Rain, rain, go away! That's what the Pompey players will be singing on the long coach journey to Plainmoor today after the horrific rain caused the midweek clash against Wycombe to be the first abandoned game at Fratton Park since 1955. Torquay will look to avenge their JPT loss at the hands of Pompey at the first hurdle earlier this season, whilst the Blues will look to improve on a 4 match unbeaten run (excluding the Wycombe game). Pompey won on penalties after going through the whole 90 minutes, plus 30 minutes extra time with neither side finding the net, but Yassin Moutaouakil's cool chip down the middle won the clash.
This is Pompey favourite Patrick Agyemang speaking and to put into context, it's about him staying on his feet too often. He told The News he thinks he could get far more free-kicks etc. if he went down as easily as most players do, however, he simply can't stand not being the strongest player on the field. We've seen him do it time and time again this season- running with the ball 40 yards, shrugging off each and everyone one of the challenges on him. That's what has made him a key player this season, and earnt him the permanent contract in the summer. The 33-year-old is always chanted for when off the field, and always applauded on it, so either way, he makes an impact. I personally like him staying on his feet, as that's how it should be. Far too many players go down with the slightest touch and few players have the honesty to stay up anymore, and therefore I'd like Paddy to carry on the way he is- Especially considering the impact he has made so far this season.
Torquay have centre-back Krystian Pearce returning to the squad after suspension ruled him out of the midweek match at Burton. However fellow centre-half Aaron Downes remains sidelined as he recovers from a knee operation he had 3 weeks ago. New signings Damien Mozika and Paul McCallum may be involved after recently arriving at Torquay.
The midfielder has 4 goals to his name this season and is a key name on the team sheet.
Sonny Bradley is unavailable for the trip to Plainmoor following the 5th yellow card he picked up in midweek which sees him banned for one game. The ridiculous fact that cards count and goals don't in abandoned matches amazes me. Joe Devera looks set to come in at centre-back from left-back whilst Danny East could start again after coming back from a hamstring injury. Shaun Cooper is also in with a shout. David Connolly and Marcos Painter remain out with their calf injuries and Tom Craddock also remains sidelined with his knee problem.
It may seem I've just picked Big Pat because he's in the news, however, it's not the case. The Ghanaian has been influential all season long and is among Pompey's biggest threats. He only has four goals to his name which isn't representative of how he has played this season but he could grab a couple here against a struggling Torquay side. Agyemang's our target man, and Torquay will know what's coming. Whether they can handle him is a different story.
Apart from the JPT clash earlier this season, Pompey have never played Torquay. It's the first league clash and with Torquay only picking up 1 point from the last possible 15 and with Pompey unbeaten in 4, an away win looks in our favour.
A 2-0 away win is what I think is coming today. We're in good form and Torquay aren't and that's what I'm basing my prediction on. Pretty fair one if you ask me! Agyemang to get one, Racon to get the other.
Pompey return home, literally to the seaside! Exeter are the opponents and they sit in a comfortable 3rd. It'll be a tough opponent but I can see Pompey getting a good result!
