Fratton again as out-of-from Pompey entertain in and out playing Doncaster on the South Coast. Guy Whittingham has exclaimed that he knows what's wrong with the Blues and has made two new additions to the squad to fix the problems, and with the PST nearing the takeover, there seems to be light at the end of a very long and bleak tunnel.
'I don't fear Blues exodus' are the words of caretaker manager Guy Whittingham as he begins preparation for the January transfer window. It's a worry that with no players on meaningfully permanent contracts that a mass leaving could happen in less than six weeks time but Whittingham claims that no players have approached him saying they want to leave so he is hopeful he can retain the Blues top players. He has also been told that he is the man that will stay in charge, at least until Pompey exit administration no other than Trevor Birch himself.
Pompey's two new additions to the team in the forms of striker Paul Benson and winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing are set to make an immediate impact as they are predicted to be thrown straight into the squad. The work ethic and goal scoring instinct of Benson and the pace and skill of Mendez-Laing are the missing piece of the jigsaw in the eyes of Whittingham so hopefully they are part of a Pompey revival. In other squad news, Darrell Russell may make another appearance after he played 65 minutes in last weeks away defeat to Bury, his first start in 6 weeks. Scott Allan serves his last game of his 3 match suspension. Gabor Gyepes and Akos Buzsaky have hopefully fully recovered from their recent injuries plan to return to the first team.
Hoping to make a quick-fire difference to the team will be 33-year-old Benson. The on-loan Swindon Town man has a very good scoring record in the Football League and it will be a big favour he does Pompey if he adds to his 3 goal tally of this season.
Doncaster have struggled with the squad as of late due to numerous injuries however they have nearly returned to full strength following the returns of Shelton Martis, skipper Rob Jones to the squad. However they remain without Kyle Bennett and Jamie McCombe. Rovers were in a delightful patch of form recently as they had won 6 out of 7 recently but their last two games have ended in defeat, the most recent against Bournemouth.
Ex-Pompey winger Cotterill has been in good form for the Dons as of late with 5 goals and 4 assists so far this season. He recently told the papers that he couldn't wait to return to Fratton Park and praised the Blues for his involvement in the team. It will now seem he could become a bad enemy depending on his contribution to the clash this afternoon.
Pompey boast a much better record over the Dons with the stats showing Pompey have claimed victory in 10 of the 14 fixtures between the two. Doncaster have only tasted victory twice over Pompey and 2 matches have also been drawn. A 71% win record is nice to see and lets hope this goes up today.
3-2 Pompey this afternoon with a debut goal from Paul Benson is my call. Pompey are due a win and it would be nice to see a half-decent performance at Fratton again following some dismal ones recently.
Leyton Orient travel to Fortress Fratton in 3 days time for another league clash that could easily swing either way as Orient only have 1 more point to there name than the Blues proceeding into today's matches. WIN OR LOSE, UP THE BLUES!
