Boro 1 - Pompey 1

Riverside

14/3/09

Attendance:

How we threw it all away

Pompey did what Pompey do best once more this afternoon, we got in front, ended up against 10 men, then decided we had the best defenders in the World, so sat back and invited the pressure, like a well worn path the rest fell straight to type, Boro pushed on and forced an injury time equaliser, more predictable than an episode of Midsommer murders.

Pompey are masters of their own destiny we are told, well they must have suicidal tendencies, you are 1 up with 10 to go, your opponents are down to 10, what do you do?

Well, Pompey take off a striker, thus taking pressure up top off, Boro could play with 3 at the back, basically ignoring the fact they are a man down, and Pompey invite wave after wave of pressure until the Tsunami washes over them and cleans away the straw huts of a defence on the beach, and with it 2 valuable points.

Pompey went into the match with no surprises, Basinas and Gekas both slipped right off the radar in squad terms though, and Hughes returned to the bench.

Pompey started brighter than a Supernova, movement was good and Boro were on the back foot, Crouch poked wide from a Pennant centre, and Nugent was blocked out brilliantly by Huth just as he was about execute his shot.

Boro were offering little at this stage, Nugent being denied by a post after Crouch laid him off.

On the half hour though and Pompey got some just rewards, Middlesboro' gave away a cheap corner, and then slept as Johnson crossed for crouch to volley home, his duck was broken and Pompey had a priceless lead that their pressure deserved.

The home supporters were making their displeasure well heard, Nugent almost making it worse but headed only straight at Jones when maybe he should of worked him more.

Pennant was done for by now, he limped off to be replaced by Belhadj. Crouch should maybe have added a second on the whistle but he poked wide.

Second half and Pompey had the first effort of note, Kranjcar firing narrowly over from a free-kick, Boro were starting to show a bit more though and the half was much more of a contest.

Crouch had another gilt-edged opportunity when Huth misjudged a punt forward, but as he waited for the ball to sit up comfortably the Kraut got back at him and made up for his error.

On 70 minutes and Pompey made the change which possibly changed the match, they took off Nugent who was being a menace to the Boro defence, and bought on Hughes to bolster midfield. The message was clear, what we have we hold.

Bates then got himself sent off by getting booked trying to earn a penalty, Pompey had the goal and a man advantage now, surely 3 points were within reach?

Crouch had another chance with 10 minutes to go, but under no pressure he fired wide when he should really have put the game beyond doubt.

Pompey were sitting deeper and deeper now though, and Boro were trying to force one in through sheer brute force, and in the second minute of injury time they did just that, a corner turned into a scramble, and King forced home and Pompey's pack of cards collapsed.

Pompey in fact had David James to thank for a least one point, Alves found himself clean through with the fat lady about to burst into life, but Jamo spread himself and blocked the effort, 3 points nearly evaporated into none in the blink of an eye.

Star Player

James gets star man if only for his last minute block.

Manager Rating

Hart and kidd have given Pompey belief, but surely attack is the best form of defence against 10 men, negative tactics can be applied at times, but pompey have thrown away good leads on countless occasions this season by sitting too deep and inviting pressure when in control of the match, think only of Hull, Milan and Wigan.

Opponent Rating

Southgate could probably not believe his luck when we invited his charges to score, they obliged and he got lucky.

Gutted ..Would have settled for a point before the game .. but as usual we sat back (against 10 men) and basically invited them to score .. and guess what they did... Change of mgmt maybe but no change of style or results... keep this up and we WILL go down... We had the chances, the impetus and the initaitve and used neither

Gutted.. and then some. As the seconds were ticking away i just knew it was gonna happen. We could have buried them earlier in the first half. Too many missed chances, this is getting tense. I know i'm sounding negative but i was just starting to taste those three points. With Stoke and Blackburn losing we could have got ourselves a couple of places further up the table.

Pig sick. Defended to deep. 10 men for nearly the whole second half & we hardly hurt them! Niko & Nugent off for Noe & Hughes & we still couldn't defend the lead. To be honest Jamo kept us in it at times. 2 huge points dropped. We should have a 5 point gap on Boro but havn't. It makes the tough home game with Everton n/w even tougher.

Totally devastated. Feels like we lost BUT at least we got one point and are, for the time being, just out of the drop zone. I think I'll spend the rest of the weekend working on my positive thinking!

I reckon McLoughlin should go in and chat to the playing and coaching staff, he was saying from 70 mins onwards that it was coming, listening to the commentary you could just feel the kick in the teeth coming, Pompey really need to realise our strengths are in attack and making the opposition play in their own half, not inviting balls into our box, MOTD has been bloody ruined again!!

Gutted! IŽm surprised any of us have any digestive tract left, this has happened too much. Was quite positive really - the local sports bar here in Lanzagrotty put the match on a small screen for us, next the to the big screen with the Arsenal game. I wanted to get some banter going, and was the only one singing, but to no avail. When boro scored and my head hit the pub table, the nice arsenal-supporting Swedish lady put an arm round my shoulders and said Žits not fairŽ, i could only agree. At least Crouchie got one at last. Oh well, off for some dinner and more watered-down beer, see you all in time for the Everton match. We WILL win that.

Belhadj on the right. Er, what? Did I hear that correctly? so we played TWO players out of possition in Belhadj and Nugent? Nuge has shown he can be effective on that right hand side, and Belhadj can devastste left hand side's deffences. Such a simple tactic, it was screamingly obvious. I actually agree with Paultsmouth, Macca has some very wise words to say. If he can see these mistakes, and he's a radio commentator, then how did Hart and Kidd not see it? We might as well send Gekas back, we're clearly not going to use him. Another Ben Sahar. Hyped up, never used, gets pi$$ed off with the club, goes back with nothing to show for it. Bl00dy hell Pompey, you're testing my patience with you.

I remember a season when pompey went down our right back took a throw in and the keeper missed it and it went in. The God's tell you when it will be doom and gloom. At least we did not lose and we could have. Let us believe in the home games when we have license to attack and then we must score more goals. That is our problem.

Sunday morning and i've got a thick head... self inflicted. I needed a prop after that result. Still I'm trying to take the positives on board now. We didn't lose and we're out of the bottom three. Also we're on 28 games when all around us are on 29. Everton at Fratton is going to go for us....I've got a gut feeling.

We got what we deserved, the chance was there to win and yet agaain we threw it away. Where is Traore, Gekas and Basinas? We only have ourselves to blame if we do go down, we nearly lost a gane against a team that is so inferior with talent, but never gave up when they were a goal down, and a man down. We need to win three of the nxt four to survive. Crap journey home as well, another well past two in the morning job, we must be mad!!PUP please

When we finally did come forward - the last two minutes of the game - we were all over Boro. Crouchie and Davis had set a little something up in the space of seconds, which adminttedly, didn't come off, but they made the set up look oh so easy. Bloody shame. We threw it away.
