Blackburn vs. Pompey

Ewood Park

23/9/07

15:00

Blackburn v Pompey

The big four have left the building, now its another European team to contend with.

Vital Quotes:

2 points gained from our epic run, not a lot, but only Arsenal tore us apart, the rest of the season is supposed to be easier, but Rovers?

Blackburn are under-estimated at best, ignored at your peril. Mark Hughes has assembled a UEFA cup qualifying team, Benni McCarthy was among the top scorers, and beside thursdays shock defeat, they have not suffered a loss this season.

Pompey meanwhile have a solitary win to our name, we are not the best travellers as so many pundits like to remind us, and we don't traditionally fare that well at Ewood, last season going down as one of the poorest performances of the season.

Blackburn Team News:

Blackburn appear to have lost influential captain Ryan Nelsen with a tweaked baconstring, but Samba should be clear to return after concussion.
McCarthy will start, with either Derbyshire or Roberts as company up-front.

Player to watch: McCarthy

Big mates with Benjani, but a little more prolific, stopping the South African will be half the battle

Pompey Team News:

Almost a clean bill of health for Pompey, Lauren is a doubt with illness, but everyone else is vying for a place.
It's a question of what formation we decide on that will form the team, I feel Redknapp will go similar to the Liverpool game, but am willing to stand corrected if proven wrong(hopefully!)

Player to watch: Utaka

I would hope he will fill the right-side slot again, particularly after looking like he was in the Solent on the left, after such a dramatic entrance to the Premiership, it seems churlish to play him out of position now.

Match Facts & Stats

3 bloody nil last year. We were crap from the last ball to the end, and if I recall James even stopped a pen.

Match Prediction:

Draw anyone? A much needed win, or else revert to type and come home with nothing, place your bets here.

Come on Pompey, babies have been conceived and born since we last won away!
paultsmouth
one way of putting it paultsouth! Realsiticly, this weill be a very nhard game, but we need a point - minmum. The playors all seem to think we can get a point...so my prediction is 2-1 blackburn - and thats optimistic. we need to get our season going, but i dont see it happening on sunday.
pompeycarpet
I'll take a point now.
storagematt
well my nephew was basically conceived and born in that time - so a cracking way of putting it mate :) yep give me a point and i will take it now no questions asked, bit with nelsen out if we can somehow learn how to play away from the fortress maybe, just maybe...
pompeyrug
If things go against us this week-end we will be in the drop zone, despite some decent performances so far. It is a Cup Final for Pompey, the right result we see us charge up the table with winnable games to follow. A defeat will bring out the jangling nerves as each game becomes a scrap.
pompeygray
chicken Nugget to break his duck in other words pompey win 1-0 david Nugent...comes on near the end as a late sub..the few rovers fans next to the drummers muster an anti preston song by singing to DN "wot-o-waste-o- MoN eeee" ( i used to live in Bolton so i have a smattering of the language and i have to admit i enjoy Gravy on my chips) but a corner form matty tayr comes over gets a slight deflection off a rovers defender only to fall to DN. What do i do he thinks...******** hit it as hard as you can dont look up just hit it says davis that wot i do ..PUNT ..GOAL..."I knew he was a good striker say harry in post match interview@
plymouth graham
:) you have it all worked out dont you graham - i will settle for it if it works out like that...
pompeyrug
... only thing i didnt like mate was the gravy bit, i dont like gravy full stop, let alone on my chips!
pompeyrug
just had a phone call asking if i wanted to go to the game - which was tempting as my mood and feeling about what we can get out of this game is improving... so tempted as i was, with prices really good i had to say no - no doubt i will regret this!
pompeyrug
I hope you regret it rug...:-)
pompeycarpet
Rug, you should have come to Blackburn, it always makes me realise how lucky i am not to live there, and i fell thet about Burnley as well, mind you i hate this football on Sundays, it was meant to be played on a saturday at 3 o'clock, tradition where has it gone ?
Owenspompey
last time I went to Blackburn, Anderton scored! 1-1 I think with Moran equalising, I think Anderton scored direct from a corner, EastneyDave will know!
paultsmouth
I think we have 1 win to our credit in the Premiership at Ewood Park in our first season I think, so perhaps we can repeat that tonight. I did stress perhaps. I really can't imagine looking at the table and finding us 18th tomorrow. That will be depressing and will cause anxiety come the following game. This match, from a physcological point of view, is enormous. I keep seeing a 1-0 loss but I can't bare the thought so I must be bold with my tipping. how about a 4-1 win !!!
pompeygray
the game was moved to sunday cos of blackburn's uefa comitments, the other thing about Blackburn, they have a river that is the colour of mushy peas, chips AND greyveeeey. cant help but think pompeycarpets prediction is right so i will put my money on a 1-0 win for pomey.... what a shamefull waste by me, no doubt this will be the game Benni gets his scoring boots on,
russellm
Easter weekend if I recall PompeyGray, Yak scored I think, 2-1?
paultsmouth
boloxs i just voted bottom half of the table when i meant to vote 8th, owzabouta baycun buutty our lad, ow mooch for a pint and a pucket o crisps pleeayse ( practicing northernish)
russellm
Wey hey 4-4-2 at last!!!!! lets just hope we use i to good effect
pentonpompey
by the sound of things (reading the minute by minute thingy) we are play defensivly. No matty taylor, and kanu upfront...defend well, and nick a goal - it seems to be working, but i bet they come back and score in the seconf half...
pompeycarpet
GET IN THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pentonpompey
Get in!! Sean Davis sounded like Steven Gerrard today, move on up now!!
paultsmouth
thats the "hard one" out the way - time to climb the table, and get back to where we should be!!!
pompeycarpet
Blimey that sounded comfortable....ish today, well done boys
pentonpompey
yep, i should have bloddy gone shouldnt i... ah well ***** happens doesnt itm the win is the main thing and what a win against as quality side, who we made look ordinary... im not a massive davis fan i must admit, i do like the fella dont get me wrong, but he was fantastic today! roll on burnley then reading - and im off to this game with plymouth graham, his crew and my bro - possibly sister-in-law to be aswell...
