Pompey vs. Leeds

Fratton

28/8/08

19:45

Pompey v Leeds

But a few short years ago, this would be a Pompey full-house hoping to catch a glimpse of the upper tiers of British football, how times change!

Vital Quotes:

Pompey will probably ring the changes all round on this one, in fact Leeds will probably field a part youth team, such has the League cup slipped from status, but everyone harks on about a chance for silverware and Europe, but the managers take no notice.

And on another note, if you want to see Pompey fringe take on Leeds fringe tonight, get ready to fork out another 25 for the privilege.

Pompey Team News:

Your guess is as good as mine, expect Ashdown to have a glove warming match tonight, along with others like Songo'o, Cranie, Duffy, Traore and Hughes.

Nugent should start tonight, probably with Benjani, both will be looking to bang one in, Nuge to get off and running, and Benji to keep his confidence up.

Player to watch: Nugent

Playing a level he is familiar with, Nuge will be hoping to get that elusive first goal to kick off his season.

Leeds Team News:

Not the big names we remember from a couple of years back, although Tore Andre-Flo is leading the line, if he plays or not is another matter.

Player to watch: Prutton

The ex-Saints man will be out shove Pompey taunts down their throats, but again he may be saved for more pressing issues, like regaing positive points status in the league.

Match Facts & Stats

6-1 last time out at Fratton, both teams have lost most players since back then, although Linvoy and Gary O'Neil will have fond memories.

Match Prediction:

Pompey win? You would hope so, but all comes down to desire tonight.

Next Fixtures:

Back to the serious stuff of Liverpool and Arsenal

we should be able to keep a clean sheet tonight so i think 3-0, and i'm going to put money where my mouth is and put a tenner on Nugent to score
russellm
i know what you are saying about 'fringe players' but in all fairness, other than the likes of songo'o and duffy, who really are going to be fringe players this season, the vast majority of our squad are 1st teamers arent they - we dont honestly have many fringe players do we? leeds still have some good players so they will be here to win, so i think it will be a good game between two well fielded sides...
pompeyrug
yep, we should keep a clean sheet and should win - so my money will be on that. i think i will join you too russ and put some money on nuge to score, aswell as money on pompey to win the league cup outright!
pompeyrug
I was only just told I was tagging along to this game. Thank god for parents suprises.
Lysimachus
Do the world a favour and destroy Leeds.
Aamir
It would be nice to beat Leeds convincingly tonight, and for Benjy and David Nugent to get a couple each. Long journey ahead of us from Liverpool to Fratton, please lads make it worthwhile for us, we would settle for 4-0, touch wood !!
Owenspompey
it'll be far from a full house tonight with Pompey getting greedy with the ticket prices, but their constant money grabbing is becoming the norm these days. I'm with the rest of you Nugent to score but with my betting record i won't be putting any money on it as i don't want to mess it up for you guys.
Steve C
the prices are ridiculous, but in fairness it is not just pompey doing this to fans is it - it is all clubs doing it to all fans, some far worse than others. put money on it mate - if you beleive it have a flutter, it might be worth it...
pompeyrug
Rug, we could create a whole new thread on prices, and my wife would love to contribute to an article about the cost of football, she cant believe how much it costs me to get to the game, but lets not go there just yet.If we win it is money well spent!!
Owenspompey
My dad is paying some 25 each for us to see Pompey play Leeds in a distant cup round. If I were the half of the family who pays for us to go to games I would note that I could spend that 25 on around 5 or more videogames that would keep me busy for the next two months or so. But to go to a Pompey game instead, you can't get that experience anywhere else. It's money well spent, even if I acknowledge how easy it is to say that.
Lysimachus
An article in last nights evening news states that we are the only premiership team not to have reduced prices for the League Cup tonight, it will cost you around 10 more to watch Pompey tonight than many other premiership teams.
Steve C
when you put it that way Steve it is worse than i thought - i didnt realise pompey were the only club not to reduce tickets for the cup...
pompeyrug
Amir - I don't think Leeds need any more help in being destroyed. I have a lot of admiration for the Leeds players and sympathy for their fans. It really grated my sense of fairness when the FA docked them 15 points after their relegation and near bankruptcy last year, and they took it with courage and bounced back by winning their 1st 3 games. Unlike in Italy, where being sentenced to minus 15pts after a conviction for mafiosa activity can be cured by throwing money at officials, Leeds find themselves in a league where 98% of their fellow clubs wouldn't come to their aid in an hour of need. Anyway, good on them for making such a terrific start and recovery, and may we KICK THEM SENSELESS TONIGHT !
Toronto4Pompey
we need money to pay for bench warmers hence no change in prices! lol.

Personally, I remember Leeds from the late 60's and through the 70's - I hated them then and still do (and Bates even more). No sympathy, stuff them, boys.
Et_tu_Pompeii
25 for the reserves? No thanks, Pompey mucked me about with my season ticket and now want to rob me blind to watch Leeds youth team, I'll wait for the proper team thank you
paultsmouth
Me too Pompeii..but I daresay there are still some Leeds fans who remember Pompey's glory years not too fondly . It doesn't make either team one of the big boys of the current era. You never know when you're going to be in the dumpster in this league, since you're always one fickle millionaire away from it, and when you are there, nobody's going to give you the time of day unless you're one of the Gang of Four (in which case you'll get every ref's call and exmption from transfer rules a la Manyoo and Tevez).
Toronto4Pompey
Yep, too much money for this game, infact, i think the first games in each cup competition should be included as part of the season ticket. Another 80 game is not justifiable on top of the season et price!!
pompey4me
i put my money where my mouth was 100 on pompey to win my 2 or more goals .... @ 2.00 made a profit of 100 .... thankyou paramot!!!
