Pompey v Canaries

Pompey resume action at last after an enforced break caused by the weather, Norwich await and Pompey will be looking to build on their impressive win at Swansea.

Vital Quotes:

Norwich although nestled nicely on the East coast, is absolutely miles away, in fact a little stat I heard earlier points out that it is the same distance as Old Trafford!

Norwich have been a bit of yo-yo side in recent years, founder members of the Premier league, they also had a European run with the likes of Jeremy Goss and Efan Ekoku, since then it has been up and down, but never not entertaining.

I remember many an encounter over the years, one encounter that really sticks in my mind was from September 1997, in fact the referee is engrained in my memory to this day, it was the dark days of Terry Fenwick and Venables, Pompey were leading by a rare goal from Andy Turner, we were down to ten men and clinging on, the referee was called Barry Knight of Orpington, Kent (see, told you he scarred me for life), it was the days before a board was held up to indicate how long was left, Knight in all his wisdom played 12 minutes of injury time, seemingly adding on another minute until Norwich scored which they duely did. The ref then blamed the Pompey fans for all the bonus time as they never returned the ball quick enough when it went in the crowd!

Norwich Team News:

Norwich will be without captain and top scorer Grant Holt, he serves a one match ban for 5 bookings, Jackson looks likely to partner Coldplay's lead singer in his place.
Drury, Smith and Hughes all miss out through injury.

Player to watch: Martin

Making his 100th appearance and out to impress, hopefully it will go as well as Ricky Ponting's 150th test!

Pompey Team News:

Dickinson serves the last of his 3 match ban, Ward will deputise once more, Pompey though look likely to field an unchanged side once more, continuity seems to be Cotterill's watchword!

Player to watch: Nugent

Been bigged up by Rocha in the week, goals will enhance his stature once more.

Match Facts & Stats

It was 23 years ago Pompey last won in Norfolk, Barry Horne earning a rare win in our return to the top flight.

Ref Watch:

Miles Kane

Norwich are 4th in the league and considering they came up from the 1st Division only this year, they are steaming! They beat Derby away from home last week, so I fear they will be very much "up for it". That said, their Home record this season has not been good. Their Captain Grant Holt may not be playing tomorrow, but they have a Canadian International to take his place, who apparently is in form and has been scoring lately. Depending on how the team are feeling tomorrow (and lets face it, thats what it seems to boil down to lately), I think we will nick it 1-0. PUP! (And I hope they will be running the channels properly!) :-)

There defence has apparently improved no end with someone called Leon Barnett just having been signed permanently, who is partnering their Elliott Ward. These two have formed a rock solid partnership and are Norwich are not shipping the goals they were at the beginning of the season. We shall see..........

Pompey and Norwich have the 2nd and 3rd worst defenders respectively. My real concern is that Swansea apart -and they had had on an easy run, Pompey have not been able to cope with in form teams pressurising them. It needs Kitson to put a shift in, no stupid tackles, no whinnying at the Ref and Mok needs to be sensible in his positioning. In short Pompey need to play out of their skins.

So the defence wasn't as rock solid as they would have us believe. 2-0 to us!!!! PUP!

Second half Nugent and Halford just steamrolled their left-back, and that's where our 3 points came from. Most of the 11 today played outstandingly, however Utaka didn't exactly shine, so we need him to pick up his game in the next few weeks. Hopefully he doesn't feel he's on his way out and starts giving half-hearted performances.
