Pompey 1 - Bolton 0

Fratton

18/4/09

Attendance: 20,158

Safety inches closer

How does 14th sound? Well Pompey are sat there right now, 6 points off the relegation trapdoor with games ticking by, and with 37 points on the board to boot.

Paul Hart surprised no-one except Pennant by keeping faith with Kaboul, Johnson came back in, but it was further upfield alongside the midfield where he re-entered the fray, a posistion he is starting to acclimatise to.
The only other change was Sean Davis in place of Richard Hughes in the centre, Gekas evaporating from the bench in the process.

Matt Taylor recieved polite applause when his name was called out, only a few boos rang out, makes me laugh when a player is forced to leave a club he loves and is then booed on a return!

Pompey certainly didn't look in defensive mood as they came out of the blocks at Bolton, we were pinning the Trotters back and Kaboul was particularly evident as a marauding wing-back, Spurs fans may not believe it but the big man looked as good as any top flight wide man, bombing forward and beating Taylor with ease on countless occasion and firing in a few decent crosses.
Not to be outdone Englands number 2 was enjoying his midfield role once more, he fired in one effort after nutmegging his man that Jaaskelainen parried away, and then repeated the feat a few minutes later, Jaaskelainen again getting behind the ball well and blocking his fierce shot.

Bolton lost a key man after only 12 minutes, Ricardo gardner going down under a heavy Davis challenge and limping off in some discomfort.
On the half hour came arguably Bolton's best chance of the game, James saving well low to his right from Elmander, but straight up to the other end and Johnson did what we have now achieved in 7 of the last 8 matches, you guessed it, smashed one against a post, but credit to Jaaskelainen once more as he got fingertips to it first in what was becoming a one man show for Bolton.
Johnson would have had a hat-trick on another day but the long serving Finn was on top form.

Mullins was next to try his luck, but his effort was scuffed wide.
Remember the purple patch Crouch was in just a couple of weeks ago, well that seemed a distant memory as he recieved one right on his forehead, but inexplicably knocked it back rather than go for goal, chance gone.

5 minutes injury time was signalled (the ref obviously oblivious to my bursting bladder) and Nugent decided to curl one, but his effort just crept past the post with Jaaskelainen watching hopelessly on.

Half-time and it had been all Pompey, but 0-0 it remained, but the chat was all about how much better we looked this week, just the goals were needed to cap it off.

Second half and Bolton looked a bit more ambitious, they were pushing a bit harder but were coming up against a Pompey defence reminiscent of last season.
Kaboul had Pompey's first effort of the half, heading over from a corner with Crouch looking better placed to recieve it.
Pompey continued in vain to break through, but our efforts were either scuffed or lacked power, it was getting to be squirty bum time.

On the hour and Nicky Hunt joined an exclusive club, that is he got booked without actually kicking a ball, ref Dowd getting fed up of his passing on instructions from the sidelines.
Johnson and Kaboul had switched positions it appeared, and the Frenchman was having a great game as a wide man, leaving Pennant to look on from the bench.

Kanu came on for Nugent after 70 odd minutes and was soon joined by Belhadj as Kranjcar was caught by a late tackle from McCann after the ball had gone, the Croat was stretchered off and didn't look too clever.
Another foray down the right from Kaboul and Pompey had another corner, Belhadj whipped it in near post and the ball nestled nicely in the back off the Fratton end net, who the hell touched it wasn't clear, it may have gone straight in as Belhadj did a lap of honour, Kanu was claiming it, and McCann and Jaaskelainen both looked like they may have poked it home, no matter though, Pompey had the lead they deserved, and the crowd was going wild.
In recent weeks this has been the cue for Pompey to defend on the edge of their 18 yard area, but not today, Crouch fired one of his scissor specials over, and Kaboul almost bulldozed his way through.
Belhadj picked one up in his own half and decided his best option was to stretch his legs and burst all the way into the Bolton box only to fire over with his right boot.
Matt Taylor put a free-kick into Alverstone road with Bolton's last real effort at goal, and as we slipped into 6 minutes of injury time, one of the funniest sights I have seen for a while, Hart and Kidd hed been gesticulating for about 5 minutes for someone to go down so Pennant could come on, with the refs back turned, Hreidarsson collapsed theatrically to the ground as a signal for Kaboul, and the Frenchman dropped to the deck to recieve treatment, quality thespianism.

Pompey were still breaking forward and both Johnson and Kanu had shots beaten away, but the sound we wanted most rang out, and Dowd's whistle sliced the air and Pompey had clinched a great win.

Star Player

Can't decide on this one, Kaboul was like a tank on legs, he gave the left hand side of Bolton a torrid time, he covered more grass than pesticide and really looked the part.
On the other hand you had Sean Davis, he saw more tackles than Jodie Marsh before she turned to the dark side, and we looked so much better with him in the side, split the award on this one.

Nice report, Paul. At half time I was texting that it had been a great first half and I was thinking that Bolton has such a ropey defence and such an innocuous attack that I would be really angry if we didn't beat them - but I have seen that happen so much this year, I couldn't be comfortable. I thought everyone looked hungry for success today, but for me Kaboul was a real star - barging down the wing like a wardrobe on skates and causing real problems. Great to see Belhadj play a crucial part again - I am a real fan. Also there was a LOT of warmth for SuperMatt - some boos yes but he was applauded by the Fratton end when he went over there to take a corner. Charlie Nicholas on Sky Sports claims that Matty was not that worried that his free kick didn't go in during the second half.

Good report Paul. I think Hart MAY have got it right - unbeaten in five. Keeping Kaboul in the side was good decision too he just ran and ran!

Great read, thanks. Can't believe there were some idiots booing Super Matt. Crazy.

I loved the game. Wouldn't like to say who was man of the match. It could have been Kaboul, Davis or Herman. Campbell and Distain are definately back to their old selves and all in all it was a fantastic team effort. Who would have thought, the team we played today scored three goals against Chelsea last week. Come on ManU, bring it on! Would liked to have seen Pennant or Basinas start instead of Mullins.

"didn't look too clever" - brilliant...I thought Bolton were poor today (see Elmander's dive that got Dystain a yellow) and it was a shame to see gardner taken off but we did the business on and off the pitch.

Kaboul was amazing! he just kept on running an it had a reall positive impact on the team. Sean Davis was also brilliant, diving into tackles without any concern for his taped up knee. I thought Paul Hart was also great in going for the in rather than playing it safe and sitting back on the lead. Thought at one stage he might have a heart attack.. somebody please make sure he has a nie relaxing week to come 8) yes, i agree Squee, that was quite disappointing when Matty got booed after his collision with Distin other than that though, the crowd was pretty good.. Bells didnt stop ringin

Kaboul grabbed MOM for me but Davis ean him a close second and Niko has anohter good game before being carried off - Belhadj was in great spirit and looked like the exciting player we saw at the start of the season once again - 100% better than last week but still concerned about our ability to score goals - Still one more win and we will be safe ... Not sure it'll come i the next three games though .. although we could get three draws ... if we are lucky.. Well done Paul Hart but please watch that blood pressure .. Had it have been a night game your face would have shone as bright as a red traffic light !!

For me Kaboul was MOM, but it was a good all round performance, and very happy to have got these 3 points, we're that bit further from danger. It was great to hear Westwood's bell back again - it helps, it really does. Overall a good return for Matty, he ran his socks off, I didn't hear any booing, just well deserved applause, and a round of 'Super Matty Taylor' after he Quashie'd the free-kick.

another classic read paul. bolton were poor werent they, not taking anything away from us tho - altho we werent great ourselves were we, but winning was the main thing. i thought the 1st half was good and we played fairly well. the longer the 2nd half went on the more a 0-0 looked on, and the more it looked like we 'could' settle for that. we certainly deserved the win, and we are 'nearly' safe now...
lets not get spanked at manyoo, but at the same time we have nothing to lose - i think that belhadj could be worth a start as his pace and ability to break could really help? pennant could return, as to be fair defensively he has chipped in, but so long as johnson stays wide - and kaboul, who was fantastic again, is fit - then its them to again on the right for me... kranjcar will miss out, we must bring basinas in, but it will be hughes, davis and mullins - hmmm...
a big, big 3pts yesterday.

ye, 3 points, great result. Hull and Blackburn are taking a noise dive, and the Boro havent got there momentum from last saturday, expect a 10-15th placed position, should be save by Sunderland.

Lot more content now, it would take a catastrophic loss of form to do for us now, Hull are rudderless in a storm and we will get a better idea about Newcstle today against thingys lot

hope Spurs beat them. I like Alan Shearer, but would like to see Newcastle in the Championship, can see them being more of a threat next year with Shearer instead of Sunderland with Ricky as manager

Great report for a great game. Hreidarsson was quite funny, as he was telling the linesman to watch out for Davies' diving he was doing dolphin-like impressions. Some boos for Super Matt coming from near me after he went down and stayed down in the box in the second half, but he just got up, turned round and applauded them (albeit sarcastically). The guy was a legend for Pompey and I wouldn't have begrudged him a goal (but only if we'd had scored 2). Jussi was on top form yesterday - he stopped them from being embarrassed BIG style.

I am feeling a lot safer now, we're not mathematically safe, but it would take some disastrous bad luck now. I'd been looking over my shoulder at the bottom 3, and wondering if either Boro or Newcastle might pull themselves up and get out of it, but its not looking likely that either of them will - Newcastle were dire against Spuds and lucky to get away with 1-0. If one of them did get themselves out of it, then the question is who would be the team to fall in the hole instead - now there's enough clubs below us to go first, so I'm not worrying any more. And we have to give Hart credit for this. As for Newcastle going down, I'll shed no tears. I like Shearer, he's the only one on MOTD who has consistently given Pompey credit where its due, and he was an amazing footballer and England international. But as for the Toon Army, being a 'big club' doesn't give you a divine right to stay in the prem. And I still remember how they tried to poach Sandbanks man as their manager a year or so before he dumped us for spuds. He nearly went, and the FA cup dream would never have happened if he had. Would the Toon Army have had any sympathy for us? You bet your life they wouldn't!

Well said Tracy, I don't like the way Sky seems to think we are going to roll over next week when we play them either. Why on earth should anyone think that anyway?

My tip of 41 pts prior to the West Brom game is still on the cards. One more win and a draw should be enough. I think West Brom, Middlesbrough and Hull will go down. Hull and Middlesbrough's remaining games after definitely the hardest whilst West Brom simply won't have enough points.

It was def a game of 2 halves. The Johnno show in the first half and then a great team performance in the second. I only remember Bolton getting 1 shot on target that looked worrying. Lets hope we can get at least a point from the next two games. I will be able to sleep better then.

Very deserved the win, could have been 3 or 4 up! As pompeygray said I think we need another 4 pts & they may not until the last few games. Needed the win after the awful point with WBA. Touighies coming up. I don't expect much more than a point in the 3 next three games! 2 draws at best, fck all at worst!!
