Pompey vs. Chelski

Sat 02-02-08

Pompey v Chelski

Our first major challenge of the new year at Fratton comes against Chelsea today - can we finally kick start our home form at Fratton, which will be crucial to our chances of making Europe this season...

Vital Quotes:

In all fairness we have not been good for sometime, but although it was United and little would have been expected we were poor - overall - against them, so if nothing else we need to see an improvement in home form.

With all due respect to Derby and Plymouth we should have beaten them, as we did - but this will be a real test, and if we can stand toe to toe with a much strong team in Chelsea this could give us an indication of how our season might pan out?

Pompey Team News:

Defoe will almost certainly make his Pompey debut, but who he starts alongside - if anyone remains to be seen? Baros would seem most likely as with Benjani not finding out until next week if he is still officially a Pompey player, he is unlikely to play a part even though he is being reported as being in the squad.

Distin (hamstring) is likely to miss out so Hreidarsson will probably play alongside Campbell. Bouba Diop is back after Senegal crashed out of the African nations so he might play a part? I would think Mendes will return after missing out in the week, but very much doubt Lauren will after another dismal performance.

Player to watch: Defoe

Diarra will be looking to impress his old side, but who else would I pick after he finally signed - besides I am a 'defoeist'...

Chelski Team News:

Terry (broken foot), Shevchenko (back) and Carvalho (suspension) are all going to be missing for Chelsea, but they have plenty that could fill in, with Ivanovic likely to make his debut.

Lampard (thigh) could be fit to take a place on the bench.

Player to watch: Ballack

The German has had his knockers but I think the fella seems to be finding some form after a long injury lay off.

Match Facts & Stats

We have only scored once in our previous 9 premier league meetings with Chelsea, and even that came in a defeat, and Chelsea come here looking for a club record 10th straight win in all competitions so it will not be any easier.

In all meetings at Fratton we have a 13-12 aggregate lead, with 9 draws, however it is more than 50 years and 21 league games since a win over Chelsea at Fratton, this being a 3-0 win in 1957.

Ref Watch:

There will be a web at Fratton this weekend, but it will not be the web of 'Spiderman' Jonas Gutierrez, this will be Howard Webb.

Match Prediction:

We are owed something from Chelsea; we were mugged at Stamford Bridge so it must be payback time... what do you think? Place your bets here.

Next Fixture:

Matty Taylor's Bolton at the Reebok next Saturday.

If ever we needed a helping hand against Chelsea it is now ... and with No Terry, Shevchenko, Carvalho & Lampard or Essien or Drogba I think we may just have it ....... But my worry is that they have Anelka and we don't have Distin... Are Sol and Hermann (or Pamarot) quick enough to cope with him .... NO !..... Who can keep Joe Cole quiet ... Mendes ?... Davis ?... Hughes ?... Chelsea are going to score a couple I'm sure.. but it's whether we can score too. Defoe will play alongside Baros.... and with Terry & Carvalho they are no doubt weakened.... So if we can supply the front two we have a chance .. Diarra can do this I'm sure.... I can see a 3-2 thriller I'm just not sure which way... Chelsea have won by the odd goal in their last four way games and were lucky against Fulham & Everton ... but then Pompey conceded early against Derby, Plymouth & Man Ure... Ummm ... I'm going be optimistic and go 3-2 Pompey... With Defoe, Baros and .... Hermann to score

Even without so many of their star players they still Cech, Cole, SWP & Anelka. No Distin to counter Anelka's pace is a shame. Maybe Sol can have motorbike on the sidelines. I still think a draw will be a good result. We were awful at OT & even Plymouuth & Derby at times mad us look very ordinary. Heart goes for a draw but the head says it will go the same way as the previous NINE games. Away win.

Agreed Storage, in truth we have been awful all through December and Jan, it's only the poor form of those around us that we havent lost more ground than we have. Here's a bet for you all out there, I bet Spuds will finish higher than us come May. they are now looking like the team they always promised to be in the summer. That will really be a bench mark for us considering how many points we had over them at the end of November

Having been totally crap with my predictions I see no reason to be less crap now so 2-0 to Pompski or is that La Pompey (he is Franco Ruskie, isn't he?) This is the beginning of the final assault on the Euro spots and Milan 'The Panza' Baros and Germo 'The Sniper' Defoe with possible support from Benji 'The Zulu' Maru - whatever, will overrun the Northern opposition of apprentices. Play up Pompey, the bells will be back by October ready for the Euro matches. Pass the next bottle, hick.

I agree, Gleams, I'm really excited about this match - and I'm glad it's Chelsea, so then if we win it will mean so much more.

as said we have been poor for sometime now - lets not gloss over this - and we cannot get carried away by the last 2 home wins, they were games we should have won, and we did but we were not convincing. today is a good chance for us to stand up and be counted and say 'enough is enough' if we mean business we have to show it... granted defeat wouldn't exactly be the worst thing in the world but why should we expect this even against chelski? if we play well and lose i will accept this more, if we are crap again and still lose then that is when i dont... all in all tho i have a really good feeling about today and i too cant wait for defoe to get a game.

Congrats Defoe, seems like it was the right thing to do for him to move from the Spuds, since he wasn´t good enough to get any games there, maybe he will get some games now.
