Pompey nil vs. Derby

Pompey v Derby

The transfer merryground is spinning nicely, some faces have arrived and some departed, but the drought still lingers.

Vital Quotes:

Pompeys drought now rivals the one from 1975, in fact Bob Geldof has organised a benefit gig to aid the Pompey fans in their time of need.
Seriously if we can't score against a Derby side with more leaks than Max Boyces' back garden, we may as well call it a day.

Pompey nil Team News:

Diarra should step straight into the breech against the Rams, Richard Hughes looks most likely to slip to the bench along with Mvuemba who may not feature at all. Glen Johnson looks like making a welcome return at right-back, so Redknapp heas the dilemma of which other full back to drop, Pamarot went missing more tham once at Sunderland, but he could switch to the left with Hermann dipping out. Sean Davis apparently has an outside chance of featuring, but as his last appearance was on December 15th, will be short of match fitness and will probably make the bench at best. If we stick with 4-4-2 Nugent should get another chance alongside Benjani.

Player to watch: Nugent

Was starved of any real service at Sunderland, but knows he must start finding the net soon, he has looked good against the lower division clubs in the cups, maybe a struggling Derby could be the place for him to start a scoring streak. If not his place will be in doubt once more.

Derby Team News:

Top scorer Miller is a major doubt, his groin injury kept him out at Wigan, and he is drowning in his efforts to make this one.
Claude Davis is suspended (shame) so big Bruno himself will make a welcome return to Fratton, no doubt in XXXL shorts.
Lauren Robert will face the boo-boys, the original LeSulk returns to Fratton for the first time, he has quality in his left boot however, its just if he can be bothered to motivate it.

Player to watch: Barnes

Giles Barnes is undoubted quality, he is over his injury problems now and will be out to prove that if Derby drop down, that he deserves to stay in the top flight.

Match Facts & Stats

2-2 on the opening day last time we met, but one of the goalscorers for Pompey that day is a couple of continents away, so step forward a new hero please, in fact step forward anyone!

Ref Watch:

Mike Dean

Match Prediction:

Last time we met at Fratton was a 6-2 treat if I recall, but a scrappy 1-0 win wouldn't go amiss either, Derby are not down and out yet and will scrap for everything, place you guesses here.

Next Fixtures:

Plymouth in the cup next week, and then 3pts at Old Trafford

Got to win this one surely?
paultsmouth
If we dont then serious action would have to be contemplated surely?
Owenspompey
simply got to score!!!
pompeycarpet
No I agree Paul 1-0 own goal!!
eastneydave
...Robert to put one in his own net
Toronto4Pompey
Go for the throat early & snuff any hope this relegated ****e have of getting anything. A word of caution, Charlton at home last season, similar time, similar postions, similar weather conditions, let's fckin hope not a simlar score. Sadly Lawro has tipped us to win.
storagematt
uh oh, this CANT be good then
pompeycarpet
...and Lawro got 4 results out of 10 right last week !
Toronto4Pompey
new signing to do the buisness, freekick by aubey!
Gleams
I'm considering not going… oodles of Uni work to do but I know we'll end up winning. So I think I'll suffer the misery instead - I'll be there. Ghaly hattrick and a Nugent own goal... 4-0 Derby. Funnier things have happened this year.
stillthewhizz
and another few teeth knocked out?
Gleams
Yeah why not. But it's from Noe in the stands this time as Audrey Harrison gets his debut. Can I just throw an old name into the transfer hat? (Not as if Harry reads this) Jefferson Farfan. That knob Koeman has gone, his form has dipped and his stock must be lower now. The boy has obvious talent and as I always say; Harry knows how to get the best out of players. On top form he is as prolific as anyone.
stillthewhizz
Given all this " one man in, one man out " business lately, I have the uncanny feeling that this (or the cup tie with Plymouth) might be the Nuge's last chance to impress, so GO NUGGET GO !
Toronto4Pompey
"Taxi for McNugget"
stillthewhizz
dont think he will leave...but this "onw in one out" business is certainly suggesting we wont be spending much isnt it!
pompeycarpet
Matt, that charlton game heralded the first of my vitalpompey rants, that type of performance cant happen again!
pompey4me
We have a habit of struggling against the strugglers, remember Watford as well, not to mention Wolves, Charlton, Sunderland, Birmingham 2006....I said NOT to mention them !!
pompeygray
Like the Pompey Nil at the top - sooner or later we have to score at home though so why not today 4-1 I say.
pompeygray
im seriously considered writing an article stating that if we didnt win this gmae i would quit as 'the landlord' of vital pompey... this site means the world to me so that is how confident i was of 3pts and how much i think if we cant win something is wrong... however despite a beer fuelled evening i saw the light and thought i couldnt risk doing that - for 1 i worried i might not happen and for another its a ridiculous thing to do anyway :-)
pompeyrug
I want to see something from Kranjcar and Diarra tonight. And dont worry, Benjani and Nugent will both score
ausoccer
Most of you are so pessimistic. It's not all doom and gloom even if we lose. Have faith in your team and the Indians are not having it all their own way in the cricket either. The new striker will come- trust Harry. I always do...lol. Anyway Nugent will come good today, so forget the striker and get a decent true left winger.
frattonaussie
Spot on ausoccer - That's my prediction too 2-0 to Pompey it'll be a scrappy affair but we'll come out on top and break this home goal hoodoo once and for all - COME ON YOU BLUES...
Chix
Whatevere we do today can we back Harry. Let's sing his name, plenty of support for the team, bring back the Pompey roar & blow these rams away. I thank you.
storagematt
frattonaussie, oops!the Indians come good
paultsmouth
dooom, glooom and misery - that is the wy we are heading, and as we always fail in tse few months, i reckon it will be...you guesssed ...a 0-0 draw - AGAIN!!!!
pompeycarpet
Paultsmouth:we have to let them win sometimes otherwise we are called for racism. I just cut and pasted pompeygreys post to me: We are on the up frattonaussie, things are looking good, don't be so pessimistic. On a positive note India are looking good in the Cricket ? MMm from someone who also posts:We have a habit of struggling against the strugglers, remember Watford as well, not to mention Wolves, Charlton, Sunderland, Birmingham 2006....I said NOT to mention them !! A bit pessimistic don't you think. Anyway we will win so it doesn't matter. Um, did England qualify for Euro 2008? Maybe India can teach you lot how to play football.
frattonaussie
Now theres a proper Aussie! Them boys hate losing and take umbridge at any digs! You colonials are all the same, anyway our cricket team are worse than the football team (just about)
paultsmouth
i think that on talent - and on any football pc game, the england team are better than the england rugby team...its jst a shame they suck in real life isnt it!
pompeycarpet
looks like it COULD be 4-4-2, diara starting, but no campbel!
pompeycarpet
but thats the worst possible start...or maybe its agood start - as it should provide some incentive to attack?
pompeycarpet
1/2 time score line is the same as it was last time we scorred...can we get a repeat performance?
pompeycarpet
well a another hat-trick from Benj, close enough?
paultsmouth
