Preston 0 - Pompey 1

Sun 17-02-08, 4pm

Preston 0-1 Pompey

The cup dream was given even more life when Liverpool and Arsenal both bowed out yesterday, today we had to overcome Preston to ensure we moved into the quarter finals and one game away from the 1st of hopefully 2 trips to Wembley - the semi finals are also played at Wembley again this season. The dream is still alive after a lucky 1-0 win...

Glen Johnson returned in place of Lauren - who dropped to the bench, and with Noe Pamarot injured Sylvain Distin returned. Hermann Hreidarsson retained his place, so Lucien Aubey had to be content with a place on the bench. Richard Hughes also dropped to the bench as Sulley Muntari made his return after the African nations. Milan Baros was another to drop to the bench and Jermain Defoe was cup-tied so in came John Utaka and Kanu. Sadly Dave Nugent was not fit enough for a place on the bench against his former side.

With a replay looking nailed on, and only after a David James penalty save Darren Carter scored a 3rd minute of injury time winning own goal for us.

The Match
Preston started brightly but it was a quick Pompey break that brought the first real chance. Kanu played the ball through and John Utaka got away but could not find the end product, when the ball came back to him he put the effort over the bar.

The opening 20 minutes were decent, we were comfortable enough and were not really being threatened however we did not work the keeper at all but we were playing some nice football with Kanu holding up the ball well, but he was not quite getting the runners he was looking for. The problem we were having though, with Kanu and his lack of mobility when a quality ball was coming into the area with him as the lone man we were not getting anyone in the box...

Just before the half hour mark Niko Kranjcar ghosted in to beat the offside trap but his flicked header lacked the power needed and Andy Lonergan safely claimed it without any real difficulties.

Lonergan was forced into a save with around 10 minutes of the half to play though when Sulley Muntari struck a free kick, which he turned round the post for a corner. From this corner the pressure remained with a Sol Campbell header and a Kanu shot but neither made it through to the target.

We were upping the pressure and in the 10 minute period leading up to half time it seemed only a matter of time before we did score, with Hermann Hreidarsson breaking forward from the back but he could only find the side netting - the goal did not come before half time but I would have expected Harry Redknapp to have been fairly content...

We started the 2nd half very brightly and looked even more threatening than we had at the end of the 1st - one move, started when Lassana Diarra broke up the play on the edge of his area eventually saw Papa Bouba Diop put a fantastic ball across the area but with no support up front there was no one to get on the end.

Another good break saw Glen Johnson one of several attacking but his shot was straight at the keeper, but then Preston had an effort of their own as Paul McKenna tried his luck from distance but David James was not troubled.

On the hour a stonewall penalty gave Preston a great chance to take the lead on the hour after a Sylvain Distin foul. Simon Whaley stepped up but James guessed the right way to make the save.

They kept the pressure on and he had to save again from Chris Brown soon after, then a fine move saw Darren Carter get through but his finish was tame - Preston were looking nailed on to score sooner or later now...

As the game moved towards the final 15 minutes James again had to be at his very best to make a fantastic save from Neil Mellor. At full stretch he turned it away for a corner.

Redknapp then made his first change, off went Muntari on came Milan Baros, but then Preston went close again through Chris Sedgwick - his effort just going over the bar.

As Preston carried on pouring forward it was giving us chances to break but the final pass was not there, or the shot not threatening enough with Baros probably guilty a couple of times of not getting his head up quick enough.

The final minute saw Kanu play Baros through but there was just too much on it, but still Preston threatened with us guilty of continuously giving the ball away.

The final minute of injury time saw us scrape through... After winning a corner Carter could only smash the ball into his own net when he tried to clear it.

Match Summary
What can you say, I do not think that we deserved to win at all, but I do not also think we deserved to lose... Preston were very unlucky not to have got a draw though - but when your luck is in your luck is in. Today was another case - like last week - of what happens if chances are not taken...

What have I been saying for the past 24 hours fellas, 'our name is on the cup'...

Chelseaforever... I hope somebody (don't care who) knocks both you and Man Utd out of the cup... The final last year bored the pants off of most football fans across the globe... I'm no saying the Pompey you saw today were that much better but another 4 big final will just devalue the cup once again.. it Pompey don't make it I hope it's Bristol Rovers v Cardiff !!

Well.. congrats all, we won depite Muntari and Distin having a bad day and Lassie being anonymous for long periods - Krunchy was annoying, all flips and drags and generally we looked as if we were playing the cursed 39th match in 40 degree heat in HK... yep we won but unless our form generally steps up a couple of gears I don't expect us to progress further unless we manage to avoid WBA, Boro or the big two.

Man U v Pompey (The nightmare is over I have just woke up). That is the only prognosis that scares me, anybody else we can take on. At least the scummers are not lurking there anymore.

Unfortunately there was no TV coverage of the game in Australia. With only 2 games played on Sunday why can't ESPN cover both games? Whenever I listen to radio coverage and then see a TV replay I think its a different game so I never bother with the radio anymore. Judging by the reports the game against PNE and Bolton were similar in that we played badly and still came up with a lucky win in both. How much longer can our luck hold out? Pompey have played as many, if not more, poor games as good games and come away with a point or more. We have also played some top notch games and had varying outcomes. We have been lucky that the teams around us have also been as inconsistant. Had they shown better consistancy we would have been much closer to the relegation zone. Luck has been with us but as any gambler will tell you a lucky streak ends (after the FA cup final I hope). We have good talented players, players with goalscoring records and top class defenders. However, with the exception of David James who has been our "luck" in himself, no one has really put it all together week after week. WHY? Do we not practice pin point and one touch passing for hours on end in the manner of Chelsea and Man U? Do we not practice playing as a team instead of playing as a defence, a midfield and an attack each of which doesn't seem to have much idea of what the rest of the team is doing? Don't we practice running off the ball.? Time after time players are standing and watching when they should be moving into position. Don't we practice moves when we have the ball, particularly in attack? I am sure all of these things ARE practiced though to what degree I sometimes wonder. Why can't we consistantly put it all together? The manager is the one person responsible for this aspect of the game. HR may be good at getting players to join the club and good in a number of other aspects but this is an area I think he needs to look at closely for when we don't have the luck or David James has an off day.

I know this is highly improbable and although several posts have been made re the UEFA qulifying rules; can anyone clarify the situation if the FA cup winner is not an EPL club. Does a championship or league 1 team still get automatic qualification? If not how does the spot get allocated?

Chelsea4ever, everyone wanted that final? Trust me neutrals always want someone different to win the cup, never the same old 4 teams, on the day we were second best, bit like Plymouth and Ipswich, but we are still there, black masks, stripey jumpers and swag bags intact

No need for a torch, eh Paul? All our robberies are in broad daylight. Long may they continue. Except for Manure away, I would fancy our chances on winning the next game as well. Middlesboro/Sheff U at home would be my pick.

as far as im aware frattonaussie whoever wins the fa cup gets the spot no matter what league they are in... when united beat millwall the other year as united were already in a european place millwall took up the uefa cup place - so whoever wins, from whatever league gets the european place, if they are already in the runner-up again from whatever league gets the spot, if the runner up is already in its the next highest in the premier league isnt it?

I cannot add to what frattonaussie has already said, we are playing rubbish and in may cases getting away with it. We have not performed for months and yet the press still talk of the lovely football "HR" inspires. I do not understand it.

For this reason only, i really think we will meet Cardiff in the next round, They have a simular shirt to our great escape shirt...I Hate the colour yellow i reallly do, and can not see the sence in introducing to our kit. i was so fed up with hearing the whinging scousers and their glory hunting plastic adoptees bemoaning a manager who has won so many trophys for them

Not very sturdy at the back, not particularly inspiring up front. i left the plymouth game a bit dispondent despite the fact we won and little seems to have changed. Don't get me wrong i love it when we win, but deep down i know if we keep playing like this we're not going to wembley or gonna secure a European spot. I'm sure HR will sort it ..... soon.
