Burnley vs. Pompey

Turf Moor

25/9/07

19:45 pm

Burnley v Pompey

Claret and blue face Pompey on Tuesday, not West Ham, not Villa but the other lot from Lancashire.

Vital Quotes:

Pompey have played Burnley considerably more often than either West Ham or Villa in recent years, they have a history similar to our own, a set of rivals similarly loved like our own, but while Pompey finally awoke after nearly 50 years of slumber, Burnley are still awaiting that touch-light to step back up.

Burnley Team News:

Steve Cotterill will be hoping to keep Burnley's great start to the season rolling on, Scunthorpe were the last team to turn them over, and I'm sure David Unsworth will have a point to prove too.

Cotterill is highly thought of by Harry Redknapp, he tried to make him his number 2 when he first took the reigns at Fratton, but he wanted to remain his own man.

Player to watch: Andy Gray

Not the shagging Sky pundit, but the one with 5 in 7 so far, he knows where the goal is so far, so underestimate him at your peril.

Pompey Team News:

Ashdown will make another appearance in goal, and Pamarot and maybe even Linvoy will get an outing. Redknapp has confessed to a bit of squad rotation in this one, but with players like Taylor, Mendes, Nugent and Hughes to step in, we should be strong enough still.

Player to watch: Mendes

Been ousted from the first team squad of late, and will have more to prove than most, his form was not as high as he would of liked so far, but is a class act.

Match Facts & Stats

I think we hammered Burnley on our last outing at Turf moor, this was during the run in to our charge to the Championship title, 5-0 I think, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Match Prediction:

Tough close game I reckon, but as Leeds found in their only defeat of the season, Pompey should prove just too strong.

Next Fixtures:

Reading at Fratton

'ere, 'ere Paul. Doesn't need to be pretty just do it!! Burnley have made a good start Cotterill a good manager, almost came here. Hope Linvoy gets through the game too.

Paul we beat Burnley 3-0 in championship season.

We've had our big win in Lancashire, this is cup bonus time. Reading at home is our next big game. Burnley hate Blackburn like we hate scum, so we should get a thank you from the Burnley fans, well until the game starts.

I hope we go for it, we need a good cup run in this, by farthe easiest way of winning sum silverware

well HR has made it clear in the press today that he intends to play Perdro, Taylor, Nugent & Primus etc, they should have sufficient quality to get past this MASSIVE game ( one of my directors is a paying for me to go and he is a burnley fan, if being a northern wippet / pigeon monger wasn't enough). 2-0 Pompey but not the easiest game we will have i feel

Paul i don't think it was 5-0 mate i seem to remember 2 maybe 3 but not 5

yep, i dont care how we win, i just want us to win as the cups - particularly this one! - give us a great chance of winning something. we will win 3-1 i reckon...

Anything other than a solid convincing win 2/3-0/1 could knock our confidence.. but we should breeze it... ........ This Mr Nugent is your time to shine .... bag a couple and with the opposition we have in the next three league games we could all start to see you become the premiership scorer we've all been waiting for - Go get 'em Davy boy !!

We certainly like the Lancashire lads at the moment (Bolton Win, Blackburn Win, Man Utd Draw, Liverpool Draw) and now perhaps Burnley's scalp. Can't wait to chew over the Toffees.

im desperate to see nuge score a couple tonight and then hope that he will get a run in the team, we all know kanu wont be left out of many games - so altho i never want benji left out why not give nuge a go up top with kanu against reading?
pompeyrug
i like it pompeygray, very smooth :)

I am thinking of a total change for the team tonight Ashdown, Traore, Pamarot, Primus, Cranie, Taylor, Mendes, Mvuemba, Lauren, Nugent and Benji. With James, Diop, Krunchie, Distin, and Songo'o on the bench. If Nugent and Benji can both get one I will be a very happy man tonight. Another clean sheet at the back with the second defence would also be very pleasing.

Pompey win no doubt! Won't be an easy game though.

Andy Gray to score 2 own goals. And two for Burnley I guess.

playoers with something to prove - trying to force there way inot the squd: could go well. Playors without much game experiance this season, playing against an oposition we will likely underestimate: could go badly. Mentaly, we need to be on top of things, an early goal, keeping the ball, and we will cruise. Mistakes creeping in, and, nomatter the oposition, we could b punished (e.g. derby)

Go on the Nuge, another one in the bag

away wins are like twins: you wait 9 months, then 2 come at once! Or, theyb are like buses...either way, we are thtough, and hoping to have a nice...easy...draw in the next round.
pompeycarpet
i'll take that....sounds like they gave us a good game. Next round, Bring it on!!!:-)
pentonpompey
See previous comment..... I was so confident earlier, that was close though!

burnley are a good side arent they - particularly at turf moor. im happy to come through, as we did enough... it was a good run out for alot of players that have not played much this season, with many of them not going to play too much apart from in the cup - well not starting too many matches anyway...
pompeyrug
Hey... an away win, a clean sheet, Nugent scores the winner ... I for one am happy .... Who's next ?
