Pompey vs. Reading

Pint of Pompey royal

Back down South at last for a 'local' derby, well as local as we get now, the other team in Hampshire are doing quite well in the Conference right now, but the Premiership is a way off yet.

Vital Quotes:

The fun of the Carling cup is over for now, and whilst Reading lost an entertaining game against Liverpool, Pompey edged out Burnley with a Nugent 'hand of God' goal.

Pompey Team News:

Midfield looks the place to be right now, Davis, Muntari and Diop are the men in possesion, but Mendes did his chances no harm at Turf Moor. Taylor and Kranjcar will also be vying for a spot after a spell on the sidelines.

Distin and Campbell continue what is arguably the best central defensive partnership in the Premiership, with Pamarot having to be content with a spot on the bench.

Up front Benjani should start this one, but who with? Kanu has a couple of knocks and this could be the chance David Nugent has been waiting for.

Player to watch: Nugent

I really feel this is his moment, confidence plays a big part in any players game, but if Kanu fails to make it, it is time for the Nugget to show if he is golden, or plain old clod.

Reading Team News:

Bobby Convey is out after scoring a blinder against Liverpool, Little and Mate stay out along with Oster.
Kitson should be restored to the line-up alongside Lita.

Player to watch: Lita

Loosely linked with Pompey a little while back, Nugent's u21 partner has had a better baptism in the Premiership, and will prove a handful.

Match Facts & Stats

3-1 last year in probably Pompey's best performance at home all season, although we banged in 3, the scoreline actually flattered the Royals.

Ref Watch:

Mark Halsey (Lancs) Can't get away from the place can we!

Match Prediction:

Pompey should be favourites, Reading will play open football, and this could be the catalyst for counter-attack football from Utaka, stick your guesses here.

Next Fixtures:

Fulham at the Cottage

Looking forward to the journey from Liverpool, mini-bus departs 0600 for the journey, and i know we can win this one if we put a performance in. I hope Nugent gets his chance and takes it. No prediction but this must be a certain 3 points for us. See you all there

6-0 anyone? they way we have been playing, there is no reason why we CANT score 6 goals in one game, and it would be another example of us showing the league what we can do...not gonna happen though is it?

No chance carpet, daft to think you could score 6 past anyone in this division.

well up for this now, have not got to set out quite as early now as plymouth graham is driving, picking up my lot with some of his at 9, which isnt too bad... we could give reading a spanking, with it not surprising me but 4-0 is what i have my money on 0 nuge scoring a couple too...

THis game still promises to be closer than most would think. Even a 1-0 would do me. I am sticking my neck out though for a 3-1 in the Prediction League.

well, in the prediction league, i have gone for - shock horror - pompey to loose. not many people are even suggesting it, not even Reading fans - which is why ni think we could get complacent. OR, we will trash them...or something in between...

3-0 Pompey - A clean sheet and couple of Nuggets and a Benjani header to get the ball rolling - If we are as good as we think Reading att home should be a banker ...... and I think it will be - This game is our springboard to the rest of the season - We didn't expect to beat Blackburn but we should expect to beat Reading - No excuses blues work your preverbials off and deliver us the points in style..

all i can really say is that draw wi=ould be a dissaster! It would not provide any sort of motivation for the next game, if we play averagly, as a loss would, and it would not give usany points or confidence that a win would.

i agree with that carpet, and i went for Benji and Nugent not because i thought /hoped harry might be persuaded by their motivation having both been interviewed by Sky and clearly desperate to play. But then i see Harry is in the papers doing his best to depress Nugent again so i am not sure Nugeybaby !!! will get on the pitch

Lysi you are right and we must win games like this and the next three if we are to do it. Earlier i called my mate in media street and the current red top pundit rodent predictions ( his words not mine) i.e. the mails, express, mirror, sun, people etc etc all have us finishing in either 8th, 7th or 6th spot,. Now we want to win but i think we might grudgingly accept that 7th or 6th would be a fine season. But it needs to sart today

Hey carpet man, think you misunderstood me, what i meant was we wouldnt stop at 6, 7 was the minimum!!!LOL. Oh my god, i've never been to a game like that, i'm off out tonight so i'm gonna digest it and comment more tomorrow. Anyway, words totally eaten!! Ruggers, what a great game for you to travel and watch. Owens, the trip home will go quick tonight!

looks like none of you were able to predict the number of goals Pompey would score. Can't believe it i'm suffering with FLU and decided not to go to the game as it was more important to go to work tonight, grr i'm so flipping mad, at least it's the main game on sky tonight. Didn't i tell you Benjani will score a lot of goals this season.

it was always gonna happen after yu said that wasnt it ;-) and what a game to go and see - the record number if goals in 1 premier league game, and a massive pompey win. cant get better than that can you? Pompey 5th, and after the hard start, theres only one direction we are heading now, and is definatly not down. (or sideways)

I'm still laughing. I don't know whether this is a more-than-decent result or a dismal performance at home. 4 goals conceded?

The strange thing is that Owenspompey you travelled to the game asked me about the record Pompey win which was posted today. Who would have guessed we would almost equal it!! Never seen Pompey score 7 before in almost 50 years. Without checking i think last time was 7-0 win over Everton in the 50s.

It seems a lot of the regulars Owens Plymouth and of course Rug came a long way for the game and boy I bet they are glad they did. Expect Rug to go on and on and on about it when he (if) gets home.

i beleive you are right eastney dave, and the last time reading conceeded 7 was when they lost 7-5. but, we now have a premiership record, that i'm sure we will keep fro quite ome time. AND, it could have been more. That said, it was a sismal display at the back, and the game was no better than a pub football match...but still...excelelent to...show everyone we mean buisnes.

Who cares about time on the road on days like this, we were elated to liste to all the comments on the radio about how we are becoming a decent Premiership team, its just a pity it was full of winging and wining Chelsea fans, how bloody boring they are. we are on a roll and need to push on to the top of the table, pity about the back 4 though.

another thing that *****ed me off was that when pompey fans did mention what we could do the presenters were quick to point out 'yes, but you conceded 4 goals at home' - big deal, we scored 7... if we concede 4 goals again this season home or away i will be surprised, if we concede 4 goals at the fortress again between now and 2011 when we hopefully move i'll be surprise... but my point is unless you were actually at the game - or watched a full re-run you cannot apprecite that 4 goals were conceded but it didnt really matter and in a game like we saw this was going to happen...
