Guimaraes 2 - Pompey 2

Estadio D. Afonso Henriques

2 metre Peter is the man

Pompey overcame a nervy first half to blast through to the group stages of the UEFA cup. To be frank we were worse than awful first half, Guimaraes wipee the lead ou within half an hour and things looked grim, danger man Douglas scored the first, and Alves scored a long range daisy cutter for the second.

Half time couldn't come quick enough, 3-5-2 was more like 8-2 most of the half, Pompey were playing deeper than the squid like to roam. Harry obviously righted a few wrongs in the break, as we came out with the same team, but now Traore and Johnson were bombing forward at every opportunity, for all our possesion though Nilsson was not really seriously tested.

Extra-time was when it all came good, or rather the little break before it started, the cameras panned round and every Guimaraes player looked out on his feet, Pompey went for the throat.
The glory went to our one to watch from the preview, Crouch first scored a trademark nod in from a great Johnson cross, and then buried a beauty after a fantastic run by Belhadj.

Job done.

Star Player

Crouch, scored 2 and played generally well, even first half when we were crap.

You guys don't know how lucky you are. If Peter Crouch was playing for Manchester City right now he would be a god. We would have bought him if we had the money in time. You got him... but expect us to come back for him some time soon.

seriously we werent very good at all! im so relieved. their first goal was such a handball! second goal was a fluke. our first was lucky cos of bad defending, and for the second belhadj did amazing - wasnt exactly a bad finish though!lets hope that the extra 30 mins doesnt effect us too much vs stoke. anyone know why utaka didnt make the bench? he passed a fitness test and was originally named in the starting line-up!

absolutely chuffed, I woke up at 6 this morning Bangkok time, and the game was still in extra time, got on the bbc website just in time for the text to go in saying that Crouchie had scored. What a great result and the result is all that matters.

Great result in the end, although think Harry's tactics/formation were way off the mark in the first half.

Every emotion experienced last night, after 30 minutes I thought it was al going to be over by half time and we'd end up on the end of another 6-0 drubbing as we were truly awful but as we got into our stride in the second half there was only gonna be one winner ... we just had to win it.. Glad Rodney scored it'll do him the world of good and take some pressure off of Defoe. ...and what a atmosphere from the lads and lassies out there... they did us proud.. and I bet they party all night

A good result in the end but we were worse than dreadful in the first half. I have never seen Sol Campbell play a worse game than that in my life! It was lucky that half time came and we were not dead and burried, but hey ho that is how football goes. Just wish we didn't have to do things the hard way as I am no knackered and have a stinking hangover.

Good to see Portsmouth progress - always nice to see an English team do well in Europe. I didn't think that you would do so after a poor first half performance, so well done.

It's a game of 2 halves, 2 2/3rds in this one, I liked the 2/3rds best.

I just knew when we went into extra time, that maybe we could do something, as Guimarres were really tired by then. I thought it was fantastic, a real rollercoaster of a game

got back this afternoon - what an adventure! 1st half we were awful, 2nd alot better but still looked suspect, but much better. extra time we had the assistant to thank and jamo for at least a couple of saves before crouchy struck not once, but twice to leave us exstatic! and i was there :-)

Just got out of bed, after a long, long night. The experience was fantastic, we were an inspiration to the team werent we. If anyone is contemplating a trip to Europe with Pompey my advice is GO, you will not regret it honest. It was like a massive party from the moment we arrived at Stanstead until we got home to Liverpool and Warrington, and i reckon we did our reputation no harm at all. Belhadj has to be signed, what a prospect, and Glen Johnson was brilliant. Any more of those tour tee-shirts available, as we did see a few at the game. What a night, was i dreaming, did we do it? Play up Pompey

Not long back home after my trip to see the game. Too knackered to repeat all you already know. However as a fan of over 30 years & having seen Pomey in 4 divisions home & away, this game was special. Another Pompey rollercoaster of emotions with a happy ending.

btw " Sinbad ", the only reason Citeh is even in this competition is because of some bogus " Fair Play " berth so I don't think we need any lectures about not knowing "how lucky we are". Also, rich owners come and go so I wouldn't start planning your trip to a Champions League game anytime soon.

Well said Toronto,Sinbad Crouch was only ever comming to Pompey Citeh never even considered, & just because you have piles of cash does not give you the right to think you can have what you want. so show a little respect.

I suppose they wouldn't be Pompey if they didn't put us through it. As for the second goal we conceded, what was that? Felt quite low at half time, shades of Citeh. And Nodster, yes we really did go loopy when Crouchy scored, it was a phenomenal moment! Thought Diarra had a dreadful game though, what was up with him?
