Pompey 0 - Arsenal Youth 3

Fratton

2/5/09

Attendance:

We came,we saw, we didn't score

Don't believe the hype sang Public Enemy, never truer for Pompey, Arsenal are there for the taking we were told, only the youth team to worry about we heard, well doesn't matter who you play if you go into a match more negative than the South Pole.

Paul Hart has done a great job in bringing Pompey back from the brink, but the man's team selections make me cringe, a holding midfielder is just that, he holds. Pompey played two again in Hughes and Mullins, when you have one man up front it helps if the midfield push forward in support, not 'hold'.

Crouchie was vilified on Saturday for a couple of misses he should of scored, and rightfully so, but when people jump on his back for flicking on to no-one or getting caught in possession, it may have something to do with being the only man in blue in the opposition half!

Anyway, to the game and Pompey's line up made their indications clear, Arsenals however contained a mixture of youth and reserve, Arshavin was the most senior player by a mile, this was acknowleged by Wengers award of the captaincy.

Arsenal made all the early running, but Pompey had the first good chance, Belhadj shooting well wide from the edge of the milton end area, when he should of at least tested Fabianski.
We didn't have to wait long for the first goal however, David James' hands became sponsored by Lurpak and Bendtners weak header squirted in the back of the net. Everyone in the crowd just looked at each other, but it had really gone in.
Hart and Kidd were wildly gesticulating that Pompey should go 4-4-2 from the sidelines, but Pompey had no-one capable of partnering Crouch on the pitch, but Crouch and Belhadj did work a glorious opening on about half an hour, but the former could only lift his shot over Fabianski and wide of the post, it was another glaring miss.
That was about it from Pompey attacking wise first half, but referee Mason endeared himself to the Fratton crowd on 42 minutes by awarding a penalty to Arsenal after Arshavin tumbled under Davis' tackle in the box, I don't now how much more convincing Mason would've needed that the tackle was clean, Arshavin waved a finger to say no penalty, and even pointed to the corner!
Still, Bendtner was not going to waste the chance to double his goals tally, blasting wide of James' dive and into the net.

Second half and Kanu and Utaka replaced Hreidarsson and Pennant, this coincided with Pompey's best spell of the match, my mate offered me 500-1 that Utaka couldn't get a hat-trick, but in the next ten minutes he could so easily of done just that. First up and he dragged a great chance wide, then he skied one over the bar, managed to round Fabianski and fall over and also force one smart save, he really did create more chances for himself in those 10 minutes than in the previous 10 months.

All this pressure was undone in one quick Arsenal move though, Vela picked up a loose ball o the edge of the Pompey box and finished with aplomb, game over.

On 78 minutes and Pompey's afternoon was complete, Pamarot who to be fair was rustier than the tin man in a bucket of brine, hauled down Arshavin and then marched off, his season no doubt over.
Utaka forced another fine save from a free-kick, and then from the follow up Fabianski denied Distin his first Pompey goal with an instinctive block, really not Pompey's day this one.

Star Player

Linvoy Primus, the big man didn't put a foot wrong warming up.

Shame about yesterday..thought it was a pretty poor performance all round and it just shows, if you don't take ur chances against the top sides, you will get punished. As for their 3rd goal, i think we thought vela had swine flu coz we seemed to stay away from him!!

"More negative than the South Pole". (lol) .
"Paul Hart has done a great job in bringing Pompey back from the brink " Correction please Paul ... Paul Hart has done a job in keeping Pompey on the brink ...
Agree that Linvoy was the star though.. Would it have really hurt to bring him on ?? ..
Best fun I had yesterday was singing the songs of yesteryear .. Scot and the Basingstoke boys took us through 30 years of Fratton End songs... He's here, he's there he's every **ing wear Vince Hilaire, Vince Hilaire .. He's fat he's round he's worth a million pound Micky Quinn Micky Quinn.. and so it went on for a good twenty minutes with more laughter than singing... It eventually petered out when we started singing 'One Kevin Harper there's only one Kevin Harper

Reports today are suggesting that hart will be given the job full time, next season. I refer the honerable gentlemen to a previous, long post from Et Tu Pompeii. This is the poorest football we've played in years and I hate it. I'll put this in capitals just to emphasise the point; I'D RATHER PLAY DECENT FOOTBALL AND LOSE. Oh, we did lose, didn't we, but thank goodness we got stuffed playing decent footb . . . . ah, we didn't did we . . . . . To sum up: we get stuffed, field a rubbish team, play defensively, play poorly, miss any chances we have by miles, and most of us sit there looking 'terribly glum'. It doesn't get much worse.

In a different reality: 2002, Redknapp turns down Pompey job - Paul Hart appointed. "I want to make us difficult to beat", he said in an interview following the signing of 5 League Two defensive midfielders. He also confirmed that the signing of Paul merson has been cancelled as it was felt he wouldn't maintain his defensive duties through aging legs. Et Tu Pompeii (and the bloke who made the mistake of writing that letter to 442 mag or whatever) you're a visionary!

Got lots of thoughts about yesterday - so I want to get them out in print. We were as poor yesterday as Arsenal were good, but we were actually really unlucky as well. The first goal was a spill by Jamo that 99 times out of a 100 he would have saved. The second was a penalty that shouldn't have been given. The third was unlucky because Pompey were looking like they were coming back into the game at that point in the second half. And you could say all our missed chances were unlucky too. At least we are creating chances! That is a positive. The fact that our finishing is so poor that we didn't score any of them is not. It's obvious that Crouch needs someone else up front with him. But that's only part of it - its really concerning. Except that there's only 3 games left this season, we're pretty much safe and there will be changes in personnel in the summer. Hopefully there will be new faces in our midfield, which is very poor. I'm not the only one who thinks it might be improved if Basinas played, but apart from that since we had so many departures from midfield, and with injuries to Diop and Niko, Hart doesn't have a lot of scope there. The playing defensively is frustrating, but it does seem to be keeping us up. How many of us complained last season when we parked the bus in front of Arsenal at Fratton and got a 0-0 draw? It was great to see Linvoy - would have loved it if he came on, but we just got teased with him warming up instead. I think that's it, I think I feel better now!

Agreed TracyC, but the important point about last season is, 'and got a 0-0 draw'. NOT stuffed by Arsenal reserves.

It's not that Crouchie needs a partner...the problem is that i think he lacks motivation and hunger a bit. Nothing against him, but when u know you're gonna be playing every week and there's no competition for ur place, u automatically become relaxed and that's showing. Put Kanu in for a game and maybe he'll come back stronger..

tracy - good points. Having watched the Sky coverage last I reappraised my view of the game. Yes Arsenal deserved the three points but we did play some good stuff in spells and boy did we miss some chances. Key was not having either Johnno or Janice at Right Back. Pamarot looked lost the whole game sadly and overweight!

Yep, I don't disagree with any of that Tracy. Have to say its the first time since I have been going to the Park that I thought at Half Time, Oh no, I've got to stay for another 45 minutes of this. Thought the singing was a good laugh but I went home with a thumping headache. Gin and the Fratton End are not a good combination - and don't even mention the bell!!!!

Agreed Tracy, we were unlucky, Crouchy should have scored and that could have turned the game. As for the penalty, having seen MOTD this morning it did look like Distin gave a penalty away earlier, couldn't tell from where I was sitting, and Arshavin pointed to the corner and said it wasn't a penalty. I already liked him as a player and my respect for him has gone up enormously. Could you see Ronaldo reacting in that way? If he continues lke that I see him as player of the season next year already.

Some good comments people - and welcome 'Sad Sack' hope you enjoy Vital Pompey ... A couple of points Crouch does look like he lacks motivation but in fairness our system is making him look like a poor player as he has very few options at times..

i do not think crouchy lacks motivation because he isnt getting the competition, i would think that 'if' lacking motivation it would be due to the fact that he is *****ed off with having to play up front alone!

Crouch needs help up there it all goes back to the midfield not getting up I think its more frustration than motivation with no Krancjar, & today Johnson it's only got worse, but the second half got better with Kanu, & Utaka witch supprised a lot of people.

As Dagenham failed to make the playoffs dose that mean that Matt Ritchie could play in any of the remaining matches? We could do with an attacking midfielder and given the ages of some of the Arsenal players yesterday why not give a 19 year old a chance?

I think Crouchie with less motivation still has a shed load more motivation than some but he's been asked to do the impossible job i.e. to knock down to the Invisible Striker. He may mick up a bit too foten but for me he has a lot of credit in the bank for running his nads off all season for precious little reward.

I think the term 'bad day at the office' is best used for yesterday's performance. I don't think it was a specific person's fault for the loss, moreover, it was the simple fact that Arsenal payed some young guns who were obviously desperate to show Wenger they could play in the first team, and caught us completely off guard. The fact they addapted quickly to our 4-3-3 in the second half shows that Wenger's not mucking about. It was a really wierd game, and we haven't had one in a while, so I'd rather get it out of the way and resume normal service, starting with gritting a draw at Blackburn, then guaranteeing safety by beating Sunderland.

Wenger also played some excellent gamesmanship with the timing of his statement about Aluminum playing for England - timed perfectly to upset England's no. 1, and it worked as well! A couple of weeks ago I had this down as a defeat, it was only recently I started to hope we might get something. Probably underestimated Arsenal's youngsters. This one's out the way now, lets get a win at Blackburn and tie this season up.

Yes it was a bad day at the office, a bad luck day with the ref and injuries played bad luck for us as well. Tactics played by wenger was first class at the start employing Walcott to drop behind Hermann, his speed was too much for our guy to recover.Hart saw this at break and replaced Hermann and adopted a hold up man to help Crouch,If the chances were taken before they got the third goal then ??Who knows It was a frustrating game for us to watch lets hope we get it right next time Play up as always POMPEY!

that is a good shout FP Dec 16th 1972, altho technically i think we could do this, 'officially' i do not think we can... living quite near to plymouth as i do i hear things about argyle and apparenly the two guys they had on loan from blackburn were going back this week to then play a part in the final weeks of the season - as one of them doesnt currently have a 'squad number' at blackburn he cannot get one registered in time or something like that?
so, as much as i would love a hungry, totally committed and up for it young local lad playing i would be surprised if we had given him a squad number this season? that said he was named as part of our uefa cup squad to 'make up the numbers' so i guess he must have a squad number on second thoughts...

A howler by Jamo, a dodgy penalty & lady luck not there when we needed here, topped by some awful finishing! Ummm, been here before. I doubt if we'd had lost 3-0 if the real Arsenal had turned up! Agreed better second half, got to stop this Davis, Hughes & Mullins in midfield, it just invites them onto us! Impressed by Utaka. Kanu brings us so much, maybe he should play as the spare man behind Crouch!
