Nugent off the mark as Pompey share the spoils

The big day arrived and the fans are waiting in anticipation. The pubs in Portsmouth are packed!! I am in one writing this report.

Tottenham Hotspur - Gomes, Corluka, Woodgate, King, Bale, Lennon, Zokora, O'Hara, Modric, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe. Subs: Alnwick, Bentley, Huddlestone, Bent, Campbell, Taarabt, Dawson.

Pompey - James; Johnson, Campbell, Distin, Belhadj; Kaboul, Davis; Nugent, Kranjcar, A.Traore; Crouch Subs: Begovic, Hreidarsson, Pamarot, Wilson, Little, Utaka, Kanu

The date of 18th of January had been ringed on the calendars of most Pompey fans for some time now and their team did not let them down as they put in a fighting performance on a ground where they usually have no luck. They ended up coming away with a point from a 1-1 draw and with a little luck could have taken all three!

The two managers walked out of the tunnel together into what was already a red hot atmosphere. Pompey kicked off and started brightly with a Traore run that eventually petered out. But after eight minutes a poor square ball from Belhadj let in Defoe whose left foot shot ended in the crowd when he should have scored.

Three minutes later Glen Johnson cut inside and let go a left foot shot which Gomes spilled and just recovered to prevent the onrushing Peter Crouch tap home. Traore was causing the Spurs defence all manner of problems and on seventeen minutes he burst through only to shoot into the side netting.

Spurs then enjoyed a spell of pressure with David James saving well from Aaron Lennon and then brilliantly tipping over a Defoe header from a Lennon cross. Immediately Pompey were back down the other end and Kaboul was thwarted by a great Corluka tackle.

The first booking of the game arrived on twenty seven minutes when Sean Davis brought down Pavlyuchenko. After lengthy treatment the russina was stretchered off to be replaced by Darren Bent. The half progressed with Kaboul having two chances which sandwiched another James save.

With Ledley King clearly limping Spurs appear to have another problem. Then Pompey have a golden chance when David Nugent breaks away on the right and cuts inside and with only the goalkeeper to beat insists on turning onto his right foot and Gomes saves with his left. Replays showed that Traore had made great ground and was placed for a tap in. Immediately after King is replaced by Michael Dawson.

Pompey are defending well but appear to be letting players cut inside and have free shots from the edge of the box. The half ends with Nugent blazing over from a narrow angle.

Half Time - Tottenham Hotspur 0 Pompey 0

During half time the Spurs groundstaff are watering the pitch for some reason, did not seem to need it for me. Both teams had their chances and scores level appears a fair score line.

There are no changes at half time and the second half starts with a long period of midfield exchange with no real opportunities until in the 58th minute Lennon cuts inside and his deflected shot is acrobatically saved by James who is alert and throws the ball to Belhadj. He makes ground down the left before feeding Traore who runs at the Spurs defence. When the challenge eventually comes on the edge of the box he squares to NUGENT who lashes his twenty yard shot off Bale and into the net past Gomes.

It was move of great pace and took just eighteen seconds from James' save to the ball settling in the home team's net. Can Pompey hang on is the question on everybody`s lips. For a while they seem in control and Crouch is unlucky with a header that drifts wide. On 68 minutes Spurs make their final change with Bentley replacing Bale. Bentley's first contribution is to bring down Johnson.

Then on seventy minutes the inevitable happened Defoe takes a square ball from Modric and hits a left foot shot through Campbell`s legs and passed an unsighted James. We fear the worst but Pompey recover and defend well with Krancjar clearing off the line from a Defoe header this time from a corner.

On eighty minutes comes the last and best chance of the game when Bent unmarked and only seven yards out heads a left wing cross wide. Both Distin and Campbell make great defensive tackles and Pompey replace Kaboul with Marc Wilson and Krancjar with Hreidarsson and clock runs down. The final action is when Bent has a shot straight at James after three minutes of time added on.

David James - several great saves and most of all the stop from a deflected shot that ended eighteen seconds later with the ball in the Spurs net.

Well done from a Villa fan. Shame you couldn't keep them bottom, but a draw will do for the rest of us laughing at Spurs!!!

An excellent game and I am delighted with the result. Disappointed that we conceded but they didn't deserve to lose. Spurs always looked like they were going to go on and win once they scored. It was another game that Tony Adams' Portsmouth showed real character and I just hope we can go on and do that against the lesser teams. Delighted for Nugent too, he played well and took his goal brilliantly. Someone has to tell him to keep his head up in a one on one situation though as he could have had a few today.

I was so pleased for Nugent. Hopefuly, he will start to gain confidence now and come good. He certainly gets around the pitch.

Great result today..... had to settle for it on the radio which made it all the more nail biting, but two games on the trot that we have been against it and scored against the run of play, hopefully will make teams a little more cautious of us on the break!

Phew! Although I'd have loved to have held on to the lead and won, this is still a fantastic result. It was always written Defoe would score, so pleased it was an equaliser rather than a winner. And if they'd won, and gone above us, it would have been very hard to take. Fantastic performance, lovely to see the Nugget score, against Jamie's dad in particular, who never gave him a chance. And how good is it to see Jamo back in form again!

Utaka won't leave. No other bugger would pay him the same stupidly high wages for his non-existant workrate. Another reminder of the profligate HR era where we threw money at players to get them here. Really pleased for Nugent. What a game to get his first PL goal. The type of player we need right now. Runs all day, never stops trying. Crouch and Davis too, for that matter.

Hard for me to comment on our win as I was out all day. However, chuffed to nuts with a draw. I have seen the twitchy redknob in an interview. Seeing his peeved face and huge long list of excuses just made my day! Well done boys, esp, Nuggat, Jamo and Sol from what i've read!

Great report Dave. Glad Nuge has got his first prem goal, increases his value if we sell him. Thought it would never come when he missed the sitter in the first half. Why oh why he didn't walk it around the crippled keeper or blast it? Not sure why TA took him off when his confidence was sky high & replace hime with that non entity Ucrapa. Is Niko ok?

A very good result and I am sooooo pleased for Nuge. It really feels like we have turned the corner and I think it is vital we now beat Swansea in the FA Cup to keep the momentum going and give the team confidence ahead of the Villa game. A decent attendance will help so please all get down to Fratton Park if you can and we will cheer the lads to victory!

Good old Nugent! with Nuge on our front line, we will do well. ADAMS: KEEP NUGENT!! He has great pace, and works damn hard. Great game. Look forward to seeing the reaction from Redknapp tonight on MOTD! Sean Davis made me laugh on so many occasions today. Legend!

I was watching at home and taking my blood pressure every ten minutes. It's well scary what watching Pompey does for you. My pulse was over 90 at one point (but I am an unfit slob) TA looked very perky after the game. I bet he has been worrying about this one from the beginning of November.

ANd another thing...that daft Andy Gray kept saying that the best thing about Defoe is that he never gets discouraged or stops trying. WRONGGGG. Try again, Andy, try getting out and watching some more football. Or perhaps be was getting him confused with Crouchy (easily done!!!)

I remember the song at the time: "Andy Gray, Andy Gray, Andy Andy Gray...when he get's the ball he does f-all Andy Andy Gray" Still man of the match for me is Darren Bent for services NOT rendered and for providing those great images of Harry at his twitchingest

(Spurs fan) Well played today lads, despite only being 1-1 it was a cracking game whuch either team could have won or lost with a little luck. Having said that it's easy to see why both side are where they are, we gave the ball away so much you'd have thought it was radioactive, hopefully the rot has been stopped and we can start climbing the table. Good luck for the rest of the season fellas

Nugent! Nugent! Nugent! Shame about Utaka, apart from him every played really really well. Davis gave me a heart attack when he did the dodgy cross field pass straight to Defoe. Wilson was top notch when he came on, and was just a shame that Niko pulled his shot wide, that would have been the perfect end to the match.

we were left lacking in midfield at times. Kranjcar had his best game for...ages... and completelty ran the show untill bentley came on (not becuase bently was good... but becuase bale was rubbish) - anyone know if he was injured? Man of the match, I'm torn between Nugent (great to get his first goal, and could have had more... possibly SHOULD have), Kranjcar (Brilliant game!) and jamo (also brilliant game). Nuge had to come off when he did. Actually, he should have come off 5 mins earlier, he was on the verge of collapsing with exhastion!

just seen 'him' talking on sky sports news where he said: 'jamo is playing with an injury, i think its a knee injury he told me and he could be out for a while'...
even if true, what the ***** has it got to do with him - and why the hell is he making such things like that known, talk about your own poxy players and not ours and everyone else's - he is feeling the pressure so is trying to unsettle everyone else in the hope that things help 'his side'...
i really want to draw a line under 'him' but he cannot help himself, im not giving 'him' the expossure of actually writing an article on him tho... im starting to dispise the swine more and more as the days pass...
