Leeds vs. Pompey

Elland road

1/10/11

Leeds v Pompey

Pompey will be looking to bounce from their encouraging albeit disappointing defeat to Peterborough on tuesday evening with a better result at Elland road.

Vital Quotes:

Leeds managed a 3-3 draw last week with high fliers Brighton, Leeds have averaged 2 goals a game so far this season, impressive in front of goal, but also lax defending it, letting in 15 to keep themselves mid table.

Pompey meanwhile have only just scored over a goal a game, 2 points seperate us but both teams will no doubt feel they should have a few more.

Steve Cotterill refused to blame anyone for the defeat on tuesday, to be fair Ashdown and Huselkepp both know individual errors cost us, Ashdown has genarally been sound in goal, Huselkepp was unlucky in the fact that he was doing his job in tracking back when he put through his own net, hardly just reward for putting a shift in!

Leeds Team News:

Defence is obviously the consern for Leeds as Grayson struggles to find the right combination at the back, goals are no problem though, Leeds are chasing a 4th straight home win and it is the home form that has kept them on the coat tails of the chasing pack.

Kisnorbo is most likely to return after seeing out his suspension, whiule an old face in Andy O'Brien awaits once more, he had a bit of a nightmare in last seasons 3-3 draw I recall!
McCormack and Keogh are the men in possesion in attack at the moment, while Becchio is waiting in the wings for another chance to score the goals.

Player to watch: McCormack

No brainer really, the Scot is full of goals with 9 already so far, 8 of which are in the league, Pompey need to stop him to have any chance.

Pompey Team News:

Varney serves the final game of his ban, Mokoena may return after injury, but I feel SC may well stick with the same 11 from tuesday, the formation seems to suit us better away from home where the onus is on the home side to attack, I honestly feel SC is looking to copy the side that Benjani was in first time round, back then Pompey used to hit quickly on the break and played counter-attack all day long, it worked wonderously 5 years ago, harder to replicate so far.

Player to watch: Benjani

Off and running now, he will be the fulcrum of any attack and need Huselkepp and Riise to support him when possible.

Match Facts & Stats

3-3 last term as Pompey staged a late fight back, there hasn't been a 0-0 betwqeen these two since 1960 in the old division 2, Pompey haven't actually been on the wrong side of a result since 1999, that was in the cup and last time in the league 21 years ago!

my missus' birthday today Pompey, don't let me down!

I think you might be right about the formation but we had players who were able to adapt and play what was in front of them, we also had a team that had some strong fast runners in it; Benji has lost a yard of pace and Erik isn't strong. The back four, back then, were reasonably solid and coordinated by a strong keeper. So we know the formation works but only if you have the right players which I'm not convinced Potty Cotty has. I'm going for a win in the prediction league but I don't really believe in it.

My own prediction I mean - oh - and happy birthday to Mrs Paultsmouth

Agree with a lot of that Russ, where Huss isn't particularly strong though he does have pace, as does Varney when he returns, its up to them to do the hard running, just need Ashdown to get more vocal again, he seemed to be last year but has gone quiet again

My stats counted McCormack on 8 league goals, he scored 2 against Brighton. Hopefully Pearce will crunch him early on today to knock his confidence.

That;s what I said Fripps, "cough"

I seem to remember us drawing 3-3 at home 21yrs ago but i think lee chapman scored cant be sure, think we lost 1 or 2 nil up there ! thats what i hate about football it reminds you how old you are lol

nobby, was that the game Whittingham slid through their keep? Happy days they were! Im going 1-1 today, I think we can get something.. RR centre back with TBH for me with GH and Pearce fullbacks... the rest of the team same as tuesday for me with Lawrence tucked inside.

on another note, JJ Shelvey went on loan to Blackpool this week - think we missed a trick there, good player..
pompeyweller
yes weller i did see that would have been good for us, we seem to be missing out on a few good loans this year for some reason..
