Cats v Harry's Pompey

Pompey are basking in the news that manager Harry Redknapp will remain, so here's to the away form remaining also.

Vital Quotes:

The dust has settled on a traumatic week if you are a Pompey fan, but the end product has been worth it, our manager has decided we can still progress, the aim is still Europe, now its time for the players to do the talking on the pitch. Results have pushed Pompey a little further away from the Euro spots tonight, so we need a result just to hang onto the coat-tails.

Sunderland Team News:

Dwight Yorke has completed his suspension and is available, Kenwyne Jones is rated 50-50 with aknock to the knee.
Manager Keane will be hoping Chopra, Higginbotham and Wallace will also be up for selection.

Player to watch: Jones (if-fit)

The man who used to play up the road has settled comfortably into the Premiership, he has proved a handful for some top defenders so far and Distin and Campbell can expect the same.

Pompey Team News:

Well the African quartet will be missing, how much we will miss them is to be seen, but to be honest Utaka and Kanu have been absent for the last month!
Richard Hughes is fit again as is Mendes, Sean Davis is another who is very close, so the midfield may not be as weak as first feared, this is backed up with the encouraging performance of Mvuemba at Ipswich.
Up front Nugent has forced himself back into contention, if Harry plays one up front though I expect him to dip out again with Benjani being that man, 2 up front and who else is there!

Player to watch: Nugent

Got a goal last week, and turned the game to be honest, his make or break period has come, I'm going to back him to find the goals.

Match Facts & Stats

4-1 cack in '93 is a date that will stick in Pompey minds, a result that kept Pompey out of the top flight for a further 10 years.
This will be the first time we have met Roy Keanes Sunderland though, and it is yet to be seen how we will fare.

Ref Watch:

Our old mate Chris Foy

Match Prediction:

Redknapps prospective suitors lost 6-0, can we further hammer home the fact he has made the right decision? Hedge a bet here.

Pompey should be playing with a spring in their heels, I'm going for another away win

Had I had time to write Previous Encounters this week I would have highlighted 1993s sad defeat. It is not a lucky place for Pompey. This will be our 47th visit to Wearside and we have won on only eight occasions. In the previous 46 games Sunderland have averaged more than two goals a game. Normal service of Previous games will continue next week - sorry to those who enjoyed them.

Ah, but this has been a season to bury hoodoos, the North East had no recent good memories, until Newcastle away of course!
paultsmouth
with the 4 teas above us all on equal points, the rae, not only for europe - but champions league could still be on. and the players, sburred on by the fact that harry redknapp has made the clearest of clear statements that we can do it - we WILL do it (well, most of it)
pompeycarpet
away win for me!
merlin
w are better than u! u will not finish above us! n i'm goin 4 a sunderland 3-2 win! Martin oneil is soooooooooo much better than Redknapp
villavillavilla
I reckon Sunderland will be pretty solid but I fancy us nicking it 1-0. We need a win to stay with the chasing European pack. PUHP.
stillthewhizz
thanks for that villavillavilla...so sorry, but i cant remember th score when we played you...must have slipped my mind - but im pretty sure we WON at villa park...REMEMBER?. anyway, sunderland view this as a potential turning point in there season. this is bad news for us.
pompeycarpet
We will be on fire after the last 48 hours; 3 points for us
UKTony
If Kenwyne Jones is out you would really fancy we could turn them over, but he is a handful and will need close watching by Sol and Sylvain. I really think we can get something if we believe in ourselves again.
Owenspompey
Time to give these Nothern ******** a good seeing too. 3pts to celebrate the keeping of our 'Arry.
storagematt
Sorry about villavillavilla. He is probably too young to remember when Villa were a great side, and has got a bit over excited. I think he is trying to say good luck for the rest of the season, and may the best team win!!!!!
CLVilla
CLVilla thanks for posting i had began to worry about the state of grammar in the Midlands

what we now need is that famous new old manager bounce that we had once before. I thonk providing Jones doesn't play we will win well. Remember Mendes is still regarded as one of the class midfield players of the premiership and Mvuemba will cope against the macams. I figure we will start with Benji 1st half, but i think harry will want to play Nugent early into the second half whilst he is still confident
russellm
anybody else thonk along the same lines or am i drunk on champers again
russellm
Can't wait to watch this, I really hope Mvuemba and Nugent start. Unlikely though. In other news - I've just been searching for a bit of info on the D'Alessandro situation and it looks as though River Plate and San Lorenzo had moves rebuffed from Zaragoza after Pablo Aimar picked up a long term injury and Andres played really well on his comeback. So a loan for him looks extremely unlikely.
stillthewhizz
russellm - i thonk along the same lines... doubt nugent will start, but will cme on early in the second half to get hos hatrick.
pompeycarpet
I've a feeling this is gonna be a cracker I've gone for 4-2 to Pompey we are really gonna be up for it but so are they and old Scummer Jones is a bit of a handful... Will Nugent start.. I wonder .. maybe he'll replace Benjani after 70 mins.. somebody always has to and old lazy bones ain't here this week.. Looking forward to seeing it on the box - Play up Pompey..
Chix
nugent on for benji after 70 mins sounds most likely. should be a great game though!
pompeycarpet
i didnt want to make any prediction fuelled by beer - but we have to win surely, we cannot lose after the past few days the script is written for a pompey win... 4-1 i reckon!
pompeyrug
Expect nothing else but a pompey victory, think with harry staying will just pump you up even more.
will it ever happen
