The wait is over, the pre-season complete, and now the time has come for Pompey's new charges to show how far they have come.
Pompey kick-off away from home for the first time in the Premiership, a novelty in its self.
A successful pre-season has passed and now the real mccoy presents its self in the form of last seasons play off winners.
Derby will be hoping to get off to a flier in their quest for survival, but Pompey also know the benefit of points on the board in the early games, especially with the early games we have been dealt this time.
Darren Moore and Andy Griffin should both line up against a couple of old mates, Giles Barnes is out for another month, and Robert Earnshaw gets another crack at the Premiership after spells with Norwich and West Brom.
'He's a right hard bastard Toddy, I'd have him in my team for sure' these were the words that Panorama tried to stitch up Harry Redknapp up for taking a bung, he will have to be up for a scrap alongside Bruno in trying to keep out Pompey's strike force.
Kranjcar is a definite absentee after sustaininf a foot injury, Linvoy is still recovering from close season surgery, and latest rumours report that Lua Lua maybe in Greece discussing a move to Olympiakos, at least this confirms suspicions that his brilliant pre-season form was a stunt to put himself in the shop window.
Its probably going to be Nugent and Benjani upfront, Lua if present should only make the bench, and Kanu has only just returned from the beach.
The nugget will be hoping for a running start against his old boss, if he can fir early, who knows how far he can go?
The last time we met was in the glorious promotion campaign of 2002/03
Pompey won 2-1 at pride park and thrashed the rams 6-2 at fratton in a game where a fan called Richey Cook got up and stormed out at half-time, after Kinkladze had just pulled a goal back screaming 'Pompey have done this to me once to often' little did he expect the second half carnage to follow, ha ha Richey we haven't forgotten!
