhadj moka and should of started williamson against bolton as benhaim wasnt and isnt match fit. all boils down to managment descisions/substitutions and have we seen an inspiring on yet this season .

i disagree with the diamond, it doesn't give us anywhere near enough width for my liking but thats not really that much of a problem the main problem is that it offers no protection for our full backs which are both useless at defending.. so actually i'd rather see us either go for a standard 4-4-2 or actually stick with the 4-5-1 come 4-3-3 maybe. as for Hart if he doesn't drop mokoena for the everton game i'm gonna be very close to siding with the get rid crowd, we have plenty of people in the positions he plays and ALL of them would probably do a better job!

Dindanne won't be starting against Everton. Hart admits he is still scared to give him football. Piqiounne should remain in the team and also Smith. For me, the only change should be at RB. Kaboul should replace VDB and Williamson comes in. Obviously I would like to see Yebda instead of Mokoena, but that ain't gonna happen. Really, this team needs to focus at the back. If we manage to do that, we are in for a good result on Saturday.

i dunno mike, our defence is still shakier than our new owner (that was pretty bad i admit but it was that or jelly and that was too obvious lol) so i can see you guys scoring and you've always got a penalty to rely on even if you don't score from free play, so i wouldn't start to get worried just yet, well unless hart drops belhadj and mokoena then ya screwed you got no-one to give you a free goal ;D lol

Just back from the game. I thought Kaboul was our star man tonight. He was a rock in our somewhat shaky defence very closely followed by Johnny Utaka who did really well tonight and made Dindane's goals for him. But to be fair Carlise were not up to much. They huffed and puffed but never really threatened despite having about forty corners! A win will hopefully boost our confidence as we will need it if we want to get anything from Everton! PUP

last night was very good for the first starts and even more demoralising for Belhadj who is clearly so frustrated that he is lashing out at anything and everything. I think Piq will be able to do a job, he will be another Benji. If as i suspect the team sheet announced at lunchtime on Saturday is 4,5,1 we need to start a chant something that simple so that the "simple man" (his words not mine) will get the message; how about 4,4,2 - 4,4,2

even Hart has won a p#*s weak beer game before; what was that other mighty team we beat???? its relevance to the PL is it gets players closer to match fit; in time for Everton i think is debatable.
