Pompey living up to expectations

Pompey shot themselves in the foot once more, Saturday went down to bad luck, but this time we gave a penalty away in injury time to commit hari-kari.

David James sporting hair and 'tache to do Shaft proud, charged out and flattened Larsson to concede a penalty which McFadden duly dispatched.

Vanden Borre made his debut and after all the hype was a real let down, we will have to hope it was nerves, if not we should get his passport straight back out now.

Lee Probert was the referee on the night and could be said to of been a bit of a 'homer' both teams were awful, but Pompey got 5 booked on the night of few bad tackles while Brum got of scot free, the penalty itself has been described by Mark Mudie as one you get at home, but never as the away side, but enough about that prat, and Pompey can once again look at missed chances.

The game itself had few highlights, Pompey had a couple of chances in the second period, notably Mullins who just seemed shocked that the ball reached him and duly did nothing with it, Kranjcar wasted a couple of free-kicks again and also missed a good chance after the penalty when shooting weakly at Hart.

Pompey have it all to do this season, we have been cast as relegation certanties and are now doing our level best to live up to the billing.

Mr.Storrie you have seen first hand what needs to be done, 2 games against average sides, no points, rampant Arsenal are next, time for talks has passed, someone needs to sort the mess out NOW.

Although last year we were in a worse position after 2 games havnig conceded 5 goals in first 2 games....just trying to look on the bright side...

im glad we have played so poor and started so bad because transfer windows still open and the owners now know pompey need quality to stay up.. they need to SHOW US THE MONEY !! if we spend 20million on players and go down we sell them players for about 20million .. if we buy no players and go down we are in the same position.. WHY HAVE AN OWNER WHO DOES INVEST .,

Dindane, Benjani, Thomert, O'Neil, Dos Santos, Odonkor… in fact anyone that is attacking and is going cheap is required for battle. If we sign McCann & *Shittu it'll be a case of damage limitation rather than survival. Even Championship players are too expensive for us so we won't get any fiery English blood in.

*Shittu and McCann are'nt even champoinship players of any usefull degree..would they get into WBA or Magpies...not a chance...we do not have any decent players left...James is old, distan is on his own, and kranch ..well is he bothered. there is No one with quality..no one. not one player is good enough...whats worse...no one will sign for us..once we has HR who could pull birds out of nests, what do we have to offer a player...nowt

just watched the highlights on MoTD. Utaka came across as our ONLY creative, attacking player. surely this must be a mistake?

also, RE the penalty... both players were looking at the ball, they both had a right to go for it. However, anywhere else on the pitch, and it would have been a foul... so it had to be a penalty. it's a shame...

Half the problem is the manager, negative football , nihilistic attitude, completely uninspiring this man does not represent Portsmouth style football. I don't think it was a pen and nor does anybody nut the simpleton Probert but we shouldn't have been in that position. We went to St A for only one thing - not to lose and Hart got what we deserved. 6 more games like this and maybe I will start a chant

although the birmingham player (not sure who it was), did look round, and knew jamo was going for the ball, and may have slightly changed his run to obstruct jamo. Jamo however only had eyes on the ball. still, even with that, it only counts as obstruction of the player has no intention of playing the ball, which he probably did... so it's still a penalty.

Agree with Hammersmithblue. Let's not get too despondent. When you're in a funk in your family life, bad ***** tends to happen at work too. Didn't see today's game, but I thought we weren't too bad against Fulham. If we must play a 4-5-1 then we do need proper wingers and (broken record) one or two more creative attacking midfielders. That Dindane kid looks alright. Let's get him for starts.

The Vital Match Report (above) says Kranjcar missed a good chance after the penalty when shooting weakly at Hart. I really wish he'd have aimed better !!.. think about it !!

Fed up with Hart moaning about being deserted by Lady Luck. You don't need Lady Luck if you play properly, make your chances rather than relying on taking them if they should pop up. For us to be lucky we need to play to create luck and this means with imagination and joy, not this defencefest which Hart keps bunging out there. You see the team he's picked and their formation, your heart sinks and then at the end of the match he says he's disappointed....wake up, Harty!!!

SWAP Nugent for Sh1ttu and McCann? Distin to Villa? Whilst I've tried to remain positive this policy of clearing out essential players and signing utter rubbish will spell (has spelt?) our doom. I want someone to blame. It isn't me, I have two EXPENSIVE season tickets. So, clues, please, to a blameworthy entity.

I think you are all beinga tad bit over the top with the argument of defensive tactics, we were playing away from home against a team in the first home game in the premiership. You only have to look at teh result from Turf Moor to see what sort of effect that can have. I support a 4-5-1 away from home, yes Freddy looked helpless at times without the support but we did have possesion in an away game, we did create very very easy opportunities and wasted them. If he were to play this 451 again brum at home i would join you in anger but i think if we had played a 4 man midfield we probbaly would have scored, then lost 3-1.

Quite a disappointing performance last night. I thought Wilson had a good game, as well as Piquionne, and I didn't think he should have been brought off for Kanu. Mullins should have gone off for Kanu and they should have played two up front. Birmingham were started to look a bit tired then and having the extra man up front could of done it for us.

i agree Bing that a 4-5-1 formation away from home is acceptable, i know it shows little intent to want to win but against the likes of birmingham avoiding defeat away from home is a must - beating them at home likewise, a must...obviously we failed to do this.

it was a tough one PompeyCharlton, welcome by the way, i would have rather seen a more mobile forward come on but kanu was a clear, well clearer, indication that we were settling - all in all i think it was probably the right call at that point to completely shut up shop and take the point...again tho we failed...

if we persist with 4-5-1, and we will, the key thing is that we have wide men that will support the lone striker - if we cannot get these in, or a striker to enable Freddy P to be one of these wide men, which i think he could be, we are done for. [Edited by rug]

chix - I thought the same... but mullins' pass was right to his feet, and much too hard... so actually, it was impressive he managed to get the direction right at all!

Lets get real here, our plight is totally predictable. We all know Hart is not the man for the job, deep down he knows that too. Why doesn't he just do the honourable thing and resign now. His tactics are poor, his team selection is worse, his deals for new players don't make sense. He trots out excuse after excuse in time honoured fashion. The bloke is out of his depth, and sinking fast. He doesn't know how to put it right and we are going to face some good teams soon. Storrie get a new manager now and stop the rot that Hart is imposing on us. It makes football and business sense to sort it now rather than wait until we are so far behind we can't catch up to stave off relegation.

disagree mike. Paul Hart made sure we didnt relegate last year, he can do it again. We have been playing well, despite what the results say. and sure we havent scored but we havent conceded too much eitehr which was the problem last year

Mike is correct, Hart is a poor manager, and is towing the party line as he is required to do by whoever is runing our poor excuse for a football club. We are an embarassment, and this is the first time in my 44 years of following and supporting Pompey that i have felt like this. The players are going through the motions and need to be certain that there is a future for the club. The last two performances have been awful, and below the standard of the Premiership, if the real Arsenal turn up on Saturday it could end up really bad for us, like the 6-0 at Highbury all those years ago, please please sort this mess out before it is too late.

DJ you were obviously watching different 2 different games to me. The Pompey I saw doesn't resemble a team at any level. Hart doesn't send out a team to win, that is partly because he doesn't understand how to. His team selection would baffle Einstein. Without Brian Kidd he is clueless. What has he done about replacing him? Nothing. He reminds me of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther, bumbling around hoping he might trip over the answer. DJ, he won't save us AGAIN because he will get the sack before Christmas. Which is shame because he should resign now. I agree with Owens, I have been going to Fratton Park since 1954 and I have never, never, never seen such a shambles on or off the Park as this. Quite frankly heads at all levels should roll big time.

What I'm most concerned about is that Hart is talking about positives from the performance. It was a poor performance - acknowledge it and start to make it better!

Traceyc, i am afraid he hasnt got a clue how to put it right, he is a terrible choice as manager and unless he goes soon we will pay a high price for his incompetence.

Hart is the cheap option and lets face it which manager which want to come here anyway? We are a disgrace and for the first time in 40 years I am embarassed to say who I support!! Worringly Hart will not resign and even with money who would he attract?

DONT GET ON HARTS BACK YET who are the players hart brought in freddy he has spent 0 so is trying to do the impossible job. he has no contacts to and no money how can he get anyone good in. GIVE HIM SOME MONEY THEN JUDGE HIM ON HIS PLAYERS.

right. theres a couple of things that I disagree with about peoples comments - and the best response is to quote pompeyhussler: "DONT GET ON HARTS BACK". To be perfectly honest, he wouldn't have been my choice. however none of my choices would have touched portsmouth with a bargepole - so we're stuck with him. And the worst possible thing we could do, is get on his back. so... WE'RE STUCK WITH HART LIVE WITH IT
