Spurs 2 - Pompey 0

White Hart Lane

Spurs 2-0 Pompey

The first of 2 visits to the capital in a matter of weeks saw us off to White Hart Lane today to face Spurs. We were on a good run of form having won our previous 3 league and cup games but we have not had a good record against Spurs at White Hart Lane, and this carried on with an eventual 2-0 defeat.

Harry Redknapp was forced into several changes as Sulley Muntari and Papa Bouba Diop were both suspended and Jermain Defoe was ineligible. Lauren missed out through illness and Lassana Diarra picked up a slight knock in training, whereas Milan Baros dropped to the bench.

In came Lucien Aubey, Richard Hughes, Pedro Mendes, Sean Davis, John Utaka and Kanu with Dave Nugent returning to the bench after injury being joined by youngster Marc Wilson, who featured on the bench against Sunderland earlier in the season.

After holding out for 80 minutes we finally succumbed to goals from Darren Bent and Jamie O'Hara.

The Match
Most of the early possession was with Spurs and the first chance came after a quickly taken free kick, which we managed to scramble away with Pascal Chimbonda lurking, with David James shortly pressed into the games first save from Robbie Keane.

We almost conceded when James nearly carried the ball out of the area, he then dropped it to kick it when Keane - who had been lurking off the pitch - almost nicked it off him.

A quick break, with a long James kick was collected by John Utaka who passed to Sean Davis who tried to chip Paul Robinson but he recovered well to tip the effort over the bar.

Chimbonda went close again, this time getting an effort on goal, his volley from the edge of the area was inches wide with James beaten.

30 minutes in and Dimitar Berbatov had the ball in the net after being played in by Keane but he was offside so this was ruled out.

We should have had an attacking throw in but it was given to Spurs, who then broke to win a corner. From this corner Michael Dawson thundered an effort against the bar, with Tom Huddlestone also going close before the break.

It was a decent opening to the 2nd half, but in the first 15-20 minutes of the half there were no real clear cut efforts, although Spurs had a few half chances, we then had a really good chance to possible do something as a break involving 4 players was wasted with Kanu giving the ball away.

The best chance of the game did fall to Kanu in the final 15 minutes as he got clear from a through ball to head over Robinson who came out to meet him, but his header lacked conviction and Didier Zokora got back to clear the danger - had Kanu gone in 100% committed he would have scored but he seemed worried about being clattered by Robinson.

Shortly after his arrival Darren Bent succeeded where Kanu failed, his header saw James beaten and Spurs were ahead. A little over a minute later fellow sub Jamie O'Hara wrapped up the 3 points, Bent broke to pull the ball back and the arriving midfielder made no mistake.

Harry Redknapp made his first chance of the game immediately after this as Milan Baros came on for Kanu - a move that happened some 20 minutes too late for me, as I reckon had we brought Baros on sooner we might have won this game. Arnold Mvuemba also got on in the last minute, replacing Richard Hughes.

Match Summary
It was a decent fairly open game, but I think it is fair to say that Spurs won deservingly so. The win also meant they achieved the double over us.

Had we offered a little more offensively and not gave the ball away as cheaply as we did once again - as we have been doing a lot recently we could have won this - getting Milan Baros on sooner would have also made a difference for me.

We came for a 0-0 & at hoped to nick it on the break. Never looked like winning but we almost got a draw. The loss of 5 first team starters for any team is hard to legislate for. We move on.

Think you did deserve the win given the play lilywhite but always thought we might nick it but hey given our team on the day I think we expected to lose.. Spurs look full of goals and with Ramos in charge you must be looking forward to next season.. a refreshing post from a Spurs fan ......3.....4......

Pompey's game is about soaking up the pressure and hitting on the break and it could have happened today with some luck but we never get much of that at the Lane. No complaints as Matt says we move on.

We looked dangerous in spells in the second half but didn't make anything of them. We had nothing radical on the bench to change things up and therefore lost out to Spurs' strength and depth on the day. Could have been a different story but I won't be moaning about that result.

I thought we were going to hang on for a point, never mind, the lads who came in did their best, i reckon that Aubey will be worth a punt. Long journey home tonight due to the bloody M6, never mind we will soon be having the day at Wembley. Good noisy turnout today well done everyone, although most of the talk seemed to be about the hassle we have had getting our tickets from Ticketmaster.

Thought we got what we deserved with no endeavour up front, Utaka was awfull first half, but only bad second half, slight improvement. Why was Kanu on till 82nd min??

I thought overall it was a pretty good effort, given who was missing. Couple of complaints though. Utaka, who was acquired for his blinding pace, looked again like an aligator after a heavy meal. He's just not panning out and it's a pity. As pompey4me says, why was Kanu on until the 82nd minute and why did HR warm up Baros only to sit him back down again ? (at the risk of sounding like an Arry basher, another game where, from my armchair at least, a bit more tactical astuteness good have nicked 3, or at the least 1 point). Luckily, Everton only got one point so 5th is not impossible still, if looking more and more insurmountable.

...and Real Deal, I'd figure out who you're getting to replace Berbatov next season before you start making those kind of predictions mate. Every top club in europe will be pawing him at season's end. Pity though, cos he and Keane make a formidable pairing.

Tottenham will do better no doubt about that but should we win the FA Cup we will also strengthen enough to keep up with Everton, Spurs, City and Villa.

we werent bad, but werent overly great - 6 changes will do this to wont it... that said i thought those that came in did ok and had we kept our concentration alittle better we could have got a 0-0 draw, and had 'arry made a change earlier could have even won it, i think the fella made a balls up by not getting kanu off sooner tbh...
as for next season, without doubt spurs will do better but thoughts that they will finish above us could be slightly premature, we will also improve this summer, as will plenty of other clubs - all of which can only be good for the premier league all being well.

Tronto4Pompey if you have 30 million maybe you guys could try with a bid but he wants CL footy so guess not. I am sure we will sell you some off our dead wood as it seems to be the trend. Harry was drooling over the Spurs talent before the game, You can have Lee, Gardner, Zokora, Rocha or Chimbonda...LOL!

T4P, that remains to be seen doesn't it. Win win situation for us. If he stays we keep one of the best strikers in europe if he goes we get a huge transfer fee to strengthen other areas. Plus Ramos is no mug so im sure he will get in a very good replacement if needs be..

Berbatov is a class act fellas and I think that if he goes he'll demand a hgh fee (not sure about 30m though) The problem you will have is replacing him... Who is out there that is as good or can play so well with Keane,,,

I was there yesterday, and me and a mate were saying with half hour to go that the game was there to be won, where we lacked was desire to get in the box, it said a lot that Mendes was going in for headers with Robinson, and Davis produced the shot of the match from the edge of the box. Defoes' loss was a big one, but why did Kanu stay on the pitch? I'm not a Kanu knocker, but we could of played without him and not noticed yesterday, I truly believe he is quality, but for 20 mins best served up at the end of the match when defenders are tiring. Utaka could be world class if he had the desire, at times he was breaking up the wing and stopped dead, he has pace in bucketfuls so why not run the defenders like he can do?

Berbatov to City for 32 million, that would show a lack of ambition by him, although Benjy would probably become available!!

Martins considers himself big time, and will never come to Fratton, he is another who would rather be a squad player at one of the bigger clubs than playing every week for the likes of us. He would be a great signing but it will never happen, and i hope that Saturdays game proves to everyone that Lennon is a waste of money, his crossing was awful, and he left Hutton exposed time after time as he does not want to track back and defend.
